STS Quiz #4

1. According to your own personal belief how can someone achieve "human
flourishing" and what should someone do once they already achieved human
flourishing?
- For me, I believe one can achieve this “human flourishing” when he put a
purposive and rational effort to attain self-actualization and fulfillment. When a
person believes in himself and choose decisions in life that would make him
happy, contented, relaxed I believe that person can reach human flourishing. Once
a person already achieved human flourishing, I believe he should be responsible
in all his choices in life. He should be doing good works for others for it is the
person’s most important fulfillment in life. He should do works that would help
not only himself but the whole community as well to achieve inner and outer
peace.
2. What role does science and technology play in human flourishing?
- Science and technology changes us and it plays an important part in achieving
human flourishing in countless ways. It eases our labor, cures diseases, provides
abundant food and clean water, enables communication and travel across the
globe, and expands our knowledge of the natural world which we all know helps
people to achieve human flourishing. Science and technology really plays an
important factor in achieving human flourishing for it has the things and
knowledge that people need in order to achieve human flourishing in some ways.
3. Compare and contrast the verification theory and the falsification theory. How
important are these theories in the field of science?
- Verification theory proposes that a discipline is science if it can be confirmed or
interpreted in the event of an alternative hypothesis being accepted. This theory
gives value to experience and only takes into account those results which are
measurable and experiments which are repeatable. On the other hand, falsification
theory asserts that as long as an ideology is not proven to be false and can best
explain a phenomenon over alternative theories, we should accept the said
ideology. These theories are very much important in the field of science
especially that science must be reliable and should not be a source of err.
Everything must be proven, measurable, and have evidence in order for it to be
accepted in science. Testability is a crucial starting point around which to design
solid experiments that have a chance of telling us something useful about the
phenomena in question. If a falsifiable theory or verifiable theory is tested and the
results are significant, then it can become accepted as a scientific truth.
4. Is our reverence of science justified? Explain.
- I’d say maybe; a respect is a more appropriate word to be used in this case. I have
a respect of science and for me it’s not fully justified. No matter how far we
develop everything in our lives in the understanding of the methods, theories and
mechanisms that are found in the discoveries of science there will forever be a
question on our minds that is beyond our ability to comprehend. I know many
would say that science have done the best of the bests, miracles and wonders for
the world but I always tend to think that science has also been used to create some
of the most terrible things decent people won’t think of making such as the
nuclear bomb and various weapons that have caused misery for many decades.
5. Human have always been in constant search for development and many global
projects and campaigns goal is for further development in the way they live their
lives, the economy and for our society as a whole and growth is the indicator of
development, while technology is the instrument humans uses to achieve this goal
this but in return we are subjecting our environment into irreversible damage due
to the harvesting resources in a rapid pace that nature cannot recuperate. Is it
possible to achieve our goals without inflicting severe problems in the environment.
Explain.
- If our main goal in life is for the development in how we live while using
technology as an important instrument for it, I would say that it’s impossible to
achieve our goals without inflicting severe problems in the environment.
According to the documentary of Leonardo Dicaprio entitled: Before the Flood,
“We are reaching the Earth’s limits and we cannot do anything to stop damaging
our environment especially that we really need technologies to live our lives
better, only by controlling on how we consume and produce our natural resources
can we mitigate the effects of living at the period of Earth’s limits.” This is really
true. Humans have been in constant touch with technologies and it’s so hard for
us right now to live without technologies because our lives mainly depend on
electricity, gas, papers and etc., which we all know these things use technologies
that damage our environment by taking up all its natural resources such as non-
renewable energies.
