BRIEF INTRODUCTION
22

Software, commonly known as programs or apps, consists of all the

instructions that tell the hardware how to perform a task.
System software includes operating systems, device drivers, diagnostic
tools and more. System software is almost always pre-installed on
your computer.

TOPIC: COMPUTER APPLICATION SOFTWARE

Objectives:
1. Define what Computer Application Software is.
2. Identify the Different Types of Application Software.
3. List and enumerate some of the application software needed in a workplace.
LEARNING CONTENT:
An application software is any program, or group of programs, that is designed for
the end user. Applications software (also called end-user programs) includes such
things as database programs, word processors, Web browsers and spread sheets.

Application Software - Is a computer software designed to help the user to

perform singular or multiple related special tasks
Application software utilizes the capacities of a computer directly to a dedicated
task and able to manipulate text, numbers, and graphics. It can be in the form of
software focused on a certain single task like word processing, spread sheet or
playing of audio and video files.

Word Processing Software: This software enables the users to create and edit
documents. The most popular examples of this type of software are MS Word, Word
Pad, Note Pad and some other text editors.
Database Software: Database is structured collection of data. A computer
database relies on database software to organize the data and enables the database
users to achieve database operations. Database software allows the user to store and
retrieve data from databases. MS Access is the best example of database software.
Spread Sheet Software: Excel, Lotus 1,2, 3 and Apple Numbers are some
examples of spread sheet software. Allows the user to perform calculations, they
stimulate paper work sheets by displaying multiple cells that make up a grid.
Multimedia Software: They allow the users to create and play audio and video
media. They are capable of playing media files, Audio converters, players, burners,
video encoders and decoders are some forms of multimedia software, examples of
this type of software includes Real Player and Media Player.
Presentation Software: The software is used to display information in the form of
a slideshow is known as presentation software. This type of software includes three
functions, namely, editing that allows insertion and formatting text, methods to include
graphics in the text and a functionality of executing the slideshows. Microsoft power
Point is the best example of presentation software.
Examples of Application Software
Enterprise Software: it deals with the needs of organization processes and data
flow. The customer relationship management or the financial processes in an
organization are carried out by means of enterprise software.
Educational Software: It has the capabilities of running tests and tracking
progress. It also has the capabilities of collaborative software. It is often used in
teaching and self-learning.

6
Content Access Software: It is use to access content without editing. The
common examples of content access software are web browsers, media players and
games.

REMEMBER

Sources:

Application software is commonly used today for various computer

activities all over the world. The existence of this software helps people to edit
text, images, videos, music, etc.
Thus we see that application software have made it possible for the users

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

A peripheral device connects to a computer system to add functionality.

Examples are a mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer and scanner. Learn about
the different types of peripheral devices and how they allow you to do more with
your computer.

TOPIC 2: COMPUTER PERIPHERALS

10
What are Peripherals?
A peripheral is a device that is connected to a host computer, but not part of it. It
expands the host’s capabilities but does not form part of the core computer
architecture. It is often, but not always, partially or completely dependent on the host.

Types of Peripherals
Input used to interact with or send data to the computer (mouse, keyboards, etc,)
Output provide output to the user from the computer (monitor. Printers, etc.)
Storage store data process by the computer (hard drives, flash drives, etc.)
Common Peripherals
Input
• Keyboard - Is one of the main input devices used on a computer, a PC's
keyboard looks very similar to the keyboards of electric typewriters, with some
additional keys.
• Mouse - is an input device that allows an individual to control a mouse pointer
in a graphical user interface (GUI). Utilizing a mouse a user has the ability to
perform various functions such as opening a program or file and does not
require the user to memorize commands, like those used in a text-based
environment such as MS-DOS.
• Touch screen – use to display device which allows the user to interact with a
computer by touching areas on the screen.
• Scanner - Hardware input device that allows a user to take an image and/or
text and convert it into a digital file, allowing the computer to read and/or display
the scanned object. A scanner is commonly connected to a computer USB, Fire
wire, Parallel or SCSI port.
• Webcam - A camera connected to a computer or server that allows anyone
connected to the Internet to view still pictures or motion video of a user.
• Microphone - an instrument for converting sound waves into electrical energy
variations which may then be amplified, transmitted, or recorded.
• Other – input devices
Output
• Display devices - Is an output device for presentation of information in visual
or tactile form (the latter used for example in tactile electronic displays for blind
people). When the input information that is supplied has an electrical signal
the display is called an electronic display
• Graphical output device - A display device is an output device that visually
conveys text, graphics, and video information Display devices include CRT
monitors, LCD monitors and displays, gas plasma monitors, and televisions.
• Speaker - A hardware device connected to a computer's sound card that
outputs sounds generated by the card.
• Printer - An external hardware device responsible for taking computer data and
generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are one of the most used

11
peripherals on computers and are commonly used to print text, images, and/or
photos.
• Other – output device

Storage

• Hard drives - Computer's main storage media device, also called a hard disk
drive or abbreviated as HD or HDD.
• CD/DVD/BD Drives - CD-ROM drives are CD-Players inside computers that
has the capability of playing audio CDs and computer data CDs. DVD-RW Drive
is a technology that enables a user to read and write to a DVD+RW or DVD+R
disc several times.
• Flash drives - a small electronic device containing flash memory that is used
for storing data or transferring it to or from a computer, digital camera, etc.
• Other storage devices
What are NOT Peripherals

• Computer casing - This is the housing that helps protect and organize all the
components that make up your computer..
• Power Supply Unit - The PS is an internal hardware component used to supply
the components within the computer with power. Besides properly supplying
power to the computer and all its internal components, the power supply also
converts the AC electrical current found in most standard wall sockets
throughout the United States into a lower DC voltage that the computer
components use.
• Motherboard - is a printed circuit that is the foundation of a computer and
allows the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components to function
with each other.
• CPU – (Central Processing Unit) was first developed by Intel in 1974. The
computer CPU is responsible for handling all instructions and calculation it
receives from other hardware components in the computer and software
programs running on the computer.
• RAM - is a term commonly used to describe the memory within a computer.
