Brief discussion:
Matter can be classified into two groups; the pure substances and the mixtures.
Pure substance – or simply substance, is a type of matter that has a fixed composition and a
definite set of properties. It is always homogenous which means, it has only one phase.
Example: pure water
Mixture – a type of matter with no definite properties. It is made up of two or more kinds of pure
substances, each of which retains its own characteristic properties.
Example: Halo halo
Example:
Compound – is a pure substance that consists of two or more elements that are chemically
combined in a fixed portion.
Example: Carbon Dioxide, it has one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.
Types of Compound
1. Organic Compound – also called as carbon compounds, are substances that contain the
element carbon.
Example:
Methane CH4
Ethyl alcohol C2H6O11
Glucose C6H12O6
Types of Mixture
1. Homogeneous Mixture – are mixtures that you can only observe one phase/state of matter. It
is also called as solution.
Example: Juice, coffee drink and softdrinks
2. Heterogeneous Mixture – are mixtures that you can observe two or more phases/states of
matter. It is also called as suspension.
Example: Halo-halo, gravel, sand and fruit salad.
