TURMERIC
Scientific Name: Curcuma longa
Family: Zingiberaceae
INTRODUCTION
Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
(Family: Zingiberaceae) is used as
condiment, dye, drug and cosmetic in
addition to its use in religious
ceremonies. India is a leading
producer and exporter of turmeric in
the world. Andhra Pradesh, Tamil
Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka, West
Bengal,Gujarat,Meghalaya,Maharasht
ra, Assam are some of the important
states cultivating turmeric, of which,
Andhra Pradesh alone occupies
38.0% of area and 58.5% of
production. During 2013-2014, the
country produced 12.29 lakh tonnes
of turmeric from an area of 2.34 lakh
ha.

IDENTIFICATION
 Egg: is pink, oval, flat and lays singly or in group
on the tender part of the plant.
 Larva: is long, pale greenish with a pinkish was
dorsally, head and pro-thoracic shield brown in
colour and body covered with minute hairs arising
on wards.
 Pupa: Pupation takes place in lose silken coccon in
larval tunnel.
 Adult: is a medium sized moth, the wings are pale
yellowish with black spots on the wings.
 DISTRIBUTION :-
U.P., Punjab, Karnataka, M.P.,Andhra Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka, West Bengal,
Gujarat, Meghalaya, Maharashtra
 Host range :-
Turmeric, Zinger, Caster This is a serious pest
of Turmeric , Zinger ,Caster.
Symptoms of damage
 The larvae bore into pseudostems and feed on
internal tissues resulting in yellowing and drying of
leaves of infested pseudostems.
 The presence of a bore-hole on the pseudostem
through which frass is extruded and the withered
and yellow central shoot is a characteristic
symptom of pest infestation.
LIFE CYCLE
Management

 Spraying malathion 0.1% at 30 day intervals during


July to October is effective in controlling the pest
infestation.

 Thespraying has to be initiated when the first


symptom of pest attack is seen on the inner most
leaves on the pseudostem.

IDENTIFICATION
 Egg: Pinkish oval flat eggs are laid singly or in groups
or 2 or 3 on leaves. The egg, period last for 3-4 days.
 Larva: There are five larval instars, fully grown larvae
are dark green with black head and constricted neck.
The pest is abundant in the field during August -
October. The larval period last for 12-21 days
 Pupa: Pupation takes place on the same plant within a
cell. The pupa is long and cylindrical, watery green in
colour. It has a long conical projection in front of the
head. The most striking characteristic of the pupa is its
proboscis. The pupal period last for 6-7 days
 Adult: Adults are medium sized with brownish black
wings with eight white spots on forewings and one large
patch on hind wing.
 DISTRIBUTION :-
The Leaf roller is one of the serious pests of
turmeric, zinger, etc. having a world wide
occurrence.
 Host range :-
The larvae attack Turmeric, Zinger, Caster, Rice etc.
Symptoms of damage
 Leavesbecome folded or rolled longitudinally.
 Complete defoliation.
LIFE CYCLE
Management
A spray with carbaryl (0.1%) or dimethoate
(0.05%) may be undertaken when the severe
infestation.
Spray the following dissolved in 1 lit of water,
Bavisitin 2g +Mancozeb 2g + Teefol 1 ml.
