The best country to live

It turns out that Switzerland is the best country in the world for expatriate
workers for 2019, according to the latest HSBC Expat Explorer report. The Swiss
nation jumped up the rankings from 8th place last year. Thanks to the low crime
rate, good pay, fast career progression, and stunning beauty – the Alpine
country has knocked Singapore off its perch as the world’s top nation for
expatriates.

This is the first time in 5 years that Singapore was not ranked in the first place.
The Southeast Asian city-state moved down to second, Canada was third, Spain
fourth, and New Zealand fifth.

The annual survey gathered data from 18,059 expatriate workers in 163
destinations. The study breaks the findings into three sub-categories: living,
career opportunity, and family life. The top ten of the “best countries to live and
work for expatriates” was rounded out in order by Australia, Turkey, Germany,
United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

The Rodriguez Brothers Circus is in town! Every year, the circus arrives and stays for a week. Then they go to the next town. There are
not many animals in the circus. People told the circus that they didn't like seeing animals performing. There is an elephant called Jacob
and two old lions, Hattie and Meg. Most of the performers are human! There is Leopold, “The Strongest Man In The World”. His father
also worked in the circus, but Leopold is stronger than his, because he has bigger arms and bigger legs too! Leopold performs his act
every night for the town's people who come to watch. Another performer is Clara. She says she has the longest hair in the world. It's
about 4 metres long! She also has a daughter who works in the circus. Her name is Sue-Ellen. Her hair is a lot shorter, but she wants to
grow it as long as her mother's. Sue-Ellen helps look after the animals and she's also learning how to juggle. The highlight of the circus
are the three clowns, Pit, Pot and Pat. They all wear long red shoes, but Pat's shoes are the longest and sometimes, he falls over
because they're so long! They perform for about twenty minutes and they are always the most popular act with the audience, especially
the children. Many people think Pit, Pot and Pat are three brothers, but Pat is older than the other two - he's their father! He's the
oldest clown in the country, but he has a lot of energy. Tomorrow will be the most long day because the circus is leaving town and
everything must be packed away into big trucks.
“PROMISES”
WARM-UP Which was the most difficult promise that you had to make? Why?

READING AND SPEAKING Read the text and answer the questions below.

After almost getting divorced, this man

wants to reaffirm his love.
The day we met was the first time in my life that I thought I would have a heart attack.
Your beauty was stunning, but your overall presence was too much for me to handle.

1. I promise to put you first. When we said, “I do,” there were vows I made to you. I
promised to put you first, but the truth is I haven’t. I reaffirm my promise, but this time
I will follow through. I will put your needs above my own. I will give you first place in
my heart and life. As long as you love me, you’ll be the only one.

2. I promise to remember I’m the problem. A wise counselor told us that if you have a
problem with your spouse, the problem is with yourself. I know this but have made it
seem like you’re the problem. Instead of making a big deal about things that won’t
matter in the grand scheme of things, I’ll work through my issues on my own. They
aren’t major and aren’t important.

3. I promise never to cheat on you. Some days are not nearly as difficult to live as the
days without you.

4. I promise to communicate.

5. I promise NEVER to get physical with you. You are precious and delicate, and the one
thing I can’t live without. I promise never to get physical with you. I’m not talking about
hitting, I promise to never make a gesture towards you in anger. I promise to have a
better way to deal with my temper.

6. I promise not to be jealous or controlling.

7. I promise to choose love every day. Over these last 16 years, we have learned first
hand that love isn’t a feeling. It’s a decision. I promise to choose love every day. I will
ignore my feelings, which come and go. I will choose to wake up each day and honor the
commitment I made.

1 What other ways do we have to express comparison? Check the text and find examples.

2 Which of these seven promises do you think is the most difficult to accomplish?
When you want to say something is similar, use ‘as – as’.
For example, “She’s as tall as her brother” or “It’s as nice
today as it was yesterday.”

When you want to say one thing is less than another,

you can either use ‘less than’ or ‘not as – as’.
For example, “This programme is less interesting than I
thought” or “This programme is not as interesting as I
thought.”
You can use “a lot”, “much”, “a little”, “slightly” and “far”
before “more / less than”:
“She’s a lot more intelligent than him.”
“This car is much faster than the other one.”
“They are much less wealthy than they used to be.”
“He’s a little taller than his sister.”
“She’s slightly less interested in football than him.
“We are far more involved in charity than they are.”

You can use “almost as … as”, “not quite as … as”, “(not)

nearly as … as”, “nowhere near as … as”, “twice as … as”
and “half as … as” to change the extent of the similarity.

“She’s almost as good as you!”

“He’s not quite as confident as Susie.”
“I’m not nearly as intelligent as her!”
“This painting is nowhere near as famous as the first.”
“She’s twice as old as him!
“He’s half as interesting as you!”

1. Why was it difficult for the Japanese

2. What do you understand by

3. How was J-Mac story so inspiring for
people?
4. Can you find examples of –ed
adjectives in the text? Point them
out.

Everyone has a favorite sports movie. Whether its Miracle, Brian's Song or Rudy, Hollywood
has taken some of the most inspirational stories in sports and adapted them into feature
films. But keeping up with the world of sports is no easy task. And though we can't blame
Hollywood for this, there are many amazing sports stories out there that deserve a shot on
the big screen.

