Chemical Engineering Design Project Guide for student

Preface

The main aim of this short guide is to introduce design project to Chemical
Engineering students in simplified, flexible and practical writing way. The contents of
this guide concentrate on basic concepts and principles of the art of writing only. It
shows the way to students to start and finish graduation project. I avoid the scientific
details of design that the students already learn in the classrooms. I hope that this guide
used for fourth year chemical engineering students at their first steps in final year
project. I avoided the complex theoretical details and explanations; I just deal with art of
writing and formatting.

1. Introduction

Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that applies physical

sciences (physics and chemistry), life sciences (microbiology and biochemistry),

together with applied mathematics and economics to produce, transform, transport,

and properly use chemicals, materials and energy. A chemical engineer designs large-

scale processes that convert chemicals, raw materials, living cells, microorganisms and

energy into useful forms and products. Chemical engineers are involved in many

aspects of plant design and operation, including safety and hazard assessments, process

design and analysis, control engineering, chemical reaction engineering, construction

specification and operating instructions.

Design for mass and material production is one of the things that make engineering

different from science. Chemical engineers design both products and processes. The

design on a large-scale process plant is one of most important industrial things that

chemical engineers have to perform. The aim is to design a plant that is technically

feasible, safe, environmentally acceptable and as economical as possible within the

given project constraints. The Design Project is the summary of the chemical

engineering study; the student will apply the basic principles of material and energy

balance, thermodynamics, chemistry, heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid flow, economics,

etc., in the project.

2. How to start

Chemical engineering final year project can be started and finished through several

steps. The most important one is the first step that can be summarized in suggesting of

Project name, literature survey, types of process and optimum methods, physical and

chemical properties, material and energy balance, equipment design, Economic

considerations, etc. All these information have to be collected from text books and

references. Figure 1 below shows schematic steps for project design.

Physical and chemical Physical and chemical

4 properties properties of all raw, reactants
and products must be
determined and tabulated

examples of flow sheet)

This is very important in the next steps

Material and Energy Depending on production capacity,

7 balance Material and Energy balance can be
done for each equipment and for
overall process

Equipment Design
Some of major equipment must be

Economic and project costs must be

Economic and cost
evaluated for each equipment and

Project location, feasibility and

Site location and environmental considerations must
11 safety be estimated

Here, the student must mention the

Conclusion and most important results and
12 recommendations suggestions for future work
