Assignment on Overhead Insulators

1) A string of four suspension insulators is connected across 285 Kv line. The self
capacitance of each unit is equal to 5 times pin-to-earth capacitance. Calculate (i) the
potential difference across each unit (ii) efficiency of the string
2) A three phase overhead transmission line is supported on 4 disc suspension insulators.
The voltages across the second and third discs are 13.2 kV and 18 kV respectively.
Calculate the line voltage and mention the nearest standard voltage.
3) In a string of 3 suspension insulators, capacitances may be represented as shown in Fig.
Find the voltage (as percentage of total) across each disc and the string efficiency. Given
C’ = 0.1 C and C1= 0.05 C. C1 = Capacitance due to guard ring

4) Each of the three insulators forming a string has a self-capacitance of C farad. The shunt
capacitance of each insulator is 0.25 C to earth and 0.15 C to line. A guard ring increases
the capacitance of line of metal link of lowest insulator to 0.35 C. Calculate the string
efficiency of arrangement with guard ring.

5) A string of 6 suspension insulators is to be fitted with a guard ring. The pin-to-earth

capacitances are all equal to C. What should be the values of line-to-pin capacitances so
as to have uniform voltage distribution over the string?
