( The portion of the curve above x axis give definite integral value positive
and below x axis give definite integral value negative )

Answer

• Find the area of the portion below x-axis. To Find This,

3
– Find the points of intersections A and B of the curve with

x-axis.

– Then give the input command Integral(f, x(A), x(B))

Answer

6.93 sq units

• Find the area of the portion above x-axis.

Answer

6.93 sq units

• What is the total area of the portion ?

Answer

13.86 sq units

4
Alternate Method

• Edit the function as f (x) = x3 − 3

• Set a = −3 and b = 3

• Find the area using the input command Integral(f, a, b)

Answer

13.86 sq units

• Evaluate the area of the following regions:

• If the area bounded by the curve y = 3x and the line x = 12

is divided in the ratio 1 : 7 by the line x = a , then find the

value of a .

Answer

Total area =48 sq. units

a=3

Activity 31.3- Combination of Curves

• Find the area of the region bounded by the curve x2 + y 2 = 32 ,

the line y = x , and x-axis in the first quadrant.

– Draw x2 + y 2 = 32 and y = x.

– Identify the enclosed region.

– Mark the point of intersection of the line with the circle as A

and the intersection of circle and x-axis as B

– Find the area under the line y = x

[Input Command, a = Integral (x, 0, x(A)) ]

– Find the area under the circle x2 + y 2 = 32

 √
Input Command, b = Integral 32 − x2 , x(A) , x(B)

Answer

The area under the line y = x is 8 sq. units

.
The area under the circle x2 + y 2 = 32 is 4.57 sq. units

Required area 8 + 4.57 = 12.57 sq. units
