Green Ear Disease of Bajara
In India reported by Butler – 1907

Reported from- UP, MP, HR, Delhi, Punjab, Guj., Knt., Maha.,
TN

Loss – till 100%

Symptoms: (1). Downey mildew stage on leaves

(2). Green ear stage

(3). Shoot & bud deformations stage


1. Downey mildew stage

• Plants - yellow, small and weak

• Leaves - chlorosis, streaks on leaves

• Old leaves affected more than new

• Morning- Downey growth on lower surface of leaves

• Streaks- brown- shrinking of leaves

• On Neocant plants – Downey growth - growth stop and

they die
2. Green Ear stage

• No ear formation

• If form – leafy structure, hairy

• Ear appear as Bunch of Green Leaves so called “Green Ear


Disease”

• No grain formation - may be partially

• Flower parts – glumes, plea, stamens, pistils etc. hypertrophy &


proliferation – convert into leafy structures

• Later leafy structures - dry and become brown


3. Shoot and bud deformation

• Less tillers formation

• Dwarfing & plants look like “Bush”

• Because internodes become small

• Buds become deform

• Auxiliary shoots – proliferate


Casual Organism - Sclerospora graminicola

• Pathogen – Obligate parasite

• Systemic infection

• Sporangophore – di or trichotomous

• Soilborne – Oospore

• Seedborne - Oospore

• R. H. - >75%

• Temp. – 15 – 25° C

Disease Management
• Use certified seed

• Removal of infected plants

• Crop rotation of 5 years

• Seed treatment – Thiram- @ 2.5 gm/ kg seed

• Spray- Mencozeb @2.5 kg/hec

• First spray – 2-3 week after sowing

Second spray - at the time of ear formation

• Disease resistant varieties- Pusa Moti, HB-1, BBH-4, Pusa-23
