Albert Einstein

Many people call Albert Einstein the greatest scientist of all time. He is most
famous for his theory of relativity. Albert Einstein discovered that when an object
moves, it become shorted and heavier. He also realized that time flows more
slowly for a moving object. But you can’t notice these changes unless the object is
moving thousands of miles a second! The theory that explains these effects is
called the theory of relativity. It takes many years to study to fully understand the
theory of relativity.
Albert Einstein was born on March 14th 1879, in the small town of Ulm, Germany.
His father, Hermann Einstein, was a businessman. His mother, Pauline Koch
Einstein, loved music and was a fine pianist. Both parents were Jewish and also
proud Germans.
When Albert was one year old, his family moved to Munich a much bigger
German city. His sister, Maria, nicknamed Maja, was born there in 1881.
Albert’s parents worried a great deal about their son. As an infant and a toddler,
he looked odd. His head seemed too large for his body. He was also very shy and
quiet. Most of the time he played by himself. Albert did not speak until he was
about three years old. Some say that his first words were, “the soup is too hot.”
When asked why he did not speak before, it is said that he replied.  Up to now
everything has been fine.” One time Albert’s mother asked him to play with his
sister, Maja. Albert thought she was some sort of toy. He asked, “Yes, but where
are its wheels?”
Speech continued to be a problem while Albert was growing up. When asked a
question, he often mumbled the words to himself a few times. Then he thought a
while giving an answer. His slow way of speaking mad some people think that he
was not very smart.

When Albert was 5 years old his father gave him a compass. Albert founded that
the compass was very amazing. No matter how he twisted or turn it, the needle
always pointed north! The compass raised lots of questions for Albert.

When Albert was 6 years old, Albert’s mother bought Albert a violin. She also
hired a music teacher to give him lessons. At first, Albert was not too happy to
have to practice every day. But soon he came to love the violin. Albert began to
enjoy practicing. Albert played duets with his mother.
After that, Albert entered a catholic elementary school. He didn’t enjoy it at all.
The other boys teased him because he was the only Jewish child in the class.
Some did not like him because he would not play sports. Also, his teachers
thought he was rude because he asked too many questions.

At home, his parents gave Albert books to read. They urged him to ask questions.
Eager to learn more, Albert taught himself advanced math. He also tried to
understand the world better.

When Albert was fifteen, his father moved the family to Milan, Italy, where he
stared a new business. Albert stayed in Munich to finish high school. Albert was
lonely and very unhappy. He did not like the way he was being taught. He had to
memorize facts, repeat them back and was not allowed to ask questions. While he
got high marks at math and science, he did not do well in other subjects.

Only after only one term, he quitted school to join his family in Italy. He also made
two important decisions: He would give up his German citizenship, and he would
finish high school in a different country.

Einstein finally graduated from high school at Switzerland, Which was just across
the border from his parents’ home in Italy. After graduation, he applied to a
college, the Swiss Federal Polytechnic Institute. He failed the first entrance exam.
But he tried again the next year, he passed this time.

In 1903, he met a classmate from college, Mileva Maric, and married her but
officially divorced from her on February 14th, 1919. He married his distant cousin
Elsa Lowenthal on June 2nd on the same year. He had 3 children in total, Lieserl,
Hans Albert and Eduard.

His accomplishments:

-He discovered the theory of relativity, Ec2, which he was most famous for.

-He accepted an honorary degree from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania

- In 1921 He received a Nobel Prize for Physics.

-After his death, they named the 99th element, a metallic synthetic element
‘einsteinium’ in honor of Einstein

Sometime after he gained US citizenship, he was barred (meaning that he wasn’t

allowed in the US at all) from initiating the idea of the atom bomb, some people
say.

Albert Einstein died on April 18th, 1955. He was diagnosed with something in his
stomach a couple of years before his death. It was an aneurysm in his stomach
which ruptured and caused internal bleeding which caused his death. When he
was asked if he wanted surgery, he refused- because he didn’t want to prolong
life artificially.

After his death, his brain was removed from his body and preserved so scientists
and historians can see how he was such a mathematical and physic genius by
looking in his brain and other scientific purposes.

So, after reading this biography, do you really think that Albert Einstein is the
greatest mathematician of the century?

OPINIONS: Emilija, Juli and myself

Juli’s Opinion: He helped people in the world of math, but he made math a lot
more complicated, complex and confusing.

My Opinion: He discovered the theory of E= mc2 and I think that he helped

people with math and science and helped inventors of many scientific things.
