frequency 4.5 GHz. The guide cross-sectional dimensions are 15 cm and 6 cm.

a) Calculate the number of propagating modes at the operating frequency.

velocity and group velocity.

operating frequency.
3- Design a rectangular air-filled wave guide for mono-mode transmission of the frequency
band 8.0 GHz – 12.0 GHz.

a) To include appropriate safety margins, the dimensions of the wave guide have to be
selected such that the lowest frequency of the band is 25% above the cutoff frequency of the
fundamental mode, and the highest frequency of the band is 25% lower than the cutoff
frequency of the next higher-order mode.

b) Assume next that the designed wave guide is filled with a dielectric characterized by
ε=2.56 ε0 and µ=µ0. Determine all the modes propagating in the wave guide and list the
corresponding cutoff frequencies.

c) The wave guide in (a) will be used for the propagation of a modulated narrow-band signal
of bandwidth 20 MHz. If the modulation frequency is the center frequency of the operating
band of the waveguide, calculate the time delay for the propagation of the signal over a
distance of 10 m.
3- The lowest three cut-off frequencies of a rectangular waveguide are TE10 (3 GHz) ,
TE 01 (4 GHz) , and TE 20 (6 GHz) .
a) How many modes may propagate at 5 GHz?

3 modes ( TE10 , TE 01 , and TE11 )

b) Now assume the waveguide is filled with a dielectric with εr = 9 . What are the cutoff
frequencies for the TE10 , TE 01 , and TE 20 modes?

c) Assume for this part that the width in the x-direction is 2 m and the height in the y-
direction is 1 m. write all the field components for the TE 34 modes in terms of the constants
E 0x , E 0y , E 0z , H 0x , H 0x , H 0x and kz be sure to indicate any fields which are zero.
5- An air-dielectric L-band rectangular waveguide has a/b =2 and a dominant-mode cutoff
frequency of 0.908 GHz. If the measured wavelength is 40 cm, find the operating frequency,
guide dimensions and the phase constant.
