Overview
This manual explains how to install, configure, and operate the ARRIS
HEMi Head End Micro unit. It includes the following chapters and appen-
dixes:
Appendix E: GNU General Public License describes the terms for using
and sharing public domain software.
This manual is intended for technicians who install and configure HEMi
units. Technicians should have previous experience in performing similar
tasks for headend and network equipment.

On/Off Switch
NOTE
HEMi is shipped with two front-panel configurations. One configuration
has controls on the right side of the enclosure. The other configuration
has the controls on the left side of the enclosure. Both configurations are
functionally identical.
NOTE
HEMi is shipped with two rear-panel configurations. The two
configurations are functionally identical, and their RF and media cabling
arrangements are the same.
Figure 1-2 and Figure 1-3 show the layout for both rear-panel configura-
tions. There are minor differences in the location of the AC mains sockets
and grounding lug nuts. The rear power switch has been removed in the
configuration shown in Figure 1-2, but an On/Off switch is available on the
front panel.

HEMi converts local analog channels to the MPEG-2 digital standard. This
capability allows you to meet existing multi-dwelling unit (MDU) contrac-
tual requirements while supporting the rollout of digital services. The unit
is ideal for applications involving front-gate cameras, parking garage
cameras, special events, text generators, and community news channels.
HEMi enables you to receive one 6 Mhz network channel and selectively
drop network programs (see Figure 1-4 for details). You can also add up
to eight locally encoded audio/video programs into the 6 Mhz RF channel
output by the HEMi unit. You need a channel deletion (notch) filter if the
incoming 6 Mhz channel contains existing programs. (The notch filter is not
part of the HEMi unit package.)

HEMi Controls
You can configure HEMi using the unit’s browser-based control panel or its
front-panel keypad and LCD.
The Control Panel The browser-based control panel is the interface to the unit’s configuration
software. The control panel consists of multiple pages. Each page consists
of four cells, as shown in Figure 1-5.

The navigation bar occupies the left side of the page. It includes all the
top-level navigation links. Add/Drop, RF, and IP Output are optional
features.
NOTE
The Add/Drop, RF, and IP Output links and associated pages only display
if these features are installed. (See Uploading a KDF File, page 4-14, and
Entering a Feature Key Passcode, page 4-28, for details.)
NOTE
Clicking Restart does not open a new page. Instead, it opens a small
dialog window that asks you to confirm or cancel the restart action.
The header cell displays the page name and tabs. Tabs allow you to navi-
gate to additional pages. Figure 1-5 shows four tabs in the header cell:
Network, SNMP, Security, and Time. Bold indicates the current page.
LCD Control You can access and configure many control panel parameters using the
unit’s keypad and LCD (Figure 1-6). The LCD provides a convenient way
to access parameters you normally need to set or modify while in the field.
Note that the LCD goes into “sleep mode” if the front panel controls are
not accessed for several minutes. To wake up the display, press one of the
keypad buttons.
On/Off Switch
ation but flashes every 1.5 seconds if the Blink Front Panel parameter
on the Diagnostic page is enabled. This parameter provides a visual
queue for locating a specific unit in a multi-unit installation.
• LED Status Indicators: The unit includes two status LEDs in the
center of the front panel. The top LED turns blue when power is
applied to the HEMi unit. The second LED flashes red when informa-
tion is being written to the on-board flash memory (for example, when
saving a configuration file).
• On/Off Switch: To turn the unit on, hold the switch in the on posi-
tion for one second. To turn the unit off, hold the switch in the off
position for five seconds.
NOTE
The unit is shipped with keys that allow you to lock the front-panel
enclosure doors.
HEMi Features

The RF Output feature requires a QAM Circuit Card.
NOTE
To upgrade HEMi with additional encoder channels, you must install a
feature key. Your unit also must include the required audio/video
hardware components.

The IP Output feature requires a 10/100/1000 BaseT network interface
card (NIC).

If HEMi is configured with the IP Output feature only, it can support up to
9 encoder channels.
NOTE
The Add/Drop feature requires a Tuner Card and the RF Bypass Module.
Installation requirements vary, but in most cases you will want to use a
deployment process that conforms to these general steps:
2 Transport the unit to the field location and complete all cable
connections.(See Cabling the HEMi Unit, page 2-6, for details.)
3 Power up the unit and make adjustments to your settings as needed (for
example, set RF input and output levels and frequencies). You can make
these adjustments using the unit’s LCD keypad or a laptop with an
appropriate HTML browser. (See Chapter 3 - Managing the HEMi Unit, for
details.)
4 A unit that has the Add/Drop feature key enabled includes the RF Bypass
Module. Correctly adjusting the RF input and output levels is essential to
ensure proper operation with the existing RF network. An inline attenuator
is needed when the levels are 20 dBmV or lower. For instructions on
adjusting the RF levels, go to Balancing the RF Input and Output Levels,
page 2-13.

