CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

CoVid-19 has struck the entire world by surprise. Originating from China, this virus has left a

trace in all aspects of life like businesses, personal endeavors, and even education. Most schools have

switched from traditional learning to online learning to lessen the spread and to help stop this

pandemic. Specifically, Medical Education has taken its respective actions in regards to the situation.

The adjustments have been crucial because students and even faculty who work in the field of Medical

Education know how many factors there are to consider in learning and teaching in this matter.

This research has been conducted in order to know the advantages and disadvantages of

switching from traditional learning to online learning in the field of Medical Education. Medical

students of Ateneo de Zamboanga University have been given the focus in this study since these

courses are the starting point for the future career fields we’ll be linking in. According to The Study

of Usage of Online Learning Resources in Medical Courses (2018), “Virtual study techniques and

virtual patients can play a crucial role in medical education. Hence, the present study was undertaken

to understand the extent to which online resources are used by medical graduates in their learning and

how this can be further boosted. The study confirmed the need to integrate information technology

into traditional methods of teaching for better learning outcomes.”

 Independent variable (Medical Courses) – Medical Courses are courses that are inclined to

offer various specializations including medical and biomedical sciences, pharmacy, allied

health, fitness, and many more. Those who take up these courses are most likely to get job

opportunities from hospitals and private clinics in the healthcare sector.

 Dependent variable (Perceptions of Medical Students) – According to Oxford Languages,

Perception is a way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental

impression. In this research, we’ll be utilizing the thoughts of Medical students of Ateneo de

Zamboanga University where most future medical education-aligned students are.

The title revolves mostly around the impacts or the effects of online learning on medical courses

in general. It is for the researchers to fully understand the pros and cons, as well as the effects of

switching from traditional learning to online learning. According to Joshua Stern Ph.D., “online

learning is education that takes place on the internet and is often referred to as e-learning.”

According to Alfaisal University, they planned to know the effect the infection has made on their

education system, explicitly, in clinical courses. 62% of the respondents favored the conventional

methods of learning rather than the utilization of media. This drives us to the end that maybe, the

reasons for these reactions are the absence of information in gadgets utilized, trouble in overseeing

time, absence of devices, the nervousness and stress the media is giving, and some are pandemic-

related issues. Notwithstanding these encounters and the conditions, a few understudies considered

this to be a surprisingly positive turn of events as some of them acquired certainty and were more open

to learning all alone.

In a study that was conducted by a large Midwestern medical school in the United States, the

committee of state-wide course directors writes a licensure board-style final examination that is

referenced to the core and used at all campuses. In order to identify whether students who train using

web-based quizzes score differently as a group on this state-wide examination than students who do

not utilize the materials online for exam preparation. The study included 71 learners from two different

campuses who were taught by the same instructor and were admitted to medical school with similar

exemplary credentials. The significant difference in final examination outcome indicates that online

preparation for high-stakes examinations could improve student performance in medical courses. The

study that was conducted shows that online learning is effective when it comes to preparation for

medical course examinations. Online learning increases the flexibility and inter-activeness of a student
due to the fact that online learning enables a student to be an independent learner in which students

can also improve their comprehension and logical thinking during the process of acquiring knowledge.

According to a study written in Alfaisal University, Saudi Arabia entitled “Challenges to Online

Medical Education during the COVID-19 Pandemic”, there have been numerous challenges that

students and faculty in the field of Medical Education face up to today. This includes issues relating

to communication, pandemic-related anxiety or stress, technophobia, and online experience. In line

with the survey they have also conducted, the results have shown that most of the respondents still

prefer blending online and face-to-face instruction so that the teaching will become more effective.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Learning online at Ateneo De Zamboanga University is on the rise. Even some of the most popular

institutions in the world integrate distance learning into campus-based programs, helping to make this

revolutionary modern learning mode part of the mainstream in taking medical courses. For most

medical students, the fact that training is changing online is probably a disappointment. But new

educational innovations are proving to be capable of solving many medical training problems. Students

do not see e-learning as a replacement for conventional instructor-led teaching, but as a supplement to

it, as part of a blended-learning approach. For students in the middle of the core clinical clerkships, in

particular, that may be the case, the period during which students are granted their most important

exposure to patients.