It may be a bit soon for fans in the U.S., but Japan's victory in the 2011 women's World Cup
was much more than just a soccer game. Just four months prior, northern Japan was hit by a
devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami that killed over 15,000 people. As the
death toll continued to rise, Japan's women fought with heavy hearts through the opening
rounds of the World Cup Final and ultimately stunned a heavily favored United States team
in the championship game. A story of tragedy and resilience, Japan's 2011 Women's World
Cup Championship would make for a fantastic movie. People were really inspired by this
story.

Perhaps the No. 1 feel-good story of recent memory is that of Jason "J-Mac" McElwain. Born
with autism, McElwain had a passion for basketball and became the manager of the Greece
Athena High School basketball team. On the last game of his senior year, head coach Jim
Johnson surprised McElwain with a jersey, allowing him to join the team on the bench and
perhaps even play a few minutes. With about four minutes left and Greece Athena sitting on
a comfortable lead, coach Johnson called for J-Mac. Though he missed his first two shots,
McElwain didn't miss again, nailing six three pointers and another deep jumper to total 20
quick points. When the final buzzer sounded, fans rushed the court in a heartwarming
moment that seems destined for bright lights. J-Mac has been a motivated boy since then.

HARD-WORKING DETERMINED AMAZING

As the reactions to “Selma” and “American Sniper” suggest, movies often still have the
power to provoke national debate. Do they also have the power to affect our view of
government? A recent study by Michelle C. Pautz, an associate professor of political science
at the University of Dayton, suggests films can act as an influence. Dr. Pautz asked
undergraduates at a private Midwestern college to fill out a questionnaire regarding their
views on government before and after viewing the movies “Argo” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”
She found that after watching the films, 20 to 25 percent of the participants changed their
opinion — and generally more favorably — on a variety of questions about the government.
Their trust in government increased, for example, as did their general optimism about the
direction of the country. Both films portray the government as “lackluster” at best, Dr. Pautz
writes, yet they still offer two central characters — Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck) in “Argo”
and Maya (Jessica Chastain) in “Zero Dark Thirty” — who are “______________ and
___________________.” Dr. Pautz believes young viewers may be especially open to the influence
of movies. “Younger people, particularly teens, are much more likely to be impacted than
older adults because they are still developing and shaping their worldviews,” she said in an
email interview. “Since they are still being socialized politically, they are more likely to
absorb all sorts of influences, including influences from film.” But it is difficult to say, she
added, “whether that influence lasts years, decades, or a lifetime” — yet “the influence of
movies along with other factors may be quite substantial.” For Dr. Pautz, movies “can be a
great mechanism for conversation and reflection.” They can also “help us understand
societal opinions, help us understand institutions, and even demystify aspects of society.”
“But we have to take a step back first and assess what we’re seeing,” she added. “We should
stop and think, Are these images of cops indicative of reality? Or are most government
employees this inept? While film affords us all an ____________________________ form of
entertainment — and one that I really enjoy — we have to stop and think that there’s more
to it than just entertainment, there are all sorts of messages being conveyed.”

“NEVER TOO LATE”
WARM-UP When did you graduate from high school? When do you think you will graduate from university?

READING AND SPEAKING Read the text below and answer the questions below.

Going back to school is a big decision. You're aware of

the benefits of earning a degree, but you're hesitant
about the road to graduation. How will you squeeze
classes, assignments and studying into your already
busy life? Do you have what it takes to succeed in the
classroom? It's normal to be apprehensive. But don't
let your doubts stand in between you and your
dreams. We connected with students from various
backgrounds to show that success comes in many
shapes and sizes. See how they overcame their
obstacles to earn their degrees. If they can do it, so can
you!
1 Why do some people abandon school?
Navigating college life while fresh out of high school
can be a challenge, especially at a large university. 2 Why should they return?
When you add the responsibilities of being a parent to
3 Is it too late if you are an adult to return
that challenge, it is easy to see how some might
struggle. Nursing student Krystl Taylor learned all to school? Why not?
about that experience when she first enrolled in 4 How can we cope with the problems of
college. “I was one of the few students married with
kids,” Taylor says. “I felt kind of alone because there older students in school?
weren’t a lot of students that could relate to my life.” 5 How does Taylor’s story inspire you?
Taylor eventually left the larger state school for
Rasmussen College, where the flexibility of online
classes eased the logistical issues that come with
raising a family and attending school. The staff has also
gone above and beyond to provide her with the one-
on-one support that was lacking at her previous
school—one instructor even provided her with a walk
through of a subject late on a Saturday night. Taylor
graduated in 2014, thanks in part to that support. The
significance in graduating isn’t just the degree, but the
example she has set for her children. “I want my kids
to know the importance of getting an education and
chasing their dreams and goals,” Taylor says.
1 Using adjectives

Adjectives appear after the noun in some

fixed expressions.

The Princess Royal is visiting Oxford today.

The President elect made a speech last night.

He received a court martial the following

week.

2 Types of adjectives

The adjectives involved, present & concerned

can appear either before or after the noun
that they modify, but with a different
meaning depending on the placement.

I want to see the people involved. This

means I want to see the people who have
something to do with this matter.

It was an involved discussion. This means. The

discussion was detailed & complex.

TASK

Write about an article describing your school or university. Why chose it? Try to use as many
adjectives as possible. Take this as an example:

“My school is maybe not the best one in the city but it is definitely the best place where I can be. It
is not far from home, it takes me only 20 minutes to get there. Other schools are more
sophisticated but I don’t like that. My school is simpler but amazing because…”
