B: Sure. You can call or book on their website. It gets busy

A: OK. Thanks for the tip!

2. Buying a Bike
A: I’m thinking of buying my own bike. But should I buy a road bike
or a mountain bike?
B: It depends. Will you be biking mainly on paved roads or on mountain trails?
A: Mostly on paved roads.
B: A road bike would be more suitable then. What’s your budget?
A: $700 to $800.
B: You should be able to get a decent bike for that price. A big factor in a bike’s
price is the material that the bike frame is made of. Aluminum frames are
cheaper and heavier, while carbon fiber frames are lighter but more expensive.
A: OK. What else should I pay attention to?
B: Your height and weight will determine the size of the bike frame you need.
It’s best to go to a bike shop and try out the bikes.

Dear Readers,
There is a saying, “Good things come in small packages.” Do you believe that?
It certainly isn’t true all the time, but in the case of miniature art it is! In our
magazine this month, you’ll learn about artists who can create tiny masterpieces.
These masterpieces are as amazing as they are small!
Our world is full of amazing things, most of which are not small. Think about a tall
skyscraper, such as Taipei 101. It’s built very well out of concrete and steel, but did
you know that builders are now using wood to create skyscrapers? These building
are called plyscrapers. If you’re curious, you can learn more about them in our
magazine this month!
Being curious is a good thing. It usually means you are interested in a lot of things
and want to know more about them. I am interested in many things, so I read
about many different topics. Many successful people are curious. Learn more about
curiosity this month, too.
The world is full of interesting people, places and things and so is Studio Classroom!
We hope you enjoy learning about them in English this month!

Deep Think Think thoroughly through the topic. Discuss the

questions and brainstorm the answers with others!

Topic: Curiosity
The dictionary defines curiosity as a strong desire to know or learn something. This month, the article
“Intellectual Curiosity: The Healthy Appetite of a Hungry Mind” (p. 14) shows us the importance of staying
curious. We can see this theme throughout several other articles this month as well!
Curiosity about science and the way the world works is important for innovation and finding new
solutions. Two great examples of this are “Vertical Farming: Taking Food Production in a Different
Direction” (p. 22) and “Plyscrapers” (p. 48). William Kamkwamba’s thirst for knowledge led him to
solve a problem in his village by harnessing the wind (“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” p. 46). Social
curiosity helps us empathize and learn about the way other people think. There’s no better app for learning
from others than Clubhouse (“Join the Club,” p. 26)!
Last but not least, curiosity is essential for language learners. When you are willing to ask the question
“why?” you gain valuable insight about how English works and why it works the way it does. Are you
allowing yourself to wonder? Maybe it’s time to get more curious so that your English can improve even
more!

Discussion Questions
1. Do you consider yourself to be a curious person?

2. What is a topic you’ve always been curious about? Why?

3. How can being more curious about English help you improve?

Deep Think Words of the Month:

innovation (n) – a new method, idea or product
thirst for knowledge (phrase) – curiosity that motivates learning and study
empathize (v) – to understand and share the feelings of someone else
wonder (v) – to desire to know something; to feel curious

Notice of Fare Increase and Bus Schedule Changes

Due to budget cuts and reduction of routes in sparsely populated areas, the City of Inecton’s Department of
Transportation will be making the following changes to the city’s bus services. The effective date of these
changes will be Sept. 1, 2021.

Fare Increase
Cash fares on all bus routes will increase by $0.25, from $2.25 to $2.50. Student tickets will increase by $0.10, from
$1.40 to $1.50. Ticket prices for passengers under 12 and over 65 will remain the same at $0.75. Transit Passes will
also be increasing from $95 to $105 per month.

Bus Schedule Changes

Service Reductions: The service for Bus #45 (Airport to Downtown) and Bus #18 (San Peters to Aracade Mall) will
be limited to noon until 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. The frequency of the service will be changed from every 12
minutes to every 15 minutes.

Service Changes: Changes will be made to the routes of Bus #6 (Downtown to Orange Park) and Bus #85
(Downtown to Orchard Church). The new last northbound bus will leave downtown at 10:05 p.m., and the
new last southbound bus will leave the respective stations at 10:02 p.m.

Schedule Change: To help with the traffic flow due to the school dismissal times of both Renege High and Alltie
Elementary, Bus #73 will change its eastbound trip to operate 10 minutes later. The bus will leave Renege High
at 2:45, 2:56, 3:05 and 3:16 p.m.

Subject: Bus Fare Increases and Schedule Changes
Date: Aug. 5, 2021

To Whom It May Concern:

To say that we are upset would be an understatement. We are incredibly displeased by the increase in fares and
the changes on many of the bus routes we rely on. As commuters who have been major promoters of using
public transportation, and as taxpayers who are footing the bill for bus service, we are furious that you have
decided to charge so much more per ride and have decreased service as well!

Public transportation is essential in our city, and raising costs to ride will be a huge detriment to our city as
fewer people will be able to afford it. There are many side effects to this and we’re wondering if you even
considered the impact your changes will make.

We hope that you will rethink these changes, especially the fare hikes, and ensure that our city doesn’t follow
that of others where cars become the main mode of transportation.

Miniature Art