Online learning offers unique opportunities to communicate with both peers and professors,

whether it be through video conferences or through discussion boards. Such possibilities are helpful in

compensating for the effect that physical and social distance can have on feeling alienated. A higher

education program that can be obtained in about four years is a bachelor's degree. Many bachelor

programs are offered both in-person and online so that even students living in remote areas or unable
to attend full-time school can advance their education. Those who study medicine should expect to

learn details about the human body and develop a realistic understanding of heaven as well. While an

individual learning style may be influenced by each particular dimension, it is likely that learning styles

are based on a combination of these dimensions. A learning style, for instance, might include elements

of extroversion, sensation, feeling, and perception as dimensions of personality. To create the basis for

more dialogue, two of the more common learning theories will be emphasized: behaviorism and

cognitivism by Paccino’s theory that is also relevant in the field of medical courses. At Ateneo de

Zamboanga University, several other learning ideas that are essential for online education in the field

of medical courses will also be considered.

 Behaviourism

Behaviourism focuses on how people respond or behave, as the name suggests. Action induces a

reaction in simple terms. Behaviourism in Extension Education explores how medical students respond

as a result of an educational intervention.

 Cognitivist

Instead of changes in the probability of response, learning is equated with discrete changes between

states of information. Cognitive theories focus on the conceptualization of the learning processes of

students and discuss the problems of how the mind receives, organizes, stores, and retrieves

information.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

There is a finite amount of time for medical students to obtain a working knowledge of an

immense amount of data. While online education offers an opportunity for self-study, how to offer

practical lessons is the primary challenge facing online education in veterinary medical science. Since

most topics are realistic, it is also not easy to learn online. However, due to the absence of any means
or resources due to the economic and digital divide, many students have little access to online teaching.

Students claim that only with the online education system is it difficult to achieve veterinary

competencies. This uses online teaching platforms also allowing students to digest information in their

own time but also allows students to then constructively discuss this material with peers. It has also

been shown to be effective in terms of achieving learning outcomes.

Factors in Online Learning that can affect Medical Students

1. Loss of interest.

2. No internet availability.

3. Cost of the Internet provider or data.

4. No availability of the necessary learning devices.

5. Shortness of time.

6. Lack of application in clinical learnings.

7. Lack of online information in certain aspects and/or subjects.

8. Difficulty in teaching.

9. No interaction.

10. Prolonged time spent online causing the students to lack motivation.

11. No availability of online resources.

12. Prone to wrong information.

13. Lacking in communication.

14. Students may experience some surge of depression due to this factors.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Since it is the first time for the entire world to be facing a pandemic as bad as this, the

adjustment period must still be taken into consideration. The instantaneous modifications in the aspects

of education we have been experiencing aren’t permanent and are still subject to improvement. Being
in this time and era, people have to be more flexible in terms of adjusting to survive. Medical Education

may be an entirely different topic because it involves challenging tasks and a demanding workload,

but it’ll surely be easier with the help of today’s technology.

It is preferable to acquire knowledge by experiencing it, one of the challenges to online learning

medical education is the lack of practical activities which is a relevant factor for medical education.

Skill cannot be acquired by studying with modules and listening to your professor through a zoom

meeting. It is also a burden for professors and instructors to teach medical courses without physical

interaction with the learners, due to these factors online learning is inefficient for medical education.

According to a survey of 1,289 student and faculty members, there were 208 responses 66.8% were

medical students as stated by the result of the survey the reported challenges to online medical

education included issues related to communication (59%) student assessment (57.5%). Due to these

factors, online learning is inefficient for medical education (H, M, & K, 2020).

The entirety of this research can conceivably help future scientists and/or researchers

contemplating the comparable case as ours in providing information, data, and potential solutions to

the main problem, and this study is also covered with dependable sources. This likewise can help our

proposed subjects, the Medical Students, in discovering arrangements in their battles as of the new

normal as this exploration expresses plenty of potential solutions and methods for dealing with stress

and other struggles that may profit them.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This Research study would like to explore and discuss the following questions;

1. What are the factors that can affect the online learning of Medical students?

2. How will this research contribute to those factors?

3. What are the effective ways to cope with these factors?

4. What are the key factors for making an online medical course effective?

5. How will this study contribute to future researchers studying a similar issue?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of the study towards the society, particularly in Zamboanga City is, to let the

people in our city see/be able to read about online learning affecting medical students and also to

showcase the positive side of online classes amidst this situation we are facing right now. And for

those people who are worrying about online learning, especially in the field of medicine. The research

that we conducted was to inform everyone that it can still be possible to teach medicine even through

online learning.

The given data would help the institution of Ateneo de Zamboanga University to improve on

their very own educational strategy and approaches during this pandemic since they are offering

Medical Courses as well. It is also for the institution to know the thoughts of their students under

medical courses in regards to the online learning we have today.

It's rewarding and enjoyable to develop new talents, but the learning process can be difficult.

Students will somehow be inspired and driven by this data by taking medical courses at Ateneo De

Zamboanga University via STEM. Innovation taught at Ateneo De Zamboanga University is especially

relevant for students because education plays a critical role in building a sustainable future.