Overview
This chapter describes the safety guidelines, tools, and equipment you
need to install HEMi.
CAUTION
Only trained and qualified personnel should be permitted to install or
replace this equipment and its related items.
General Safety
WARNING
Review the following warnings and cautions to ensure safe handling,
installation, and rack mounting of your HEMi unit.
• Ensure that a fuse or circuit breaker rated no larger than the nominal
AC voltage that will be present on the phase, as the HEMi unit relies
on the building's installation for short-circuit (overcurrent) protection.
• Ensure that this equipment is grounded and that the ground conductor
is connected to an earth ground during normal use.
• Do not work on the system or connect/disconnect cables during
periods of lightning activity.
• If you have the authority to remove circuit cards, make sure you are
properly grounded as electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage elec-
tronic components.
• Opening the HEMi unit puts you at risk of electrical shock. Refer all
internal service to your supplier.
• Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For
systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the
power supply even when the power switch is off and the power cord
is connected.
• Remove jewelry (necklaces, watches, rings, etc.) before working with
any equipment connected to a power source; metal objects will heat
up and can cause burns or weld to terminals.
• Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all
applicable laws and regulations.
• For installation in Restricted Access Locations only.
CAUTION
This system contains a lithium battery. Danger of an explosion exists if
the battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or
equivalent type recommended by battery manufacturer. Only service
personnel have access inside the unit.
Tools Required
Package Contents
NOTE
The HEMi unit has rack mounting ears; however rack-mount support
brackets and screws are not included in your package. Refer to Installing
HEMi Into a Rack, page 2-5 for suggested brackets.
NOTE
If you encounter issues during installation, contact ARRIS Customer
Service and Support. See Headquarters/Customer Service and Support,
page i-viii for details.
Unpacking the HEMi Unit HEMi ships in a tightly packed carton. Please check and inspect the
contents to verify shipping accuracy. If the chassis or other items appear
damaged or pieces are missing or problems arise when installing or config-
uring your system, contact ARRIS Customer Support (888-221-9797 or
email at techsupport.na@arrisi.com).
Save all shipping materials. All warranty returns must use the original
packing materials for the warranty to be honored.
NOTE
If the HEMi unit shipping carton arrives damaged, ask the carrier to
remain present while you unpack and inspect the device. If damage is
noted, file a claim with the carrier immediately.
Installation Location
WARNING
Install the device so that the amount of airflow required for safe
operation is not compromised. The direction of the Airflow for cooling the
HEMi unit is from front to back. To ensure proper ventilation, do not allow
these areas to become obstructed. The recommended clearance on the
front and back of the unit is 1.5 inches
WARNING
To prevent equipment overheating, do not operate in areas exceeding the
maximum recommended ambient temperature.
Precautions for Handling the To ensure proper handling and safety, review the following recommenda-
HEMi unit tions:
• Always install the HEMi unit in an upright position on a horizontal
plane.
• When moving the device, make sure not to bang it against walls or
surrounding objects.
• Connect the power input to a single-phase AC supply with a voltage of
100 - 240VAC and 60/50 Hz.
• Connect the device to a grounded electrical outlet only. If you are
unsure whether the outlet is grounded, consult a qualified electrician.
• Keep the front and back of the device or rack unit away from the wall
or other objects to ensure good ventilation. Poor ventilation might
cause a malfunction.
• Always install the device in an area with air temperatures within the
specified operational range.
NOTE
See Environment, page A-4, for additional requirements concerning
HEMi's physical environment.
NOTE
Rear rack mount support brackets are not included. The HEMi unit chassis
is capable of supporting its own weight and interface cabling without
additional support. If you decide to use rear brackets, we recommend “L”
brackets available at www.hammondmfg.com.
NOTE
Qualified service personnel should perform all service and installations.
To install the HEMi unit into the rack, follow these steps.
1 Position the rack where proper air ventilation is available for safe
operation.
2 Lift the device and slide it into the rack until the brackets are flush with the
mounting strips on both sides of the rack. Be sure to insert the device into
the rack so that the front of the unit faces you.
3 Use the #3 Phillips screwdriver and screws to fasten both sides of the unit.
WARNING
Rack Mounting Warnings The following directions are all part of the rack mounting warnings.
To prevent injury when mounting or servicing the unit in a rack, you must
take special precautions to ensure the rack remains stable. The following
guidelines are provided to ensure your safety:
• The device should be mounted at the bottom of the rack if it is the only
unit in the rack.
• When mounting the device in a partially filled rack, load the rack from
the bottom to the top with the heaviest component at the bottom of
the rack.
• If the rack includes stabilizing devices, install the stabilizers before
mounting or servicing the unit.
• Maintain reliable earth grounding of rack-mount equipment. Pay
attention to all components of the supply connection, especially outlet
strips, as well as the direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g.,
power strips).
• If the device is installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the
operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be
greater than the room ambient temperature. The device’s actual oper-
ating environment must not exceed 50°C (122 °F).
WARNING
Ensure that the ground connection is always connected first and
disconnected last.
NOTE
HEMi is shipped in two rear-panel configurations. See Figure 1-2, HEMi
Rear View (Configuration 1), on page 1-3, and Figure 1-3, HEMi Rear
View (Configuration 2), on page 1-3, for details. The two configurations
are functionally identical, and the cabling instructions in this section apply
to both configurations.
Be sure to confirm that you have the correct unit configuration on hand
before starting the cabling process.
If your unit does not include the RF Bypass Switch (that is, it does not
include the Add/Drop feature), go to step 5 to begin the cabling process.
Otherwise, begin with step 1.
NOTE
An RF inline attenuator may be required on the QAM Out connector of the
RF Bypass Module. See Balancing the RF Input and Output Levels,
page 2-13, for details
RF Bypass Module
NOTE
If your installation does not include a channel deletion filter, do not
remove the terminators on the Filter In and Out connectors located on
the RF Bypass Module. The terminators are required for the unit to
operate normally.
RF Bypass Module
NOTE
Begin the cabling process here if your unit does not include an RF Bypass
Switch (does not have the Add/Drop feature installed). You must connect
each audio port to an appropriate audio source device and each video
port to an appropriate video source device.

