ENGLISH 11 – UNIT 15: Cities

I. Lead-in & introducing:


- Show the first picture
T: what is he doing?

- Show the second picture
T: Look at this picture and fill in the blank

- Introduce the two sounds: “So today we’re
going to learn two sounds /θ/ and /ð/
II. Presenting:
- Say the first sound clearly in isolation: /θ/
- Say it in one word: think; earth
- Students repeat the sound, in chorus and individually.
- Describe how the sound is pronounced: Place the tip of your tongue slightly between the
top and bottom teeth. The tongue tip comes out just a little bit, then blow the air every gently.
- Say the second sound clearly in isolation: /ð/
- Say it in one word: they; mother
- Students repeat the sound, in chorus and individually.
- Describe how the sound is pronounced: the mouth position for the two sounds is exactly the
same. Place the tip of your tongue slightly between the top and bottom teeth, blow the air
gently, use your voice when pronouncing.

III. Practicing:
A. Aural drill
- Same/Different Drill: Listen to two words. Say same if they have the same sound; say
different if they have different sounds.

T: loath/ loathe Ss: different
T: thigh/ thy Ss: different

- Pronunciation Journey: Look at the map


on the screen. If you hear /θ/, turn left, and
turn right if you hear /ð/. If you reach the
correct destination, you differentiate the
sounds correctly
