CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The entire world was shaken by the sudden outbreak of Coronavirus or Covid-19. It

was deemed as Pandemic by the World Health Organization. This situation challenged

the worldwide education system and compelled educators to shift overnight to an

online style of teaching. More than 1.5 billion students and youth across the planet are

or have been affected by school and university closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic

(UNESCO, 2020). For decades, schools and colleges have not experienced this degree of

turmoil, but we have the opportunity to continue education even when schools close,

unlike at any point in the past. It’s crucial that learning continues in this unpredictable

environment, even if it can't happen in person. Many academic institutions that were

previously unable to alter their conventional pedagogical method had no choice but to

move entirely to online teaching-learning. E-learning is associated with multiple

arguments. Some of the reasons relevant to online pedagogy are accessibility,

affordability, flexibility, learning pedagogy, life-long learning, and policy. The online

learning mode is said to be easily accessible and can even enter rural and remote areas.

Another fascinating feature of online learning is flexibility; a learner may prepare or

schedule their time to complete courses available online. Blended learning and flipped

classrooms result from the combination of face-to-face lectures with technology; this
type of learning atmosphere will improve the students' learning ability. Students can

learn at anytime and anywhere, thereby gaining new skills that contribute to lifelong

learning in the process. In this dynamic environment , the government also recognizes

the growing significance of online learning. During Academic Online learning, students

can access all internet resources. Access to the internet is fundamental because it can

improve the quality of education in many ways. It opens doors to a wealth of

information, knowledge, and educational resources, increasing learning opportunities

in the classroom and beyond. For the creation of a knowledge society, access to the

Internet, with ample bandwidth, is necessary. However, a number of variables impede

total achievement of these gains. First and foremost among these is lack of access. And

others have slow internet connection. The existence of COVID-19 will change education

explicitly and permanently in the future, since we need to be able to adjust to working

and learning online for all sorts of purposes and circumstances.

Statement of the Problem

This study, will investigate the impact of Internet resources on the Academic

Online Learning of the Nursing Students’ in SPUD, and aim to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the impact of online resources or social media to the nursing students of

St. Paul University?

2. In what ways does it affect the students' learning abilities?

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of internet resources on the

academic online learning of nursing student's in St. Paul University Dumaguete.

Hypothesis

H : The Internet Resources have a positive impact on the Academic Online Learning of
0

the Nursing students of St. Paul University Dumaguete.

Significance of the Study

This study is designed to discover the impact of internet resources on the Academic

Online Learning of the Nursing students in St. Paul University. The researchers will aim

to dig deeper on different insights of the students on the topic. The result of this study

would benefit the following groups:

Nursing Students: The students from the Nursing Department will benefit from this

research for them to be aware of the impact that Internet resources have brought on the

Academic Online Learning.

Nursing Instructors: The Nursing Instructors of St. Paul University Dumaguete will

benefit from this research as it provides information. The teachers are able to

understand the students point of view during the Academic Online Learning.

Future Researchers: The future researchers can benefit from this project. Future

researchers can use this study as a reference into making their own research. Also,

future researchers who aim to further the cause of this study can use this to their

advantage and improve this study in any way possible.

Scope and Delimitation

The research paper will only be limited to the study of the impact of internet resources

on the Academic Online Learning of the Nursing students in St. Paul University. It does

not include the entire nursing students population. It is limited to only a handful

number of students within the department, 5 students from each section.  The results of

the study may not be applicable to other grade levels and/or Departments. This study

will only tackle the impact of internet resources on Academic Online learning. The

researchers will conduct an online survey. The researchers will only analyze and

interpret the data gathered from each representative of each section. The paper

disregards the social status, health condition, and general well-being of the students.

Rather, the research paper solely focuses on the impact of internet resources on the

Academic Online Learning of the students.

Definition of Terms

The following terminologies are commonly used in the different chapters in this

research paper. They are operationally defined for this study.

Academic Online Learning. Since the spread of Coronavirus, the education learning

system around the world has changed. From face to face class, it changes into online

learning. Academic Online learning is the one used by most of the students in the world

right now.
Nursing Students. This group of students are the ones taking up Nursing in St. Paul

University Dumaguete. In this research, they are the respondents that are expected to

give their honest answers from the questionnaires given to them to find out the impact

of internet resources during their Academic Online Learning.

Internet Resources. These are the materials you find online. In this research, these

resources are the ones being used by the respondents during Academic Online

Learning.