7 Connect the audio source’s left and right audio channels to the supplied
mini stereo jack adapter. Repeat this process of each source.
8 Connect the mini stereo jack adapter to the audio input at a location
indicated by the red dots. Repeat this process for each Audio Input.

Connect a CAT5 cable with an RJ45 connector (not included) to the
Primary IP Media Port located at the red dot. Connect the other end of the
CAT5 cable to the primary router or other IP device. Connect a second
CAT5 cable with an RJ45 connector (not included) to the Redundant IP
Media Port located at the blue dot. Connect the other end of the CAT5
cable to the redundant router or other IP device.
10 (Perform this step only if your unit supports the RF Output feature but
does not support the Add/Drop feature.) Connect the QAM card RF output
connector located at the red dot to the RF system combiner or other RF
device.

WARNING
Use care when connecting units to the mains supply circuit so that wiring
is not overloaded.
11 Connect the supplied power cable to the power supply and to a standard
100 - 240 VAC 60/50 Hz power outlet.
12 Open the right front panel door. Press the On/Off switch located at the
red dot to turn the device on.
RF Leveling For optimum performance, set the network RF input and output signal
levels to match the levels shown in Table 2-1.
2 Go to Row 2 in the table below and, moving across the table, locate the
column with the nearest value to the measured network RF input level.
NOTE
The RF power levels in Table 2-1 apply to digital channels only.
a. The inline Coax Attenuator is installed on the QAM Out connector on the RF By-
pass Module.
3 Move down the column to Row 4 to determine the required HEMi RF QAM
card output power level setting.
4 Adjust the QAM card output to the desired level. The default setting is 55
dBmV. To learn more about adjusting this setting, see Table 3-29 on
page 42.
5 Continue moving down this column to Row 5. If the table cell contains a
value of 5 dB or 10 dB, you must install an inline attenuator with the same
value on the HEMi QAM Out connector on the RF Bypass Module.

Overview
This chapter describes the procedures for managing the HEMi unit. The
browser-based control panel and the front-panel controls allow you to
modify the unit RF tuner, QAM demodulator, multichannel encoders, multi-
plexer, modulator, upconverter, and IP streaming features.
NOTE
Your Web browser must be either Netscape 7.0, Internet Explorer 5.0 or
higher, Firefox 1.5, or Mozilla 5.0 or higher.
CAUTION
Only trained and qualified personnel should be permitted to install or
replace this equipment and its related items.
NOTE
If your installation consists of more than one HEMi unit, we suggest
bookmarking each unit in your browser application. This will enable you
to quickly access individual systems as needed.
Tables in this section explain HEMi parameters. All parameters are acces-
sible through the browser-based control panel. Many parameters also are
accessible through the unit’s front-panel controls (Figure 3-1).
NOTE
Steps always begin at the unit’s Edge Encoder START screen.
NOTE
If the LCD is in sleep mode, you can activate it by pressing the button.
The LCD Navigation column includes icons and text (Table 3-2) to indicate
the actions you should take to locate a parameter using the LCD and
keypad.
Key Explanation
LCD’s top-level screen. A next to START means
you must refer back to this parameter to repeat
START duplicate steps. The duplicate steps are not repeated
in subsequent navigations. Only the new step is
shown.

NOTE
The LCD Navigation steps are included to help you locate parameters. In
most cases you will need to use the enter button () and the arrow
buttons () to modify parameter settings. To save changes to
the settings, you will need to press the enter button () a final time.
Refer to Table 3-3 if you need to adjust the LCD parameters. The display
is only accessible through the front-panel keypad.
Refer to Table 3-4 if you need to reboot or shut down the HEMi unit. The
shutdown parameter is only accessible through the front-panel keypad.
The reboot parameter is accessible through the keypad or the control
panel.
Status Pages
The Status pages includes the Main Page, Advanced Status page, and
System Log page.
NOTE
The RF, Add/Drop, and IP Output pages as displayed on the
Navigation bar to the left require feature keys.
Main Page
The Main Page (Table 3-2) is the control panel’s default page. It provides
an overview of current settings and program activity. You display it by
typing the unit’s assigned IP address in your browser address field. (The
default IP address is 192.168.2.254.)
HEMi Alarms Table 3-5 describes the alarm state. Short messages are displayed indi-
cating any current or saved alarms.
NOTE
The LCD Navigation column shown on the right side of all parameter
tables lists the series of keypad presses needed to navigate to the
parameter using the front-panel LCD and keypad.
Active Programs This section indicates which network and local channels are currently
being output by the HEMi unit. It also indicates how much bandwidth is
being used by the local and network channels. Table 3-6 explains the
section parameters.
NOTE
For more detailed information on the 15 minute and 24 hour minimum
parameters, refer to More on the Network Minimum Parameters,
page 3-47 and More on Local Minimum Parameters, page 3-49.

