Provisional Cast-on

Casting on
1) Using waste yarn, make a slip knot and place it onto the crochet hook.
2) Hold the hook in front of the needle, take the yarn up behind the needle.
3) Pull yarn through the loop on the hook – one stitch formed. Take yarn behind the needle ready to work the next stitch. Repeat
from step 2 until you have cast on all the stitches needed.
4) When you have the right number of stitches on your knitting needle, pull the remaining loop on the hook so that it becomes extra
large. Break the waste yarn and tie a knot in the loop to prevent the stitches unravelling.

Removing the cast-on

Gently untie the knot you made in the loop of waste yarn, and slowly pull the loop out. As you pull each crochet loop out, carefully transfer
each live stitch onto the spare working needle.

Panel Map
Below is the chart map for the panel – you will work the panel a total of 8 times. On the final panel omit the final
row as that will be replaced by the graft.

The stitch counts are included to help you keep track of the short rows more easily – the stitch counts do not
include the short row stitches.

Garter stitch is worked throughout, and the direction of work is indicated as an additional aid to keeping track.

These instructions have been carefully engineered to provide a balanced fabric – i.e. it has the same amount of
rows throughout the body (brim and crown shaping have been incorporated) and the fabric will lay correctly. Any
adjustments or amendments to the placement of the short rows may cause the fabric to distort.

The panel starts on the wrong side of the work, with an odd numbered row, working from crown to brim; brim to
crown rows are even numbered rows, with the right side of the work facing.

Short Rows - GSR
Product no. WW319KToph

1) Work the number of stitches specified in the pattern, and you will then perform the short row on the next stitch. Knit the short row
stitch. With this method this stitch, known as the 'double stitch', is the same as the stitch that would be wrapped in the wrap and
turn method.
2) Turn your work, so that the short row stitch is the first stitch on the left hand needle.
3) Slip this stitch to the right hand needle (this action can also be performed before you turn the work).
4) Take your yarn up and across the back, and pull it very tightly – you will then see two 'legs' of the short row stitch on the needle.
What you have done here is stretch the stitch underneath the short row stitch right around the needle.
5) Continue pulling the yarn until the 'legs' wrap all the way around the needle, and the yarn is in the correct place to work a knit
stitch. It's important to maintain the tightness of this manoeuvre before knitting back across the stitches to the end of the row.

Working across the short row

Knit as instructed until you reach your first short row stitch then insert your needle under both legs of the double stitch – you will knit these
together. Continue to do this with all the short row stitches. Similarly, when grafting across German short rows you treat each double stitch
as one stitch, and in this way, it's a much easier method than the traditional wrap and turn.

Kitchener Stitch for Garter Stitch

Grafting stitches together using Kitchener Stitch joins two sets of live stitches with no noticeable seam. When we graft, we work first on the
front needle and then on the back needle. It's quite important to remember to stop after working stitch 4 of the repeat should you need to
have a break or tighten up the slack, so that you can start again at a convenient point. To start, align both sets of stitches holding the needles
parallel, with the right sides of the work facing outwards.

Ridge High
To start your graft, perform steps 3 & 5 to create your selvedge stitches. Then repeat steps 2 to 5 until you have 2 stitches remaining. To
finish your graft, perform steps 2 & 4 then finish work as directed.
1) Prepare your needles and stitches as shown – RS front needle has the ridges high (next to the needle) and RS back needle is ridge
low (WS has ridges next to the needle)
2) Stitch 1, front needle - insert the needle knitwise, pull yarn through then slip stitch off the needle.
3) Stitch 2, front needle - insert the needle purlwise, pull yarn through but leave stitch on the needle.
4) Stitch 3, back needle - insert the needle knitwise, pull yarn through then slip stitch off the needle.
5) Stitch 4, back needle - insert the needle purlwise, pull yarn through but leave stitch on the needle

Ridge Low
Ridge low garter grafting is the opposite of ridge high. To perform ridge low Garter Stitch Kitchener, either simply turn the work inside out
and perform ridge high Garter Stitch Kitchener as described above, before turning work outside in, or reverse the steps above – i.e prepare
your needles with front needle RS ridge low, and back needle RS ridge high and work purlwise, off, knitwise on both needles.
