came to seek and to save what was lost.”  Why did Jesus came?
- To seek and save which was lost.
INTERPRETATION:

1. What was the significance of Jesus being in Jericho?

- Jericho was the area of assignment of Zaccheus and Jesus happened to pass through.

2. What is a chief tax collector?

- The head of all tax collectors

3. Zacchaeus, in all his efforts of trying to figure out who this Jesus was, climbed a sycamore tree. Note that
in Luke 15:1 tax collectors and “sinners”gathered around him to listen so it is really possible that
Zacchaeus, being the head, already heard by the word of mouth about Jesus. .

4. Zacchaues, climbing a tree implies that he really had a great interest for Jesus. He even did not care
what the people might say of him, holding a position and with such great wealth would climb a tree for
a man known as the friend of tax collectors.

5. Jesus called Zacchaeus BY HIS NAME! What a day! Jesus knows him!

6. Zacchaues obeyed to the Lord when he was told to come down. And He wasn’t coming down with
grumbling, he was doing it with joy.

7. But what was the people’s reaction? They were muttering among themselves. Because in that area there
were around 10,000 priests residing to which Jesus can choose to stay. But Jesus choosing to stay in a
house where people consider as worst of all sinners plays a significant meaning to them and even to us.

8. There was a step of repentance in the life of Zacchaeus. Losing half of your property is no joke. Let’s say
Zazcchaeus has a million, giving half of it would leave him with 500,000. Minus the four times of the
amount that would be deducted from him, that would mean leaving him with if not almost nothing, but a
very small amount of money. Zacchaeus wasn’t only giving compensation, it was more than a just
compensation! Not that Zacchaeus was trying to pay for his sins, but that action was the manifestation
of his salvation. There was repentance, a change of heart and a change of mind. He doesn’t care what
will be left of him. All he ever wanted was to make things right.

Jesus declaration of Salvation to Zacchaeus summed up the purpose of why Jesus came, to seek and
save the lost. To restore what was once broken and redeem the fall of man.

The name Zacchaues means clean or pure but his life doesn’t match his identity. He lived a life of
corruption and greed, a life that is not pure in the sight of God and man. Through an encounter
with Jesus, he was able to restore that sense of identity and lived according to his name.
APPLICATION PRINCIPLES:
1. Zacchaeus showed humility. He put his self aside so he can come to know who Jesus is.
2. Salvation always comes with repentance and a new way of living. A life that is pleasing before the Lord.
3. Jesus is after the sinners, not the righteous.
4. Jesus did not meant to pass through Zacchaeus life, he was meant to stay.
5. Only those who come to him with a humble heart, shall be restored.
6. Only a true encounter with the Lord can restore our sense of identity.