Do not click the Restart button to clear the alarms
The Advanced Status tab displays the Advanced Status page (Figure 3-3).
Chassis Sensors This section displays real-time metrics on the device’s internal compo-
nents. The unit monitors CPU Temperature, System Temperature, and
CPU Fan Speed and displays current conditions through the Advanced
Status page and the front-panel LCD.
The unit also has a system fan that provides forced-air cooling for internal
components. Table 3-1 explains the section parameters in detail.
NOTE
If a hardware alarm occurs, a short alarm message is displayed under
HEMi Status (left column of any browser page). The full message text
displays on the Main Status page in the HEMi Alarms section. Abbreviated
alarm message text is also viewable through the front-panel LED. See
HEMi Alarms, page 3-6, to learn more.
RF Input Status This section displays in the control panel interface only if the Add/Drop
feature key is installed. Table 3-9 explains the section parameters in detail.
See the RF Input Parameters, page 3-41, for more information on the RF
parameter settings.
IP Stream Counters This section displays in the control panel interface and on the LCD only if
the IP Output feature key is installed. Table 3-10 explains the section
parameters in detail. See the Media Port, page 3-18, for more information
on the Primary and Backup media output ports.
HEMi Identification This section provides a detailed device profile. This information is required
whenever you contact ARRIS for technical assistance. Record the unit
profile on Schedule 1 of the End User Licenses Agreement (see Chapter D
- End-User License Agreement). Be sure to print a hardcopy of the
schedule and store it in a secure location. Table 3-11 explains the section
parameters in detail.
HEMi Feature Status This section shows the optional features currently enabled on the HEMi
unit. Clicking the Install Feature Key button displays the Upgrade page
where you may add optional features to the HEMi unit.
Parameter Explanation
Displays the feature key status. If installed, the
parameter displays the number of available
Encoder Channels: encoder channels. HEMi supports up to 9
encoder channels using a combination of single
and quad-encoder cards.
Displays the feature key status. For the IP
Output feature to be operational, your unit
IP Output Feature: must include an IP Media 10/100/1000 Base T
interface card for transmitting the primary and
backup MPEG-2 UDP/IP streams.

Add/Drop feature to be operational, your unit
must include a tuner card and an integrated RF
Bypass Module for receiving the cable network
RF input. The module ensures network channel

availability even when the unit is being serviced
or maintained. The feature enables the unit to
multiplex locally generated programs with the
cable network’s programs and produce a new
Multiple Program Transport Stream (MPTS).
Displays the feature key status. If installed, the
unit supports RF output. For the RF Output
feature to be operational, your unit must include
RF Output Feature:
a QAM RF card. The MPTS can then be
modulated, upconverted to RF, and reinserted
into the cable network RF spectrum.
The System Log tab displays the System Log page (Figure 3-4). It details
the most recent time-stamped, system-events.
Configure Pages
NOTE
You must submit changes made on the control panel before browsing to a
new page or they will be lost.
Network Page
The Network tab displays the Network Page (Figure 3-5) and allows you
to set network parameters for the unit.
Default Gateway A default gateway is used to redirect IP packets when the packet’s address
points to a destination that is outside the control subnet. Table 3-13
explains the Default Gateway parameters.
Control Port The control port provides access to the unit configuration settings via the
control panel and allows you to manage and configure the unit. HEMi
supports Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), which provides
automatic assignment of the control port IP address. Table 3-14 explains
the control port parameters.
NOTE
DHCP information obtained from a DHCP server by the HEMi unit will
have a lease time associated with it. The lease time defines how long the
client can use the DHCP assigned information.
Media Port HEMi supports a primary IP media output port and a backup IP media
output port. When enabled, both ports stream identical IP media
programs. In a fully redundant IP media distribution system, the primary
output port connects to the primary IP switch/router and the backup
output port connects to the backup IP switch/router. If the primary IP
switch ever goes down and the distribution system has the capability of
implementing fail-over to the backup IP switch, there will be no interrup-
tion in service.
NOTE
The control port and the two media ports must be on separate subnets
and must have distinct network addresses.
Static Routes A static route is created manually and provides a means of explicitly
defining a route for a particular destination network or host. The HEMi unit
provides two optional static routes that can be used to route IP packets on
the primary media network and the backup media network. The static
routes may also be used to route IP packets on the control subnetwork.
Table 3-16 explains these parameters. The explanations apply to both
static routes.

SNMP Page
You can monitor the HEMi unit using the Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) and a compatible element control system. SNMP is widely
used in the management of IP networks, and devices attached to those
networks. The SNMP tab displays the SNMP page (Figure 3-6) and allows
you to define a destination server for trap messages.
SNMP System Parameters Table 3-18 explains the HEMi unit SNMP parameters in more detail.
SNMP Community Strings These strings are similar to passwords for networked devices. Table 3-19
describes these SNMP parameters.

Security Page
The Security page limits access to the control panel. Enabling security does
not affect SNMP or serial port access, however. These interfaces retain
their regular access characteristics.
The security feature requires one username and password for each device.
A group login is not supported, and no activity log or notification is kept.
The security parameters are stored in non-volatile memory. They are not
affected if you restore the device’s factory defaults or upload a configura-
tion file.
Security Parameters Table 3-21 describes the Security Parameters in detail. These parameters
are only accessible via the browser-based control pages.
Parameter Explanation
The default is not enabled. When not enabled, the
remaining parameters are grayed out. When enabled,
a log-in is required to access the control panel. (For an
example Log in page, go to Figure 3-9, Log In Page, on
page 3-31.)
When enabled, a Log In or Log Out button appears at
the bottom of the left navigation bar. The browser must
have a cookie with a valid session ID. (A valid session
ID is one that appears in the encoder’s session table.)
Clicking Log In brings up the Log In page. Clicking Log
Out removes the session from the session table, and
the Log In button appears confirming the log-out
process. Logging out during a software upgrade has no
Require Log-in effect on the upgrade process. Up to 16 users can log
in to a single device at one time.
When log-in is enabled and a user lacks a valid session
ID, all access attempts are redirected to the Log In
page. The Status Main Page, the Upgrade Progress
page, the Log In page, and the GUI unlock page
(guiunlock.php) remain accessible at all times. For
more information on the GUI unlock page, go to
Disabling Security in Case of a Lost Password,
page 3-32.
When log-in is not enabled, all pages are accessible and
no Log In or Log Out button appears in the navigation
bar.
The default is not enabled. When checked, the session
is shared with all browsers on the same computer.
The encoder keeps a table of active GUI sessions. The
Share Session session table is initially empty and is not preserved

