Notebook Writing: Movie Trailer Analysis

Task:
Choose ONE of the recent movie trailers below, and write a brief analysis of the audience and context for this trailer.
The links to each of the corresponding trailers are present in the classwork tab of Google Drive.
● Bill & Ted Face the Music
● The Suicide Squad
● Top Gun 2: Maverick
● Luca
● As I Am ← highlight the one you will be writing about

Process:
After viewing the trailer, consider first who the anticipated audience of this film will be. What are some details you
noticed that support your interpretation of the audience? Then reflect on what context is necessary to understand
and appreciate the film. What is the audience expected to already know? Finally, describe your own reaction to the
trailer you viewed. Did you feel like part of the intended audience? What details connected (or did not connect)
with you? Write your analysis in complete sentences.

The intended audience of the film is young kids because it is an animated film and because of the themes of
acceptance, friendship, honesty and love which appeals more to younger children. Before watching the movie,
the audience should already know that Luca is a sea monster from another world just below the water's surface
and that he transforms into a human when he is on the surface but returns back to his monster form when he
comes into contact with water. He disobeys his parents in pursuit of his dreams. Despite them warning Luca not
to go above the surface, he continuously defies his well-meaning parents. Also, there are some untranslated
italians. When I watched the trailer, my reaction was “hmmm, interesting, a sea monster that can transform into
a human goes on an adventure in the human realm. I feel like I am not part of the intended audience because
adolescents usually prefer action movies with a more serious plot instead of coming of age animated films. I
liked the idea of a sea monster embarking on an adventure in the human realm but there does not seem to be
much action. In general, the plot is intended for children which means it does not fit the preferences of
adolescents.
