 In this poem, Jose Corazon de Jesus is warning readers what and who not to fall
in love with, and what love truly should be. The first four stanzas are warnings to
the reader about who not to fall in love with, and in stanza four, Corazon de
Jesus warns readers against falling in love with someone solely on the basis of
being comfortable. He states that love based on financial comfort and short
term fun will not last. By stating the traits of "prosperous", "comfort" and
"delight", Corazon de Jesus is noting the traits which cannot truly be love. This is
in direct contrast with the words he uses in talking about true love, where he
uses terms such as "perish" and "unlucky". This contrast is ironic, since false
love is comfortable and true love is not. However, Corazon de Jesus ends the
stanza saying "love is not deceived", meaning that prosperity, comfort, and
delight cannot ultimately force true love to appear from these feelings.