Time Protocol Parameters HEMi may be enabled to include date and time information for logged
events such as SNMP trap messages (see SNMP Trap Destination Param-
eters, page 3-23). HEMi can determine date and local time by accessing
either Network Time Protocol (NTP) or Time of Day (ToD) servers. NTP is
a protocol for synchronizing system clocks via IP networks. The time infor-
mation is based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Some cable
systems may not support NTP, in which case you can use the ToD protocol.
ToD servers are typically supported by cable data systems. Table 3-25
explains the parameters. These parameters are only accessible through
the control pages.

System Logging HEMi maintains a log of system events. It also supports remote logging of
these messages using the Syslog protocol. Syslog forwards log and event
messages across an IP network to a Syslog server, which acts as a central
repository of system events that can be accessed and analyzed by the
network administrator. These parameters (in Table 3-26) are only acces-
sible via the browser-based control pages.

NOTE
Some browsers have password management tools. These tools may
recognize the Password field on the Log-in page and offer to remember
the password. The behavior and operation of these tools is entirely a
function of your browser.

The RF Page
The RF page allows you to select a 6 Mhz channel from the network RF
feed. It also allows you to select a 6 Mhz output channel for inserting the
newly formed multiple program transport stream (MPTS) back into the
network RF spectrum. You will typically want the RF input and output
parameters to match.

If the Use Tuner or RF Bypass parameters are enabled or disabled, the
HEMi unit requires several seconds to reconfigure and begin streaming
content normally.

If the HEMi unit loses power or activates a hardware alarm, the RF bypass
mode is automatically set and the network RF signal is passed to the
network RF Out port, bypassing the HEMi unit. The cable network RF
signal is never interrupted due to a HEMi malfunction.

Program Insertion The unit prioritizes locally encoded channels based on their position in the
Prioritization channel list. The channel at the top of the list carries the highest priority;
the next lower channel is next in priority, and so on.
If you enable a local channel that is higher in the list, the unit gives it
priority when assigning output bandwidth. If its bandwidth requirements
exceed the bandwidth Margin, the unit will disable the lowest priority
Enabled channel and allocate its bandwidth to the higher priority channel.
You can potentially bring the disabled channel back online by rebalancing
the bandwidth allocation among the Enabled local channels or by dropping
one or more of the Kept network programs in the incoming network
stream.
Program Page
Each network channel has its own Program page. You can display the
Program page (Figure 3-19) by clicking a link in the Incoming Network
Programs section of the main Add/Drop page. Clicking a link in the Locally-
Encoded Programs section displays the Channel page (Figure 3-20) for the
selected local channel.
Incoming Network Program Table 3-33 describes the Add/Drop Program page parameters.
Channel Page
The Channel page (Figure 3-20) allows you to configure and enable locally
encoded programs. It is also accessible through the Audio/Video button.
NOTE
All PIDs and Program Numbers must be unique. The HEMi unit displays
alarms for duplicate entries and suppresses the local channel associated
with the duplicate entry until the conflict is resolved.
VBI Parameters Table 3-37 explains the local channel’s support for VBI (vertical blanking
interval) data.
IP Streaming Parameters Table 3-38 explains the local channel’s support for IP streaming.

HEMi’s upload function enables you to perform three types of file upload.
You can:
• Upload a new configuration file. If you want to copy a configuration
file to another unit, see Uploading the Configuration File, page 4-2.
• Upload new system software. If you want to replace a unit’s control
software, see Upgrading the HEMi Units Software, page 4-8.
• Upload a feature key file. If you want to enable new features, see
Uploading a KDF File, page 4-14.
To use the procedure outlined below, you need a previously saved HEMi
configuration file. If you don’t have a configuration file but would like to
create one, see Downloading the Configuration File, page 4-20, before
beginning this procedure.
1 Type the HEMi IP address in your browser’s address bar. HEMi displays the
control panel’s Main Page (Figure 4-1, Display the Main Page, on
page 4-3).
3 HEMi displays the Upgrade Main Page (Figure 4-2, Upgrade Main Page, on
page 4-4), which allows you to upload and download configuration files
and reset the HEMi software to the factory default configuration. For this
procedure, we want to upload a configuration file, so click the Browse
button located in the Upload System File section.

You can access the Upgrade pages from any page by clicking the Upgrade
link located in the navigation bar.

6 If the File Status is OK and the File Name and Type are correct, click

message in the Upload File Status section. If this occurs, go to Step 2 and
repeat the upload procedure using the correct file type.
7 The page view changes as the configuration process begins. The Upgrade
Progress field displays 100% (Figure 4-6, Monitor the Configuration
Change, on page 4-8) when the upload is completed.
CAUTION
Do not disturb the HEMi until the Upgrade Progress reaches 100%.
Interfering with this process can corrupt the flash memory of the HEMi
unit. This will require returning the unit to ARRIS for repair.

navigate to the directory where you saved the KDF file.

