Discipline and Ideas in Social Sciences (DISS)

In previous semester, we discussed about Discipline and Ideas in Social Sciences whereas

we discuss the branches and its subfields. In Social Science it is more on to the discovering of

facts about humans and other social animals. I have learned that Social Science studies the

historical, cultural, sociological, psychological, and the political forces that shape the actions of

individuals and their impact on society. The different disciplines that we have discussed under

social sciences all help in providing a better understanding and appreciation of the complex

issues that face society. These disciplines are Anthropology, the study of ancient societies and

their cultural tradition. Demography, the study of human population. Economics, the study of

the efficient allocation of scarce resources in order to satisfy unlimited human needs and wants.

Geography, the study of interaction between the natural environment and the people living int.

Linguistics, the scientific study of language History, the study of the recorded past. Political

Science, the study of power, politics and government. Psychology, the scientific study of

behaviour and mental processes. Sociology, the scientific study of the society as a whole. We

also discussed about the different approaches of Social Science whereas it provides an

introduction to the dominant approaches and ideas in the social sciences. It identifies the key

ideas and assumptions as well as the key theoretical and methodological issue associated with

each approach. These approaches are Rational Choice Theory, Symbolic Interactionism,

Structural-functionalism, Institutionalism, Human Environment System Approach,

Psychoanalysis, Hermeneutic-phenomenology, Marxism and Feminist Theory.

In conclusion, the main reason why it is important to study the social sciences is because

the knowledge of the social sciences can help us improve our societies. By studying social

science, we are becoming better informed about how societies should be put together. Studying

social sciences can provide us with so many important answers and observations that may help

improve the understanding of our lives, and thus help us to improve our interactions with each

other.
Discipline and Ideas in Applied Social Sciences (DIASS)

In previous semester, we discussed about Discipline and Ideas in Social Sciences whereas

we discuss the branches and its subfields. Social science is a discipline or branch of science that

deals with human behaviour in its social and cultural aspects. Applied Social Sciences is a

branch of study that applies the different concepts, theoretical models, and theories of the social

science disciplines to help understand society and the different problems and issues. Applied

science is a discipline that used to apply existing scientific knowledge based on scientific

researches and also to developing a practical application of science such as technology,

methodology, inventions.

Applied Social Science it is more on to solving problems in the real world. It usually

produces practical steps, practical decisions, as tools to answer the existing problem. It helps

stakeholders to develop the systems to be better. Counseling is one of the fields of applied social

science that provides guidance, help, and support to individuals who have problems. In our

practicum as a counselor, it needs practical steps and practical decisions where we as the

counselor, we need to be patient and be good listener for the client to trust us. In Applied Social

Science, it explores the theory, the discovery, the findings of experimentalists in any of the social

science fields that can be used in the real world.

In conclusion, the importance of studying Applied Social Science it involves the study of

the society we live in, and the relationships people have within that society. And through Applied

Social Science, we can provide alternative solutions to the diverse problem of the society.
Community Engagement Solidarity and Citizenship (CESC)

Community Engagement Solidarity and Citizenship focuses on the application of ideas

and methods of the social sciences to understand, investigate, and examine challenges of

contemporary community life. It focuses on community-action initiatives such as community

engagement, solidarity, and citizenship as guided by the core values of human rights, social

justice, empowerment and advocacy, gender equality, and participatory development.

CESC as a subject has thought me many things. These includes the importance of

understanding community dynamics and community action, the definitions of community,

elements, typologies, overview of community engagement, purpose of community and the

selected cases of community action initiatives. I have learned the difference between community

dynamics and community action where community dynamics is the planning where we should

think creatively and act strategically, while community action is the implementing of the said

plan.

As a student, studying CESC has a huge impact to me because it will help me improve

my skills. Especially in our upcoming outreach program where we are going to meet new people.

It will help me improve my communication skills and decision making skills. It will also help me

deal with different types of issues in our community. CESC also though me that in order for you

to become a successful you need to become first a responsible person because if you can’t be

responsible enough, how can you influence your follower? How can you become a role model?

Being a responsible person is a huge task because you are going to develop a vision that will

motivate others to move with passion toward a common goal.

In conclusion, studying CESC is important as it takes action to influence stakeholders

with government, political or funding power to implement public projects and policies that

primarily benefit individual communities and drive social change.

Philippine Politics and Governance

Philippine Politics and Governance introduces the basic concepts and vital elements of

politics and governance from a historical-institutional perspective. In particular, it attempts to

explain how the important features of our country’s political structures/institutions, processes,

and relationships developed across time.

In our previous lessons in Grade 11, Philippine Politics and Governance as a subject

thought me many things. It includes both understanding and explaining the world of politics that

is all around us. We all participate in politics, though most of the time we do so unknowingly.

Politics is much more than simply voting in an election or working in government. Reading or

listening to news, making donations to aid groups, or talking with friends and family about social

issues and values are a few of the many examples of political activity in our everyday lives. In

our discussion I have also learned about how the law was made, what are the steps that are being

done.

As a student, studying PPG has a huge impact to me because through it I can understand

and learn more what is my stand, what is my right as a person. It is very important to care about

politics because you should know what is going on around you. Also, it is important to have a

say in what is going on around you. The political decisions people make will affect many lives.

Many people see politics as the government and the laws being made, and that is true, but it is

way more complicated than that. Every law that is made will impact many. Sometimes the

decisions will affect people in a bad way. Every vote that you make will either break people or

make people.

In conclusion, the importance of studying Philippine Politics and Governance is for us to

understand how political system works, to understand the functions and role of the government,

to develop political awareness, to understand socio-political issues and their implications and to

cultivate responsiveness citizenship and effective participation in government.

