BASIC LEADERSHIP

MODULE OVERVIEW: NESCEL

Leaders can be defined as one’s ability to influence and motivate others to bring the best out in them. It focuses
on encouraging individuals to add more to the overall effectiveness of an organization. Also, it is often defined as
a process wherein an individual influences and encourages others to achieve the organizational objectives and
directs the organization so that it becomes more coherent and cohesive to work.

Moreover, a person who can bring out the change is the one who possesses the ability to be a leader. Leadership
is all about developing people, in turn helping them to reach their maximum potential. In the simplest of terms,
leadership is an art of motivating the people to help achieve a common goal.

In this module, we will be learning all about LEADERSHIP. To be specific, in thai module, the student is expected
to learn the following:
1. Definition of leadership
2. Different types and behavior of a leader
3. Traits and qualities of a leader, and
4. Servant leadership and its principles.

WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? - ALLYZA


This is a process of giving control, guidance, headship, direction and governance. It is synonymous with the basic
principles of management.
It only means that leadership is an act of leading a group, a position of being a leader this was according to
Google.
● Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective or task, or sway
their decision and opinions
● Leadership also means to direct the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent; or
to influence a group of individuals to reach a common goal.

And according to Microsoft Encarta 2006, leadership has three roles:


1. As a guide- leader assumes the role as the director, organizer, mentor and adviser
2. As a frontrunner- leader can be a spearhead, leading light, trailblazer and groundbreaker.
3. As a head- leader can be called chief, manager, superior, principal boss and supervisor.

LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS: KYSHA & JEDAVELL

1. AUTHORITARIAN LEADER- leads men by means of the RANK POSITION. A self-centered type of leader
who believes that he/she is the only one capable of directing his/her subordinates.

2. PATERNALISTIC LEADER- by always setting an example. This leader manifests an example. This leader
manifests an example of a father who seems to look after the welfare of his children.
3. PARTICIPATIVE LEADER- makes the men participate actively in the activity or task in the organization
but reserves the right to make the final decisions on critical matters.
4. LAISSEZ-FAIRE LEADER- leaves decision making to the subordinates. He will give assignment then it is
up for the subordinates to accomplish the task in whatever manner they can.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP- A leader who humbled himself to serve his disciples especially when he performed the
“washing of the feet” symbolizes humility and humbleness of Christ. ATE KAKAY

1. LISTENING- seeks to listen receptively to what is being said.
2. HEALING- the potential for healing one’s self and others whereby many people have broken spirits and
have suffered from a variety of emotional hurt.
3. PERSUASION- give primary reliance on persuasion rather than positional authority in making decisions
within an organization.
4. STEWARDSHIP- prioritize the needs of others and emphasizes the use of openness and persuasion
rather than control.
5. CONCEPTUALIZATION- the ability to look for a problem and think beyond day-to-day realities with
sensible and functional ideas.
6. EMPATHY- understand and empathize with others.
7. AWARENESS- aids in understanding issues that involve ethics and values and view most situation from
a more integrated and holistic position.
8. FORESIGHT- enables the leader to understand the lessons and events from the past, the realities and
phenomena of the present and decision impact in future.
9. BUILDING COMMUNITY- true community can be created among those who work in businesses and
other institutions.
10. COMMITMENT TO THE GROWTH OF PEOPLE- people have concrete contributions as workers, thereby,
servant leaders are committed to the growth of each individual.

GOOD LEADERSHIP TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS NESCELL, HANNA, CATHERINE, DIANA

1. COMMUNICATION- being able to express openly and build empathy with others is the foundation of
effective leadership.
2. INTEGRITY- it is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. You can’t expect your followers to
be honest when you lack.

3. EMPATHY- being open-minded to understand the followers’ motivations, dreams, and problems so that
they can forge a deep personal connection.
4. ACCOUNTABILITY- a good leader takes little more than his share of the blame and little less than his
share of credit. Thus, a good leader is accountable for the team’s result. May it be good or bad.
5. HUMILITY- a great leadership styles focus on problem-solving and team dynamics much more than
self-promotion.
6. VISION- good leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision and relentlessly
drive it to completion.
7. RESILIENCE- the true grit of a leader is not how they perform during good times, but how they roll up
their sleeves and produce when times get difficult.
8. INFLUENCE- leadership and influence are not interchangeable and respect has to be earned, not given.
With your good leadership style, it may influence your followers and do better.
9. POSITIVITY- inspire their team not based on their own goals or outcomes, but on their exhibited
behavior, life outlook, and attitude in any given situation.
10. DELEGATION- are accustomed to doing all the work themselves and struggle to let others handle
responsibilities on their own. Great leaders must elevate their team. They must be more essential and
less involved.
11. CONFIDENCE- are the ones that don’t just talk about problems but come up with their own solutions
fearlessly.
