 Multicultural goal: Develop an educational environment that promotes respect for

 Me at a Glance- worksheet
 My Friends at a Glance - Worksheet

3. Instruction- Learning Process

 Do First: (5 minutes.) As a class define what the words ‘same’ and ‘different’ mean, list
synonyms for each word. (Synonyms for Same: alike, matching, identical, similar.
Synonyms for Different: unalike, not the same, unique, uncommon)
 Mini-lesson: (15 minutes) Listen to Read Aloud, “The Same but Different” by Karl
Newson, using Visual Thinking Strategies (I see, I think, I wonder), use a couple images
and discuss what is the same and what is different about the characters in the book.
 Guided Practice:(10 minutes) On the whiteboard, as a class discussion: What makes our
class the same as other classes at school? What makes us different from other classes at
the school?
 Independent Practice:(20 min.) Instruct the student they will be working on an “Me at a
Glance” Page, this is where they will draw a picture of themselves and list their
characteristics and some favorite items, (favorite color, food, subject in school, activity to
do). They have 10 minutes to complete this worksheet. Then they will be given another
10 minutes to walk around the classroom and find things they have in common and are
different about their classmates. They will complete “My Friends at a Glance” individual
worksheet.
 Exit Slip:(5 minutes) Discuss what they found that they had the same as other students
and what they had different than other students. Note that just because they had
differences doesn’t mean they did anything bad. Differences are good and they make us
unique.

4. All Resources: List all resources used in the multicultural lesson plan in APA format.

Evaluate the level of student engagement in the teaching-learning process.
There are multiple class discussions happening during the lesson. This gives students
multiple opportunities to participate in the learning process. While class discussions are
happening the teacher can also be gauging understanding.
List the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson plan.
Strengths of this lesson are that it gives students the ability to see their peers as individuals and
not just a being in class. It gives them more of an understanding of their classmates.
Some weaknesses of this lesson could be that the workload is a lot for the allotted time. The
lesson may run over in time.