Introduction to World Religions and Belief System (IWRB)

Religion is one of the primary disciplines for investigating the boundary questions of life

and death, of love and hate, that characterize the human condition. All persons crave for self-

transcendence in one mode or another. Religious Studies provides the opportunity to understand,

with depth and nuance, the many beliefs and rituals that move persons to appreciate the

alternative world of the religious reality.

In the previous semester, we discussed about the different religions in the world. These

are Judaism, Christianity, Islam which is the Abrahamic’s faith that founded by Abraham.

Hinduism, Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism which is the Religions of the South Asia

that founded by Siddharta Gautama Buddha. Confucianism, Doaism, Shintoism which is the

Eastern Traditions that founded by Confucius.

WRB as a subject has thought me many things. Especially in terms of worshipping and

having faith with God. Because I was once far from God, but because of our teacher wanting us

to go to church every Sunday, it made me realized that going to church and reading bible is the

best decision that I have done in my life, because it made my life change where my faith with

God becomes strong. I have also learned the different Religions in the world where every

religion has its belief system. One of the religion that interests me is Isam, because as we all

know when some people hear the word Muslim some people are scared because they think that

all Muslim are terrorist, but NOT. It is just because of the Global Terrorism where it has a huge

impact in Islam as a religion because global terrorism changed the perspectives of some people

or non-Islamic religions to fear the Muslims. The other reason also is that some non-Islamic

religions does not know the difference between the Jihad and Global Terrorism.

In conclusion, the importance of studying religion is that can give us knowledge about

the different belief systems of every religion. Studying religion gives you the opportunity to

explore some of the deepest and most significant ideas and values that have emerged in human

history.
Creative Non-fiction

Creative nonfiction is a genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create

factually accurate narratives.

In previous semester, we have discussed many things about creative nonfiction. At first, I

thought that this subject would be hard for me because I am a person that is really not into

writing. But when time passes by I found creative nonfiction an amazing subject because it

thought me many things. In some ways, creative non-fiction is like jazz, it’s a rich mix of flavors,

ideas, and techniques, some of which are newly invented and others as old as writing itself.

“Creative” doesn’t mean inventing what didn’t happen, reporting and describing what wasn’t

there. It doesn’t mean that the writer has a license to lie. But it means that you have to be creative

in writing something.

Studying creative nonfiction made me realize that even when you are writing you can still

express your feeling and your emotions. Creative nonfiction helped me improve my skills in

writing. Specially that I am a journalist, it gave me ideas and techniques in writing some articles.

Studying creative nonfiction is a very interesting subject, for someone who loves using

imagery and creative literary tools in writing. Studying this subject, I've encountered issues

between how realistic the writing sounds. Creative Nonfiction can fall into a gray area for many

writers as they want to tell their true story realistically and honestly, to a point where there isn't

much room for creative freedom. I feel the balance can be made, and introducing more creativity

and freedom to nonfiction can add a new layer to honest and truthful story telling.
Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century

Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking in the 21 st Century provides area of knowledge

where deep understanding is required, it helps us discover and differentiate relationship between

causes and consequences.

When I first heard about Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking as our subject for the

semester, I clearly had not that much of an idea on what it is all about. But when our teacher

discussed the topics of our subject it became interesting. I have learned that Trends are not

always distinct from each other, as there’s often a little bit of principle inside of a fad. Something

about gigatrends. megatrends etc. I have realized that TNCT was an interesting subject because it

made me gain knowledge and learn about things that I did not know about before or things that I

did not realize back then when I did not know this subject yet. It has somewhat helped me to be

open minded and to think deeply on topics or issues regarding the government, people etc. It has

taught me to be critical on matters that I think is shallow back then.

Basically, the subject Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking is such a great and

interesting subject for me. In this subject, we created some outputs that helped me understand

more about this subject. The topics discussed like global networks, globalization, international

labor migration, and trends has somewhat helped me deeply understand the happenings and

issues related to the subject matter. Especially the topic about international labor migration,

where I can relate because my parents are OFW’s, I had been very interested on this topic during

the lecture. It had made me realize their importance and it helped me gain wider knowledge

about migration, workers and the reasons why one goes abroad.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing is a subjective creation of a picture of the world. It is an

expression of the realization of the joys and sorrows, as well as a way to let one's imagination

run wild. Creativity is multidimensional. It can be a trait, skill, ability, or an approach, or all of

these.

In our previous lesson, as a whole, I am very bittersweet about the class. I can say I did

learn a lot, and I got to exercise my creativity in another way, so I am glad to learn that I did it

correctly. There are some things, that I would have rather not done, simply because they didn’t

capture my interest as much as me being able to write my own stories did.

In fact I enjoyed that most. When we had to write our own stories it was interesting to

me. Because the entire creative writing process isn’t as easy as it sounds. You can’t just sit down

and boom, write a story. It isn’t as easy to express yourself in writing as one might think it is. I

had to learn the hard way that ideas in your head don’t sound as good on paper as they do in your

head. I just added some things for excitement. And if it’s one thing I really learned from this, is

that a writer must keep his or her readers entertained.

Studying Creative writing at an academic level is more than just an asset: it is a

flourishing discipline, helping students with their personal writing as well as academic writing,

and has also proven to be very effective in language learning, which still has a long way to go

and much more to offer.

In conclusion, Creative writing is not only a means to help us students unleash our

creative side and feel more comfortable when writing in and about everyday life, but has also

been proven to improve our language learning and writing skills..