This research may one day prove to be useful for future researchers that may utilize our work

for reference purposes for this to give an adequate measure of data and might help fill the holes in the

connected subject they may pick later on.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers will utilize qualitative strategies wherein the researchers will produce a set of

well-structured questionnaires through a google form in order to gather data. Since we are facing a

pandemic, we have access to different survey forms online in which respondents will be able to give

their answers. The main objective of this research is to know whether the online mode of learning is

effective for those who take up medical courses and what steps or actions the institution of Ateneo de

Zamboanga University should take in order to improve the quality of education they provide amidst

the pandemic.

SAMPLING METHOD

The respondents of this research will be random students from several medical courses,

specifically in different academic organizations of Ateneo de Zamboanga University – SHS. The type

of sampling method that the researchers will be utilizing is purposive sampling because the title

revolves around the respondents’ own experiences during the online classes that lead to knowing the

advantages and disadvantages of being a medical student at this time.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study will be conducted in our respective homes by using electronic gadgets and

software to access Google Forms, Messenger, and Gmail. This research study will only be conducted

during the school year 2020-2022 wherein only those who are undertaking Medical-related courses

are then subjected to be the respondents of this research.

The researchers will possibly face challenges like unavailability of respondents, power and

internet interruption, technical problems, and compiled tasks of other subjects and unexpected

matters.

LOCALE

Due to the pandemic, the research will be conducted based on the comforts of their home

although the data collection will necessarily be based mainly in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University

– SHS Campus. The survey forms will be done through the help of google forms online, and by the

researchers personally messaging those random students to participate in the survey.

RESPONDENTS

The respondents for this research study are the random Medical-related course students of the

Ateneo de Zamboanga University wherein they will be the focal point of the research in knowing the

effects of the online mode of learning on medical courses.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE AND INSTRUMENTS

For this study, the researchers will prepare a survey questionnaire wherein since we’re facing

a pandemic, all of the necessary data will be collected online. After preparing several questions that

will be used as a guide to having the desired data, these questions will then be placed in input for a

certain google form specialized for the survey.

Unlike the old times, we need to adjust to today’s era in a pandemic in which as much as

possible, we must rely on our gadgets to become paperless and to avoid contact with other people.

Therefore, google forms are the most accessible and easiest way for us to gather data for our research

study.
CHAPTER 4
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This study aims to gather the perceptions of Medical Students in terms of the sudden change of the

Academic Learning Technique, to learn about its advantages and so as the disadvantages. This chapter

focuses on the gathered data and results after the research survey has been concluded. Our research

survey entitled “Perceptions on the Impact of Online Learning on Medical Courses of Medical Students

of AdZU” received a total of 30 responses mostly coming from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s

Bachelor of Science in nursing students. In this chapter, we highlight the different struggles our

respondents have been experiencing since the change of the Learning technique and some methods

they use in order to overcome these challenges.

Research Questions

1. What are the factors that can affect the online learning of the Medical students?

Medical students require a great deal of practice and actual demonstration to further explore and

understand their field, especially those who lack resources and lack the appropriate materials and/or

tools needed in certain practices. As well as the constant power and internet interruptions that affects

all students. Medical Students are in a field wherein lengthy lectures are being discussed and having a

minimal amount of time causes the Students to get overwhelmed and unfocused.
‘’Others’’ includes the students who view the online classes as their struggle and would rather have

face to face classes, and those who face problems in communicating with Professors.

2. How will this research contribute to those factors?

 This research aims to provide light in the struggles of our Medical Students with this new mode of

learning. This is also to show how they get through it and make the best out of every session despite

the difficulties. Lastly, this research aims to provide information and additional strategies for the

School Administration on how to improve their approach to this new mode of learning.

3. What are the effective ways to cope with these factors?

 Being at home while studying has greatly limited the Students’ resources and the best way to cope

with the difficulties mentioned is to learn from each other, if not independently. The internet also has

a huge variety of topics and video demonstrations that can help the students gather more practice.

4. What are the key factors for making an online medical course effective?

 Online learning is already a struggle as it is. Having the subject thoroughly explained, demonstrated

whilst having new and creative ways to keep the Students engaged and interactive as the lecture
progresses would be a great help in making a medical course effective. As per every Student should

also have the proper time management including sleeping schedules, and also the appropriate diet in

order to stay active and participative during discussions.

The data above answers the Question ‘’on what aspect should the AdZU College Unit improve the

online learning set up?’’. None represents the students who are satisfied with the new set up and would

rather not change anything, Teaching Strategies implies that CI’s should stay in schedule, have a proper

material distribution, and stable communication. Schedules f2f Classes are the students who deem it

necessary to have scheduled f2f classes once in a while. Lastly, others are the students who think that

moderators should have the appropriate and more useful and upgraded apps in order for them to learn

more. These data helps answer the research question above in terms of giving a glimpse of what

students deem ideal in other for them to learn online and make the new mode of learning more

effective.

