Abstract

Renewable energy, which includes biofuels, solar heat, wind, hydro, wave, tidal, and

ocean-thermal energy. Renewable energy is a general concept that refers to a variety of energy

sources. Renewable energy is an important part of any country's energy policy because renewable

energy helps the growth of our country. This work focuses about the different types of renewable

sources.

Introduction

This research provides background information about Renewable Energy resources. This

report paper focuses about the different types of renewable energies and how they help our

environment to our economy to provide all natural needs that helps in our daily lives. The approach

is based on reliable websites and review of existing studies and judgement of experts. The report

is prepared for Utilities 1 to be passed in one of our professors.

Definitions

Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is energy that is created by natural processes and is renewed on a regular

basis. Renewable energy is a suitable alternative fossil-fuel-based energy, and it is generally less

damaging to the environment. This energy is never drained and is continually replenished. Solar,

wind, geothermal, hydropower, and ocean energy are examples of renewable energy that rely on

natural processes.

Alternative Energy

Alternative energy is a word that refers to a source of energy that is not derived from fossil

fuels. It often denotes non-traditional energy sources with little environmental effect. According

to some sources, the phrase alternative is used to contrast with fossil fuels.

Biomass

Biomass is a type of renewable organic matter that includes biological material generated

through living or recently lived creatures, such as wood, trash, and alcoholic fuels.

Bioenergy

Bioenergy is a form of renewable energy produced from biomass. People must, although,

do some additional labor to extract energy from plant or animal sources, which is generally done

by burning them. Hydrogen is the newest renewable energy on the marketplace. A chemical

method extracting it from water is one of the cleanest ways to make it.

Wood Energy

Wood energy may be produced from both harvested wood and wood waste products. City

and county trash, industry waste, and landfill gas can all be used to create waste energy. Ethanol,

or biomass alcohol fuel, is nearly entirely made from maize.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a type of diesel fuel that is produced from plant oils. They're usually

manufactured from organic renewable raw resources like soybean or rapeseed oils, animal fats,

waste vegetable oils, or microalgae oils.

Types of Renewable Energy

Hydroelectric Power

Hydroelectric power generates electricity by harnessing the energy contained in the

flow of water in dams and rivers. Turbines spin when the flow is released. Turbines create

power as a result of this process. Hydropower has a long history, dating back to 1771. The

earliest usage was as an English mill, according to historians. The mill spun cotton using

the energy of a nearby running river.

The most widely used renewable energy source on the planet is hydroelectric

electricity. It accounts for 71% of all renewable energy on the planet. The fact that rivers

usually always flow contributes to their attractiveness. The availability of the sun or wind

is, of course, influenced by the weather. Hydropower, on the other hand, provides energy

at all hours of the day and night, regardless of the season.

6|Page
The capability of hydropower generating is aided by "pump storage." Water is

pumped back into storage reservoirs by pumps. When the natural flow is reduced, the

stored water is released through the turbines. As a result of the regular flow, power

generation is more evenly distributed. Pumps ensure that hydropower can generate

electricity at all times. Even when rivers or dams have less water flowing through them.

Solar Energy

Solar energy is the process of turning solar energy into thermal or electrical energy,

and it is one of the cleanest and most plentiful renewable energy sources available. The

sun's energy is used in this form of renewable energy. Solar cells are used here, and the

photovoltaic effect is used to absorb photons. By turning photons into electricity, we can

7|Page
create power. Photovoltaics, or PV systems, were only available on a limited scale in the

beginning. Small solar panels were used to power calculators at first. Solar energy systems

on a huge scale now generate massive quantities of electricity.

Wind Power

After a number of nations adopted the technology to cut emissions, wind energy

has become one of the fastest-growing renewable energy sources. The method includes

using wind to generate electricity by harnessing the kinetic energy generated by moving

air. Wind turbines or wind energy conversion devices convert this into electrical energy.

Onshore which is by far the largest market or offshore, utilizing either fixed-bottom

8|Page
turbines moored to the sea floor or, on a considerably smaller scale, floating structures that

can be placed in deeper seas, the technology may be implemented.

Biomass

Once upon a time, biomass was the most widely used renewable energy source. For

Biomass, we may transform organic resources into energy. Of course, this isn't a novel

idea. For millennia, humans have used wood to generate energy. It is frequently utilized in

power generation as wood pellets, which are collected from forests and burnt to produce

energy. Basic biomass materials are created by biological processes. The majority of the

basic materials are grown. Geological processes, on the other hand, provide the basic

ingredients for fossil fuel energy. Thousands of years can pass throughout this procedure.

As a result, unlike fossil fuels, biomass benefits from a faster and cleaner raw material

source.

Tidal Power

Tidal energy is produced by transferring energy from the strong tides into

electricity, and its output is more predictable than wind and solar energy. Tidal power has

a lot of future promise for similar reasons as wind power. The tides are predictable and

consistent. Tidal energy has a lengthy history as well. Dams, for example, were built to

hold back water from increasing tides as early as 900AD. And the stored water-powered

water wheels were unleashed. The energy generated was utilized to mill flour for bread

making.

Geothermal Energy

The ground provides geothermal energy. Geothermal heat, which is generated from

the earth's inherent energy and utilized to generate power, is both natural and sustainable.

Geothermal energy combines natural energy sources such as hot springs with other sources

such as magma and hydrothermal circulation. There are three types of geothermal power

stations now in use for processing raw energy: dry steam plants, flash steam plants, and

binary cycle plants. Geothermal energy is a promising future power source because of its

consistent and predictable supply, as well as its low cost and minimal carbon footprint.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a clean and adaptable energy carrier that has the potential to impact

many aspects of our economy and revolutionize energy systems. It is generated utilizing

renewable energy. Hydrogen may be utilized as a storage fuel and a possible export

commodity to assist our power industry as an alternative to fossil fuels, including in

substitution of some liquid transport fuels and natural gas. It does not, however, exist in

nature on its own; when coupled with oxygen, it produces water. We can create sustainable

energy by separating hydrogen and burning it. Hydrogen, on the other hand, is energy-

intensive to separate, while being clean-burning. Nonetheless, advancements in this

technique suggest that hydrogen will play a bigger part in our future renewable energy

supply.

Summary

Renewable energies are really helpful to our environment because it provides us a natural

and sustainable energy that we can use in our daily lives. To lessen our fossil fuel consumption,

we choose a better renewable energy source. Choosing sustainable energy sources is more

important today than it has ever been. It's also usually cleaner and less expensive.
