these payments. It will also help avoid any financial crisis. Even if you do face a financial problem,
you can deal with it early and avoid undue stress.
There are three steps to prepare for your budget. First, calculate all the money you can in earn
in a month. Net, figure out all expenses. Finally, compare your expenses with you earnings, Do

THE STORY OF THE MOBILE PHONE NOVEL

A few years ago a 19 year –old Japanese girl started writing a novel about her life in a
small town. She finished it in just three weeks and gave it the title Dreams Come
True. Akiko wasn’t an experienced writer and didn’t expect anyone to be interested
in her tale. Yet when it came out a few months later, the romantic novel was a great
success. It sold over 200,000 copies.

It’s an incredible story. The most amazing thing about it, though, is the fact that
Akiko wrote the novel on her mobile phone! As she wrote, she posted it, chapter by
chapter, on a website where readers could download it immediately. She worked on
it whenever she could – mostly while she was relaxing at home. She didn’t think too
much about the story and she didn’t rewrite anything!

Akiko was one of the first of a new generation of novelists in Japan who wrote novels
as if they are writing a text message. They write in a simple, chatty style and use lots
of abbreviations and `emoticons’. They know how to tell a good story, but they don’t
worry too much about grammar and spelling.

Some people were critical of mobile phone novels at first. They thought they were a
bad influence on teenage girls, who preferred them to `proper’ literature. However,
they are now popular with people of all ages. Many of the best-selling paperback
books in Japan were originally mobile phone novels!

(A) State whether the following sentences are YES or NO. If the answer is NO,
correct the statement.

1. Was Dreams Come True about true experiences? YES / NO

2. Did readers like Dreams Come True? YES / NO

3. Did the author write the novel on her computer? YES / NO

4. Is the language in a mobile phone novel always correct? YES / NO

34
B ) Use dictionary to look up the definitions of the following words.

1. incredible
2. chatty
3. abbreviations
4. experienced

C) Correct the errors in the following sentences :

1. Junita reading a storybook right now.

2. They are do their homework at the library now.

3. I watching a movie, so please be quiet!

Writing
A) Rearrange the sentences below to form a talk entitle `How to Help Ourselves
When We Are Bullied.’

Firstly, hold your anger.

Next, never respond by getting physical.
I hope the talk has been useful. Thank you.
You should never try to kick, hit or fight back as you can never be sure
what the bully will do.
Good morning, the principal, teachers and friends. I am here today to
give a talk on how we can help ourselves when we are bullied.
Finally, act brave and ignore the bully.
You should look the bully In the eye and walk away as this will send the
message that you do not care. Sooner or later the bully will get bored
trying to bother you.
It is natural to get upset when you are bullied, but this is what the bully
is aiming for. So, getting angry will make the situation worse.

ILHAM’S HOLIDAY IN LANGKAWI

2534, Jalan Merpati,

Taman Guru,
15100 Kota Bharu,
Kelantan.
14th February 2016

Dear Alistair,

How are you getting on? I hope life is treating you well. It was wonderful reading
your letter about your trip to Venice. Imagine a city that has canals instead of roads! How
interesting to travel on boats instead of cars and busses! I’m sure you had a wonderful
holiday. Coming back to London must have been boring!
One of my life’s ambitions is to travel to all these places. I am hoping to further
my study overseas and maybe we can travel together to Venice, Paris, Geneva and so
on!
I spent my holidays in Langkawi Island with my family. It was my first trip there and
we travelled by a local airline, Firefly. It is a small aeroplane and I felt nervous and anxious.
The aeroplane did not fly very high so I could see all the beautiful view from up above.
Sometimes the air turbulent made me dizzy but luckily it was just for a few seconds. The
stewardess showed us where the life jackets were kept and how to use them, in case of
emergency. Fortunately, we arrived safely at Langkawi International Airport.
Langkawi is one of the most beautiful islands in the country. It is also a shoppers’
paradise, for many things are cheaper than on the mainland.
We, children, spent our week swimming, boating and travelling to the smaller islands
around Langkawi. We travelled by ferry and small boats. Father spent his entire holiday,
fishing. He caught quite a lot of fish and became very popular with the kitchen staff of our
hotel.
It was an amazing and splendid holiday for our family. One day, if you ever visit
me in Malaysia, I’ll take you to Langkawi. It is still an unspoilt island with fresh air and white
beaches. You will fall in love with Langkawi, I reckon.
I’ll stop here as I have started yawning. Tomorrow, I’ll have to get up at six to
get ready for school.
Can’t wait to have another live conversation with you via Skype! Good Bye!

Your best buddy,

Ilham

received the shirt, he was disappointed that he would have to send it back to get a refund. He no longer
wanted to risk buying clothes online again.

3 (Accept any suitable answer.)

I was surprised when I read the email. I have never bought clothes online, but I have friends who have
done so. They have had good experiences, so I was surprised by Kamal’s bad
experience. However, the email has some good points and I think that this is one of the risks of
shopping online. It makes me rethink the idea of ordering clothes online.

4 (Accept any suitable answers)

I think that online shopping is a good idea, depending on what you buy. My mother buys her
groceries by shopping online. We stay in a condominium, so she doesn’t want the hassle of
carrying the groceries up to our apartment. With online shopping, the groceries are delivered to
our doorstep. However, she never buys fresh food this way as she wants to choose the food
herself and check its quality.

Model Answer 1
The Importance of Water
Water is necessary for our survival. Seventy per cent of our body is made up of water.
We cannot live without water. In fact, if we do not drink water for a week, we cannot survive.
One of the vital facts concerning water is that even the blood in our body is made up of water.
Water helps in our digestion, hydration, defecation and overall body detoxification. We
should drink at least 3 litres of water a day. This can also prevent us from having low blood
pressure and dehydration.
Water is used for cleaning our body, washing clothes and cooking. It keeps our body,
house and surroundings clean. This is important for good personal hygiene.
Water is a useful means of transport too. For people who live on remote or small islands, this
might be the only means of transport. They have to travel by boat or ferry to the mainland.
Water is also a source of power. In the past, water was used to work certain machines like
turbines and steam engines.
Water is also used to keep trees and plants alive. All living things including man,
animals and plants, need water.

Write your article.

Model Answer 2

Attitude of Irresponsible Citizens

Recently, my family and I were on holiday in Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan. The public beach we
went to was in a deplorable state. The bridge on which visitors could stand and admire the
scenery had some planks missing. There was rubbish everywhere. I actually saw people
littering the beach by throwing plastic bags, ice cream wrappers and cans on the beach, I told
some children to pick up the rubbish they had thrown on the beach. And for this, I received
glares from their parents. It is sad to see adults allowing their children to litter and spoil our
beautiful beaches.
We have to teach our young to be proud of our country, Malaysia is a beautiful country
with lush green forests and beautiful rivers and beaches. Let us keep it that way. Beautiful!
