I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Dances

Dance is the art of gliding, stepping, or leaping through a rhythmic series of movements,
usually in time to music.

The dance employs no other instrument but the human body itself, which is the most eloquent
and responsive of all the instruments. Thus, the dance us the most personal of all art media.

Latin American Dances

Samba. Samba originates from Brazil where it is a national dance. Many versions of the Samba-
from Baion to Marcha- are dances at the local carnival in Rio. To achieve the true characters of the
Samba a dancers must give it a gay, flirtatious and exuberant interpretation. Many figures in the
Samba today, require a pelvic tilt action. This action is difficult to accomplish, but without it the
dance loses much of its effect.

Rumba. Originating in Cuba, Rumba has become the classic Latin American dance where the
focus is on impressing and seducing the opposite sex. Dances to this pulsating, romantic music, the
dance is an erotic and passionate love story between man and woman expressing the love and
tension of a courtship ritual. The woman tries to lure and challenge the man with her feminine
charm, only to finally reject him; all the while the man , embodying the macho Latin lover, is trying
to attract her. The whole dance could be summarized as “tease and run”!

Cha- Cha- Cha. Cha- cha-cha is the newcomer of the Latin American dances. This dance was first
seen in the dance halls of America, in the early fifties, following closely Mambo, from which it was
developed. The interpretation of cha-cha-cha music should produce a happy carefree, party-time-
like atmosphere. Recently it was decided to shorten the name to Cha-Cha.

Viennese Waltz. The energetic and romantic Viennese Waltz is exhilarating to dance and lovely
to watch as the couples sweep and spin across the dance floor. Viennese Waltz is definitely the
oldest of the standard ballroom dances, as its origins date back to 12 th /13th century folk dances in
Europe.

Tango. The Tango is the most powerful and dramatic standard and dramatic standard ballroom
dance, with big movements and quick snaps of the head from one position to another. Tango is
originated in Buenos Aires (Argentina), from a dance called the “Milonga”.

Foxtrot. Beautiful to watch, the Foxtrot is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long ,
continuous flowing movements across the dance floor. It is danced to big band (usually vocal)
music, and the feeling is the one of the elegance and sophistication.

Waltz. The gracefully and elegant waltz, with its long, flowing movements, continuous turns , and
rise and fall, is the most timelessly romantic of all the dances. It is the first dance most people
think of when they think of dancing on a special occasion. Today’s waltz is often danced to
modern ballads and soft rock classics, adapting itself perfectly to popular music style.

Quickstep. The light and sparkling quickstep is one of the most fun and lighthearted of the
standard ballroom dances. The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled
with syncopations. Its origins are in a combination of slow foxtrot combined with Charleston, a
dance which was one of the precursors to what today is called swing dancing.
