Drainage Channel Design

Lecture note Prepared By: Pohanmal. Mohammad Noor Shaida

Year : 1399/2020
Steps should be taken to implement the proper
drainage system
(a) The watershed area is to be demarcated and the total area
should be ascertained from the contour map.
(b) The water logged area is to be demarcated and the area
should be calculated from the contour map.
(c) The volume of water collected in the water logged area is
calculated by studying the contour map.
(d) If the rainfall records are available, the run-off may be
calculated directly.
(e) If rainfall records are not available, the intensity of rainfall is
calculated.
Value of impermeability factor (P)
Determination of run-off coefficient (K)
Example of run-off coefficient (K)
Determination of rainfall intensity (i)
Estimation of run-off by rational method

Section II
Rainfall Intensity
• The rainfall intensity in millimeters/hour is generally
determined from Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves, if
available.
• If rainfall data for a 10-year storm event is not available within
a particular project site area, a value of 50mm/hr shall be used
in calculating design flows.
Rainfall Intensity

• In regions where no I-D-F curve is available, the rainfall intensity may be calculated
by the following formula:

i = (R/24)*(24/Tc) K
I=rainfall intensity (mm/hr)
R=maximum daily rainfall for design frequency (mm)
Tc=time of concentration (hr)
K = a regional coefficient whose approximate value is 0.722 for
Afghanistan for 10-year storm
Time of Concentration

• This is the longest time it takes for a part of the catchment to

contribute water to the outlet.

• It is the time it takes for all the parts of the watershed to be

contributing water to the outlet.

• The divide or watershed divides the flow of water along different

slopes.

• All runoffs flow from the whole catchment to the stream or outlet.
Time of Concentration

• useful formula:

Tc = 0.225 L 0.42 S – 0.19 k – 1

Tc is the overland flow time(min);

L is the maximum length of flow (ft);
S is the watershed gradient (ft/ft).