This procedure enables you to reset the system software to its original
factory defaults.
1 Access the control panel’s Main Page (Figure 4-23, Display the Main Page,
on page 4-25) by entering the HEMi unit’s IP address in your browser’s
address bar.
2 When you are ready to download the configuration file, click Upgrade.
The Upgrade Main Page (Figure 4-24, Display the Upgrade Main Page, on
page 4-26) displays.
5 HEMi shows the status of this operation (Figure 4-26, Monitor Software
Reset, on page 4-28). Wait for the process to complete before continuing
to use the control panel.
HEMi allows you to manually install individual features keys using the
Install Key page (Figure 4-27, Install Key Page, on page 4-29). The page
displays information about HEMi’s optional features. It allows you to enter
feature key passcodes to manually enable individual features one at a
time. You must contact ARRIS Customer Service and Support to obtain the
required passcodes. The page consists of three sections described in detail
below. (For instructions on entering a feature key passcode, see Enabling
a Feature Key, page 4-31.
Installing Feature Keys This section provides information for contacting ARRIS and installing new
feature keys.
Current Feature Status This section lists the optional features that are installed on your unit. (You
can also see this list by browsing to the HEMi Feature Status section of the
Advance Status page.) Feature keys are typically installed when the unit is
initially manufactured or when the unit is upgraded in the field. Table 4-2
lists optional features that maybe installed in your unit. See also HEMi
Features, page 1-9.

Indicates this feature is installed. For the IP
Output feature to be operational, your unit must
include an IP Media 10/100/1000 Base T

network interface card (NIC) for transmitting
the primary and backup MPEG-2 UDP/IP
streams.
Indicates this feature is installed. For the
Add/Drop feature to be operational, your unit
must include a Tuner card and an integrated RF
Bypass Module for receiving the cable network
RF input. The module ensures channel
Add/Drop Feature availability even when the unit is being serviced
or maintained. The Add/Drop feature allows the
unit to multiplex locally generated programs
with the cable network’s programs and produce
a new Multiple Program Transport Stream
(MPTS).
Indicates this feature is installed. For the RF
Output feature to be operational, your unit must
include a QAM RF card. The MPTS can then be
RF Output Feature modulated, upconverted to RF, and reinserted
into the cable network RF spectrum. To uninstall
this feature, you must disable the feature key
and remove the HEMi QAM card.
Manual Feature Key Entry Table 4-3 describes the parameters in the Manual Feature Key Entry
section.
Parameter Explanation
Allows you to manually install or uninstall a feature. The
Feature drop-down list options are Encoder Channels, Add/Drop,
IP Output, and RF Output.
Allows you install or uninstall optional features and
Encoder Channels. If you select Encoder Channels as the
feature to be installed, the drop-down list allows you to

NOTE
Customer Service requires the module ID for this unit to generate a
passcode. The Install Key page (Figure 4-27) provides this information in
the Installing Feature Key section.
2 To access the control panel Main Page (Figure 4-23, Display the Main
Page, on page 4-25), enter the HEMi unit IP address in your browser’s
address bar.
3 Click Upgrade from any control panel page to display the Upgrade page
(Figure 4-24, Display the Upgrade Main Page, on page 4-26).
4 Click Install Key to display the Install Key page (Figure 4-27, Install Key
Page, on page 4-29).
5 Click the Feature drop-down list (Figure 4-28, Complete Feature Key
Fields, on page 4-32) and select the feature you want to install or uninstall.
8 Click Submit, and verify that the Current Feature Status has updated
correctly.
NOTE
If the optional-feature hardware is not installed, HEMi installs the feature
key and raises a hardware alarm.

The HEMi unit includes a browser-based control panel and an LCD control
panel.
The HEMi unit uses alarm messages to help ensure optimal system avail-
ability. If an alarm condition occurs, it displays an abbreviated message
under the HEMi Status heading located on the left side of the browser
page. It also displays a more detailed message in the HEMi Alarms section
of the Main Status page.
You can also view abbreviated system alarms through the unit’s front-
panel LCD and on the Status Main Page.
General Safety
WARNING
Review the following statements to minimize risk while maintaining the
HEMi unit.
• Ensure that this equipment is grounded and that the ground conductor
is connected to an earth ground during normal use.
• Do not work on the system or connect/disconnect cables during
periods of lightning activity.
• If you have the authority to remove circuit cards or other components,
make sure you are properly grounded as electrostatic discharge (ESD)
can damage electronic components.
• Opening the HEMi unit puts you at risk of electrical shock. Follow all
safety procedures and protocols.
• Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For
systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the
power supply even when the power switch is off and the power cord
is connected.
• Remove jewelry (necklaces, watches, rings, etc.) before working with
any equipment connected to a power source; metal objects will heat
up and can cause burns or weld to terminals.
You can order a maintenance kit from ARRIS by requesting Part Number
001Maint-001. The kit includes a CPU fan, system fan, and CMOS battery.
You can also order individual parts using the following part numbers:

ARRIS does not provide optional parts. However, optional parts may be
obtained from the following manufacturers.
• Rear rack mount support brackets. The HEMi chassis is capable of
supporting its own weight and interface cabling without additional
support. If you decide to use rear brackets, we recommend “L”
brackets like those available at www.hammondmfg.com.
• BNC surge protector. BNC surge protectors can be used with the HEMi
unit’s analog video inputs. We recommend the CZ Labs SP-25, which
is available at www.czlabs.com.
• Coax surge protector. A F-type, male-to-female coax surge protector
can be used with the HEMi unit Network RF Input and Output Ports.
We recommend the CZ Labs SP-2, which is available at
www.czlabs.com.
You need a grounding strap and a #3 Phillips screwdriver for this proce-
dure.
CAUTION
These instructions only apply to a stand-alone replacement fan. They are
not intended to be used with boxed units that include the fan and
heatsink as a single assembly.
8 Connect your grounding strap to an earth ground. Ensure that you and the
unit are fully grounded before proceeding.
9 Take off the top cover by removing the two side screws and one rear
screw.
10 Locate the CPU fan near the back of the enclosure next to the power
supply. (See Figure B-1 for details.)

