1.1 Background of the Study

Social media networking sites are the most widely used mode of communication. It enables

users to communicate, form relationships, engage with one another, and create, modify, and

share data. As a result, social media is a set of web-based and mobile services that bring people

together to participate in online communities, discuss, and trade ideas. Many students make use

of social media. This study examines if social media have an effect—either good or bad to the

academic performance of the Grade 11 Students in Voctech Senior High School. It reports the

findings of a thorough and comprehensible study from the conducted surveys as well as

investigations and pure research. To be able to distinguish what kind of effect does social media

have upon the academic performance of a student.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to determine, how the usage of Social Media affect the

academic performance of Grade 11 Students. This study seek to find the answers if there

Specifically, this study intended to answer the following questions.

1. What is the negative and positive effect of Social Media to Grade 11 Students of Voctech

Senior High?

2. What are the factors in Social Media divert their attention from focusing on their

modules?

3. What Social Media Sites they mostly used and how many hours a day they spent on

Social Media?

1.3 Scope and Limitations

This research aims to determine the impacts of social media on Grade 11 students' academic

performance. This option is only available to Voctech Senior High Grade 11 students. This study

tends to know the effects of social media in the academic performances of the students. This is

limited only for Grade 11 Students of Voctech Senior High School.

The challenge that the researchers encountered upon conducting this study is the difficulty on

interviewing the respondents, for the reason that is hard to for the researchers to easily leave their

homes because of the global pandemic.

1.4 Significance of the Study

This research is important to grade 11 students of Voctech because this will help them be

aware what are the effects of prolonged use of Social Media to their academic performance.

This research is significant to the following:

This study will benefit the grade 11 Senior High Students of Voctech because they are the

subjects of this research and will help them determine what are the positive and negative

effects of Social Media to their academic performance. This study will benefit the parents

for them to know how the Social Media affects their child’s academic performance and how

are they going to help them. This research will benefit the teachers for the purpose of having

knowledge about the reasons and effects of too much use of Social Media to their student’s

academic performance. This research will benefit the future researcher for them to have

references as related studies to their future studies. The results of the study may help the

students how the Social Media affects their studies and acknowledge the problems for

improvement. The use of our research is to make the society be aware of the effects of social

media to their studies and how are they going to improve their academic performance.

1.5 Definition of Terms


For better understanding of this study, the following terms are defined in the context of

this research.

Social Media. Refers to the interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or

exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Social media is not

“media,” but platforms for interaction and networking.

2.2 Participants of the Study.

The participants of the study are the Senior High School Grade 11 students selected randomly of
Voctech Senior High School.

2.3 Locale of the Study.

The study was conducted in Voctech Senior High School located at 2 nd floor Bai Center, Cebu
South Road, Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City.

2.4 Sampling Technique.

The one on one interview will make use of stratified random sampling technique to determine a
reliable representation of the student samples in grade 11 Babbage.

In order to ensure reliability of respondents selection and avoid bias, the researchers will also employ
proportionate sampling and simple random sampling with random start through a lottery method.

2.5 Data Gathering Procedure.

The researchers utilized one on one interviews in conducting the study to the Grade 11 Senior High
School students in Voctech Senior High regarding “The effects of Social Media to the academic
performance of Grade 11 students in Voctech Senior High School.

2.6 Ethical Considerations

Ethical Considerations can be specified as one of the most important parts of the research.
Dissertations may even be doomed to failure if this part is missing.

1. Research participants should not be subjected to harm in any ways whatsoever.


2. Respect for the dignity of research participants should be prioritized.
3. Full consent should be obtained from the participants prior to the study.
4. The protection of the privacy of research participants has to be ensured.
5. Adequate level of confidentiality of the research data should be ensured.
6. Anonymity of individuals and organizations participating in the research has to be ensured.
7. Any deception or exaggeration about the aims and objectives of the research must be avoided.
8. Affiliations in any forms, sources of funding, as well as any possible conflicts of interests have to
be declared.
9. Any type of communication in relation to the research should be done with honesty and
transparency.
10. Any type of misleading information, as well as representation of primary data findings in a
biased way must be avoided.
