UNIT SUMMARY

Communication is a process that involves parts which are the source, message,
channel, receiver, feedback, and context. Communication is successful when one
observes the principles of communication as well as ethics in communication.

The increasing worldwide integration of humanity today requires us to embrace

diversity; thus, you have to recognize and value differences such as age, gender,
race, ethnicity, ability, religion, education, marital status, sexual orientation, and
income. Miscommunication can arise due to cultural differences. The first step
towards multicultural communication is awareness to these differences.

The right use of language in a particular context contributes to successful

communication. The term, language register, refers to that variety of language that is
appropriate in specific situations. The use of language is determined by our audience,
the topic, the purpose and location. Register may be static, formal, consultative,
casual, and intimate.

There will be opportunities for you to write and to speak for an audience in school, in
the workplace, or in any other contexts. Visual images help the reader read and
understand texts and the information from the visual can support reading and help
make meaning of text.

The concept of visual literacy makes use of multimodal texts. Multimodal, proposed
by Kress and Jewitt in 2003, refers to the integration of different modes of text to
create meaning and to convey messages.

Presentation media can become an important feature of your speeches. In this case,
audiences appreciate speakers who use technological and symbolic resources
creatively. You can use presentation media to attract and connect with audience
members, spark their imagination, make and demonstrate your creativity.
Presentation media include overhead transparency, flip chart and poster, white board
and chalk board, document camera, video, handout, model, audio media, digital
slides, and real-time web access.
