4 Engine Systems

1. Fuel System
2. Cooling System
3. Lubrication System
4. Starting System

Parts of Fuel System

a. Fuel Pump
b. Fuel lines
c. Fuel Filters
d. Carburetor
e. Combustion Chamber

Cooling System – a system that prevents the engine from overheating.

Parts of Cooling System

1. Coolant/Water – a chemical substance that removes the heat from the engine.
2. Radiator – is an iron-shaped composers used to cool coolant. The working principle of the
radiator is to move the temperature from water to free air. A device where the coolant/water
circulates from high temperature into low temperature.

3. Engine/Rdiator Fan – A device that drives air to cool down the engine.

4. Radiator Cap/Pressure cap – serves as the cover of the upper tank radiator while keeping the air
pressure inside the cooling system.

5. Radiator Hoses – supply radiator coolant from the engine to the radiator and back to the engine.
Channeling the coolant and made of special rubber which is designed to survive at high
temperature bit it is flexible too.

2 Types of Radiator Hoses

Radiator input hose – channels high temperature from the engine

Radiator Outlet hose – carries low- temperature coolant to be supplied back to the water jacket
on the engine.
6. Thermostat – Speeds up the engine to get the working temperature. Regulating the engine
temperature. It is the temperature water regulator. When the engine is cold, the valve of
the thermostat is held shut to prevent coolant into the radiator. When the engine heats up, the
valve opens so that coolant can circulate through the engine and cool the system.

7. Water Jackets- Place to absorb engine heat evenly. It is a water channel around the engine. It
will increase the engine block temperature and the cylinder head. It avoids the mixture of Fuel
and water in the engine system.

8. Reservoir Tanks -- This tube serves to store evaporative cooling water. To stabilize the air
temperature, evaporated coolant will be channeled into a tube through the radiator cap. In this
tube, moisture will be condensed again to become a liquid.

9. Water Pump – Circulate the coolant to move inside the cooling channel. It drives water or
coolant inside the engine.

Activity:

Make an illustration/drawing of engine cooling system that shows the proper flow of coolant.
