Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) Existentialist philosopher from France "Success is unimportant in the pursuit of
liberty." Existence is freedom.
Because freedom "exists as it is," man is unconditionally free. Freedom is about "making a decision," and by
choosing freedom, a person "asserts his existence and his freedom." Existence precedes essence.
"Existence is not a need," Sartre claims. Existence is merely being present... no necessary entity can explain
existence. everything is gratuitous (free)." Absolute liberty exists.
In Sartre's opinion, the limits to freedom become a hindrance only if the human being decides to accept them
as a hindrance to his freedom. However, "freedom" in Sartre's definition does not imply the ability to do
anything at all. "You are free," he adds, since the individual always has an option, so "choose." - The ability
to choose is defined as freedom. Facticity vs. Freedom For instance, if a guy decides to jump from a cliff and
fly. As a result, freedom is a decision, and with that choice comes responsibility.
EXISTENTIALISM is a philosophical movement notable for its investigation into the nature of human existence. It
is a philosophy focused with discovering one's own identity and the purpose of life via free will, choice, and
personal responsibility.
