ACTIVITY 1

Paciente, Angelie S., BSN1-F

1. The common laboratory procedures presented in the videos are

Measuring a specific volume of a liquid using graduated cylinder,
Measuring the mass of a substance using electronic balance, Measuring
temperature using thermometer, Separation of a mixture using filtration,
and lastly Lighting and Adjusting a Bunsen Burner.

2. The laboratory apparatuses used in each of the procedure are Electronic

balance, Graduated cylinder, Thermometer, Weighing paper, Stand and
clamp, Funnel, Ring clamp, and Bunsen burner.

3.
a. The procedure on Measuring the mass of substance was done through
the use of an Electronic balance, first is we should turn on and place a
weighing boat or paper on the pan and re-zero the balance, add the
substance to the weighing boat or paper, and stop if we’ll successfully
obtain the correct amount required. If the substance will be spilled off on
the balance it must be clean immediately for the next use.

b. The procedure on Measuring a specific volume of a liquid was done

through the use of graduated cylinder, first is we should select a graduated
cylinder where mL of di-water needed can be measured exactly on it, use
the di-water wash bottle to top off the level of water in the graduated
cylinder to how much mL is exactly needed in the procedure. We can look
its correct measurement on having an eye correctly below on its
margins/lines not above the margin. Lastly, we can combine the liquid and
the solid after all the procedures for example water with the salt and sand.

c. The procedure on Measuring temperature was done through the use of a

thermometer by submerging the apparatus as deep as possible without
touching the container, hold it by the use of hands or stand and clamp, we
should not let our thermometer’s tip sink/touch the container, rest the
apparatus horizontally, and lastly we should read the thermometer correctly
on its level of precision.
d. The procedure on Separation of a mixture was done through use of
filtration by having a funnel supported by triangle which is in turn supported
by a ring clamp to stand and an empty beaker, filter paper has been folded
two times and has four layers we will grab the three fold of it and pull them
into one side forming a cone, Decanting technique will be applied on
pouring using a glass rod, the goal is to eventually transfer all the sand into
the filter paper so we need to rinse the beaker with the di-water wash
bottle. The result should be all the sand is into the filter paper and all salt
water will be in the beaker.

e. The procedure in Lighting and Adjusting a Bunsen burner was done

through having more safety measures than the procedures earlier. First is
we should gather all the appropriate tool needed, turn the gas value on the
bottom of the burner off (clockwise), turn the combustion column down
(clockwise), hook up the burner to the gas at the laboratory table making
sure that the valve is off, turn on the gas at the table from perpendicular to
parallel position, we’ll open the gas valve on the bottom of the Bunsen
burner and use a striker to light the gas, and lastly if we want to flame to be
more hot then we’ll turn the combustion column counter clockwise to
increase its amount of oxygen.

4. For me, the most challenging procedure is the Lightning and Adjusting a
Bunsen burner because in all the procedures mentioned it has the most
numbered steps to do, it needs to be more cautious and always have a
safety measure on each step such as wearing an apron and goggles. And
the most exciting procedure for me is the Separation of mixture using
filtration because I am a person who would love to be skillful and see each
step on how the activity went well or transformed to its successful result.

5. In my own opinion, Yes, enrolling in a laboratory class in this time of

pandemic has been more important especially that these time we need to
be more safe and cautious. I believe enrolling in this course will help us
students to develop more scientific practices one at a time and it is possible
to reach virtually when students and professors will work together. This
virtual class will still gave us additional knowledge on investigating
safeness and utilizing laboratory equipments that we’ll be able to use, can
be in our daily lives, in home, in our future professions and in many aspects
in life.