13 Carefully remove the four mounting screws and lift the fan off the
heatsink.
14 Mount the new fan on the heatsink while being careful not to over torque
the screws.

9 Remove the top cover by removing the two side screws and one rear
screw. HEMi configurations include two types of system fans. If the fan in
your unit is mounted on left side of the enclosure (as viewed from the
front), see System Fan on Left Side of the Enclosure, page B-8. If the fan
in your unit is mounted in the middle of the enclosure, see System Fan in
Middle of Enclosure, page B-15.
1 Locate the system fan in the left-front section of the enclosure (as viewed
from the front). If your fan is not installed in this position, go to page B-15.

3 Carefully thread the fan power cable under other nearby cables so the fan
can be removed completely from the enclosure.
4 Carefully remove the four screws securing the fan bay. Take care not to
drop or loose the star washer when removing the grounding strap.

5 Carefully slide the fan bay back until you have enough clearance to tilt the
front grill up and lift the fan bay out of the enclosure.

6 Turn the fan bay over and place it on a solid work surface.

8 Mount the new fan while being careful not to over torque the screws.
9 Replace the fan bay by angling the unit under the enclosure support bar.
Level the fan bay and carefully slide it forward until the screw holes align
with the threaded mounting points.
10 Replace the fan bay’s four mounting screws. Make sure the star washer is
placed under the grounding strap.
11 Thread the fan power cable under the existing enclosure wires.
1 Locate the system fan near the middle-front section of the enclosure. If
your fan is not installed in this position, go to page B-8.

4 Mount the new fan on the enclosure frame while being careful not to over

10 Locate the battery on the motherboard. It is about the size of a coin and
installed in a lateral socket. (See Locate the CMOS Battery, page B-20.)

14 Install a new battery, making sure to put the +/- poles in the same position
as the original battery.
This appendix describes procedures for setting up the HEMi unit using a
terminal emulator. It includes sections on configuring the control port and
setting up the Command Line Interface (CLI).
2 Connect the other end of the cable to the HEMi unit’s left-hand RS-232
port, which is located at the red dot on Figure C-1.
4 Enter the name, HEMi, in the Name text box. Select an icon, if desired.
NOTE
You are not required to choose an icon during this step.
5 Click OK.
6 Select a COM port from the drop-down menu, and then click OK. The COM
Properties dialog box displays (Figure C-4).
8 Click OK.
9 Wait for the unit to boot-up and initialize the network configuration utility.
10 Input 1 to select the control port network, and then press Enter.
11 Input the desired IP address when prompted, and press Enter. The
factory-default IP address is 192.168.2.254.
12 Input the subnet mask for your network when prompted. The factory-
default is 255.255.252.0.
13 Input the gateway address for your network when prompted. The factory-
default gateway address is 192.168.1.1.
Once these entries are input, HEMi will configure itself and reboot auto-
matically.

Ethernet interface as shown in the following example.

Option 4—The Ping Utility: This uses the simple form of the ICMP
protocol to provide IP accessibility information from the unit to the
external hosts. The user is prompted for an IP address when option 4 is
selected. No options are allowed to be entered as part of the IP address.

You can use the CLI to require or disable the log in feature and change the
user name and password.

