Movie Review

‘The Platform’ is a breath-taking sci-fi Spanish movie starring Iván Massagué as Goreng and directed
by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. Released on 6th September 2019, the movie has an IMDb score of 7 and is
whooping 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The plot is set in a dystopian future. It shows a vertical pit, which had 333 levels and a vertical
moving food platform across the levels. Two people were randomly assigned to a new level every
month and the food platform, which was filled at the level 0 by high-class cooks, carried the left-over
food from one level to another. But one cannot keep any food with him and he can only eat as much
as he can for the small period of time the platform stops at his level. Thus, everyone at the top level
tried to eat to their full stomach and that at the lower level didn’t even get any food. The situation
worsens as the level increases, where people were even found to kill their partner and live on their
flesh. But the topmost people were least bothered about the situation down there.

Goreng along with some other prime characters tried to change the system by allowing everyone to
eat only the amount they needed to survive, and pass on the remaining to the lower levels. As this
system would ensure the survival of everyone.

The movie clearly captures the current state of the capitalistic society where the rich bureaucrats try
to take as much as they can from the society and forbid to help the poor. And the people of lower
levels are unable to do anything even after wanting to change the system. It also talks about another
kind of people who sacrifices their life in order to change the system like Goreng did. The movie also
demonstrates the corruption and racism that prevails in society.

The acting and direction need a special mention. The majority of the movie was shot between four
walls but every shot will give a great viewing experience.

On the downside, the film contains some degree of cruel and disturbing scenes, which might not be
appropriate for weak-hearted people or kids.

Overall, ‘The Platform’ is a out of the box thriller which delivers a strong social message. Anyone
with a Netflix account should give it a shot.