5. How will this study contribute to future researchers studying the similar issue?

 Part of the reason why we conducted this research is to hopefully help future researchers in ways

where we dive into the struggles and ails of the Medical students and provide background on their

study, equipped with the What, Where, How, and other questions that might follow.
Study Boundaries

Lack of previous research studies regarding this topic is one of many limitations we had while

conducting this study. We also did struggle to find the right participants and segregate their responses

in order to gather and make further analysis. This study is limited to the respondents’ experience in

this new mode of learning, particularly what they deem as an advantage, disadvantage, their ways to

cope, and suggestions to further improve the School’s strategy in this matter.
CHAPTER 5
INTRODUCTION

The main objective of this study is to determine the effects of online learning on medical students

and to let the readers know how online learning affects medical students. Below is the summary

of the data gathered; conclusion made by the researchers and a few recommendations to resolve

the main problem of the study as well as some advices for future researchers.

SUMMARY

1. What are the factors that can affect the online learning of medical students?

Medical students require actual practice and demonstration to explore and fully understand their

field. There are students who lack resources and appropriate materials and/or tools needed in

practice. As well as constant power outages and slow internet and data connection.

2. How will this research contribute to those factors?

This research aims to provide information and additional strategies for the school administration

on how to improve their approach in this new mode of learning.

3. What are the effective ways to cope with these factors?

Students can assist one another in coping with obstacles by learning from one another and the

internet. The internet contains a vast array of topics and video examples that might assist pupils in

gaining additional practice.

4. What are the key factors for making an online medical course effective?

Online learning is difficult since students must engage and interact throughout the length of a

medical course. In order to stay active and engaged during discussions, every student should have

proper time management, including sleeping routines, as well as proper meals.

5. How will this study contribute to future researchers studying similar issues?

We conducted this research to hopefully help future researchers, provide background on their

study, equipped with the What, Where, How, and other questions that might follow. (Ito yung sa

provide the summary of the results yung sa pic sinend ko yung

It is critical that we understand how online learning might affect medical students, such as how

they will obtain correct knowledge and experience, as it is essential to medical courses. According

to the data collected, power outages, shortage of materials for online learning, lack of time, and

difficulties interacting with professors are some of the factors that impacted medical students.

Understanding how the research can contribute to the issue is critical, as our research intends to

provide information and additional suggestions for school administrators on how to enhance their

approach to this new style of learning in order to make online learning effective.

Identifying efficient ways to cope with the factors mentioned is necessary in order to provide

solutions, such as assisting one another in coping with the challenges through learning from one

another and the internet. Topics on the internet and video examples can be extremely beneficial to

students.

Determining the key factors that contribute to the effectiveness of an online medical course can

assist both the school and the students in having a far more efficient education system, factors such

as keeping the students active and engaged throughout the discussion by having physical and

mentally healthy students.

It is necessary that we grasp how this study contributes to future researchers exploring similar

issues in order to potentially help future researchers provide background on their studies that may

help improve the current educational system.

The collected data from the respondents regarding the impacts of online learning on medical

students are all almost similar. It was observed from their responses that most of their concerns

are; they experience a power outage and slow internet connections, and most of them prefer face-

to-face class to perform actual practices and demonstrations and some are good with this learning

setup. Tools used in analyzing the gathered data were; Google Forms.

DISCUSSION

In the midst of the epidemic, we conducted research for future medical students at ADZU. The

majority of the participants are encountering difficulties as a result of the new normal's

impediments, such as a loss of internet connectivity and a shortage of resources. The participants'

techniques of coping during this pandemic are to work together and learn from one another, to use

the internet to obtain knowledge, to manage their time appropriately, including sleeping habits and

suitable meals. However, studying in a medical profession over the internet is impractical or

impossible due to the lack of physical interaction. Covering up is really tough for the participants.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings, the recommendations below are hereby addressed to those included in the

significance of the study:

1. The researchers recommend that the school administrators find ways on how the Ateneo

de Zamboanga University may successfully and slowly implement pilot face-to-face

classes for certain subjects that are in desperate need of an actual setting.

2. The researchers recommend that the mode of learning should be more convenient and

accessible to at least 95% of the school’s population of medical students to somehow make

the learning of the students effective.

3. The researchers recommend that future researchers should increase the number of

respondents so that they may garner more accurate and reliable data.

4. The researchers recommend that future researchers must come up with shorter and concise

questions in order to minimize the consumed time of the respondents.