2 Choose the appropriate action for configuring security. (Review the next
several paragraphs for additional information.)
Security Configuration
The Require/Disable Log-in option toggles the security state (the same as
Require Log-in parameter on the Security parameters page) without
changing the username or password. The sub-menu option is Require Log-
in if security is currently disabled or Disable Log-in if security is currently
enabled. If the security state is toggled, the confirmation messages Log-
in is now required or Log-in is now disabled displays and the utility
returns to the sub menu.
The Change User Name and Password option prompts you for user name,
password, and password confirmation. Your input is validated and a confir-
mation message or error message is displayed. If your input is valid, the
new security settings are saved and a confirmation message containing
the user name displays. You can press Enter to move through the prompts
and return to the sub menu with no action taken.
You can use the serial port menu or the Security page to change the
parameters that appear in both places (such as username and password).
This End-User License Agreement, along with any exhibit annexed hereto
(collectively, the "Agreement"), is a binding legal agreement by and
between ARRIS Intl., Inc. ("ARRIS"), with its principal place of business at
75 5th Street, Suite 410, Atlanta, Georgia 30308, and you (“Buyer” or
“You”).
D.1 Software
D1.4 Restrictions on Use. Buyer agrees that it will not, nor permit any third
party(ies) to, in whole or in part: (a) disassemble, decompile, reverse engi-
neer or translate into another computer language the ARRIS Software or
Hardware; (b) copy or otherwise reproduce the ARRIS Software or Hard-
ware; (c) except as expressly authorized herein, remove, modify or other-
wise tamper with notices or legends on the ARRIS Software or Hardware;
(d) create derivative works from, adapt, modify, change, improve, or
enhance the ARRIS Software or Hardware; or (e) distribute, sell, license,
sublicense, lease, or otherwise transfer by any means or in any form, by
operation of law or otherwise, the ARRIS Software, other than as part of
the lawful sale of a unit(s) of the Hardware itself, without ARRIS’s prior
written consent. Buyer agrees that it will not (i) remove the ARRIS Soft-
ware from the Hardware or replace the ARRIS Software with other soft-
ware, or (ii) store, load, or otherwise add other software on the Hardware
without ARRIS’s prior, written consent.
D1.5 Ownership and Reservation of Rights. This license does not provide Buyer
with title to or ownership of the ARRIS Software, but only a limited right
to use the ARRIS Software as provided herein. Any use of the ARRIS Soft-
ware not expressly provided for in this Agreement is prohibited.
D2.1 Hardware and Software. ARRIS hereby represents and warrants to Buyer
only that: (a) at the time of delivery and for a period of 12 months there-
after, the Hardware shall operate in good working order and without mate-
rial defects, in substantial conformity with all applicable specifications; and
(b) the ARRIS Software will substantially conform to its published specifi-
cations for a period of 12 months from the later of receipt of the Equip-
ment containing the ARRIS Software or receipt of access to the ARRIS
Software. Provided that (x) Buyer has notified ARRIS of any substantial
non-conformance of the Hardware or Software during the applicable
warranty period, and (y) ARRIS has confirmed such substantial non-
conformance, as Buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy and ARRIS’s entire
liability and obligation under this limited warranty, ARRIS will, at its sole
option and expense, repair, replace, or grant a refund for the Hardware or
Software, as the case may be. Except as expressly provided in this Agree-
ment, the Hardware and Software are provided “AS IS” without warranty
of any kind. ARRIS does not warrant that the ARRIS Software is error-free
or that Buyer will be able to operate the ARRIS Software without problems
or interruptions. ARRIS reserves the right to charge additional fees for
repairs or replacements performed outside of the applicable limited
warranty period, but is under no obligation to provide any such repairs or
replacements.
D2.2 Third-Party Warranties. After the expiration of the warranties set forth in
Section 2.1, with respect to Hardware and Software components of the
Equipment that are originally manufactured by third parties, Buyer shall
only be entitled to warranties, if any, as allowed by the manufacturers of
such components. Limited warranty statements from the original manufac-
turers of certain components of the Equipment may be shipped with the
Equipment and pass through to the Buyer.
D2.3 Warranties Void. ARRIS’s warranties are void if any Equipment damage
has resulted from accident, abuse, misapplication, misuse, or failure to use
the Equipment in strict accordance with documentation, user manuals or
other instructions of ARRIS, or service or modification by someone other
than ARRIS.
D3.5 Risk of Loss. The risk of loss for the Equipment passes to Buyer upon
delivery by ARRIS or its agents or contractors to a third-party carrier for
shipment to Buyer.
D.4 General
D4.3 Binding Nature and Assignment. This Agreement will inure to the benefit
of and be binding on the parties, and their successors, permitted assigns
and legal representatives. Neither party may assign its rights or obligations
under this Agreement (in whole or in part), except that ARRIS may assign
its rights or obligations to a corporation or other entity that acquires (i) all,
or substantially all, of the assets or business of ARRIS, or (ii) a majority of
the shares of stock of ARRIS, without the express written consent of
Buyer. Any assignment in violation of the provisions of this paragraph shall
be void.
D4.4 Remedies Cumulative. Subject to the express limitations set forth else-
where in this Agreement, all remedies in this Agreement are cumulative
and in addition to and not in lieu of any other remedies available to a party
at law or in equity.
D4.5 Survival. The provisions of sections 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.4, 2.5, and 3 of this
Agreement shall survive any termination and/or expiration of this Agree-
ment.
D4.6 Force Majeure. ARRIS will not be responsible for delays or failures in
performance resulting from acts beyond its reasonable control and without
its fault or negligence. If there is any such delay, then the periods for the
completion of ARRIS’s obligations hereunder will be automatically
extended by the period of such delay.
D4.7 Use of Buyer’s Name. Buyer grants ARRIS permission to use Buyer’s name
and logo in ARRIS’s client lists, website, press releases, and marketing
materials.
D4.10 Injunctive Relief. Buyer agrees that any violation or threat of violation of
this Agreement will result in irreparable harm to ARRIS, for which damages
would be an inadequate remedy. In addition to any rights and remedies
otherwise available at law, ARRIS shall be entitled to request equitable
relief to prevent any unauthorized use or disclosure, and to such other and
further equitable relief as may be deemed proper under the circumstances.
D4.11 Arbitration. Any controversy or claim between You and ARRIS, its subsid-
iaries and affiliates, and their officers, directors and employees, arising out
of or relating to this Agreement or Your use of the Equipment or any
component thereof, shall be settled by binding arbitration, before a single

by, and construed and interpreted in accordance with, the substantive
laws of the State of Georgia, without regard to the conflicts of law rules
thereof. Exclusive jurisdiction and venue for litigation of any dispute,
controversy or claim arising out of or in connection with this Agreement or
any breach thereof shall be in a federal or state court of competent juris-
diction located in the State of Georgia, Fulton County. The parties hereby
irrevocably consent to the jurisdiction and venue of such courts and waive
any defenses relating thereto.
