Explain: writing is more effective than military power or violence

- Intro
- Op: The pen is mightier, tho there are times when the use of force is needed.

- The pen: a personnel or public opinion

- The pen: press, literature, newspapers, books, …
- => connect one’s mind with another => to accept/take up the view that the
writer holds on to a particular/specific subject
- The reader may not be convinced of the writer’s opinion => the pen stands for
peaceful means => the reader is persuaded, not forced.
- No force is used to force the reader to accept
- But a good writer can affect many, incept, implant ideas with his persuasive
and forceful ways of writing

- Sword: stands for force => forces views on people

- If they don’t accept they will and must be challenged
- => the sword implies force, not reasons
- It can be seen that the pen is more preferable.
- => however the sword has its own uses
- The world is full of evil, bad, wicked, dishonest, unreasonable, mean,
malevolent, malicious, immoral people => they are impervious to reasons,
arguments and eloquence => the force must be used
- Where the arguments fail, the violence succeeds.
- It does not mean that the use of the sword is desirable
- =>>>>>> usually (more often than not) the sword has been misused
- History: Kings and lords hold power and inflicted it on the people (dominate,
oppress, rule, control, dictate…)
-

-
- All thoughtful men, consequently, prefer the pen to the sword.
- Governments are assisted by the press to exist
- Who has more writing/persuading/reasoning power rules
- all people believe more in the pen than in the sword

- Conclusion: both have their own uses => a mixture is necessary
Essay:
There is a famous saying: The pen is mightier than the sword. This means that writing is
more effective than military power or violence. In my perspective, albeit the saying is true,
but there are times that the use of force is needed, and in combination, the pen and the
sword make up a great measure.
The pen, which stands for personnel or public opinion, is composed of the press, literature,
newspapers and other forms of writing. The aim of the pen is to connect one’s mind with
another, in order to take up the view that the writer holds on to a particular subject. The
readers have the free will whether to take up that view or not. Therefore, we can say that
they are persuaded, not forced. It is the one and only purpose of the pen. Nevertheless, a
good writer with convincing and forceful ways of writing can move many people’s
viewpoints and be able to use words to implant the readers with the opinions that he
holds.
The sword, on the other hand, stands for force and violence. It only uses force to denote
views. Whoever does not accept them, will and must definitely be challenged. Therefore,
the sword only implies force, not reasons. It can be inferred that the use of argument is
more preferable. But the sword, just like the pen, has its own uses. The world is full of
dishonest, wicked, evil and immoral people; they are impervious to eloquence, reasons and
arguments hence, force must be applied. Moreover, where the arguments fail, the violence
succeeds. However, it does not mean that the use of force is desirable. Throughout the
history, more often more than not the sword has been misused. Kings, and lords held
power and inflicted it on the people in order to dictate and oppress them. If a good man is
given a sword, he is bound to use it to do something evil.
All thoughtful man will, consequently, prefer the pen to the sword. Inarguably, the ruler is
the one with great power of persuasiveness. At this junction, I believe that most people
place their trust on the pen, not the sword. They always prefer peace to war, and violence
and force are the last things that they will ever, in their whole life, think of.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that, again, the pen is mightier than the sword but at times
the use of the sword is inevitable. The only great measure that not only fits in to any
society or people’s beliefs but also moral is the utility of both the pen and sword; we use
the pen to make peace but if it fails, we know that the sword will help us finish it.
