Week 6 Hydration Lesson Plan

Introduction (Slide 1):

● Today, we’re going to be talking about water and hydration

Why do we need water (slide 2)

● Ask why do we need water?
○ Wait a few seconds so the kids can think of an answer
Why do we need water (slide 3)
● We need water in order to survive
Why do we need water (slide 4)
● We can only go about 3 days without water
● Why?
Why do we need water (slide 5)
● Because our body is made up of about 60% water!
Sources of water (slide 6)
● Depending on our age, gender, and weight, we all need a certain amount of
water.
● Most of us need about 2 liters of water each day, including from the food we eat
and the water we drink!
● We get about 20% of the water we need from food
○ Fruits and vegetables are two types of food that provides us with a lot of
water
○ Pineapple and celery are two examples of food that have a lot of water in
them
This is about how much water we should consume daily (Slide 7):
● Most of us need to consume about 2 liters of water daily! That is equivalent to the
2 liter bottles we usually see soda in
● Remind students that the water we consume can come from foods that we eat
and also drinks that aren’t just water
● ASK: Why is drinking water so important for our health?

Why is drinking water so important? (Slide 8):

● Helps our body remove waste: Water works along with our kidneys (the organ
shown in the picture) to filter out all the waste and substances our body doesn’t
need. Without water, we would have no way of transporting out all that waste.
Why is drinking water so important? (Slide 9):
● Helps transport nutrients to our cells: Our blood, which circulates nutrients
throughout our body, is 55% water. This means that we need water for our blood
to flow through our bodies and bring the nutrients to their correct destination
Why is drinking water so important? (Slide 10):
● Maintains proper body temperature: sweat is mostly water, and allows us to cool
down on a hot day. On the other hand, if we are cold, the water in our body is
able to absorb any excess heat to keep us warm, too
Why is drinking water so important? (Slide 11):
● Improves digestion: water works with fiber (which we talked about last week) to
allow our food to run smoothly through our digestive tract

What does it mean to be dehydrated?(Slide 12):

● Dehydration is when our bodies don’t have enough water to function at their best
● When you’re dehydrated you can feel thirsty, tired, dizzy and you could even
have a headache or dry mouth
● Our bodies lose water when we sweat, use the bathroom, and even when we
breathe
● It’s important to rehydrate when we feel thirsty or dehydrated

Activity: Whoa, Slow, Go

● Sports drinks
○ Slow: they can help with rehydration if we’ve been playing or exercising for
a long time, but they also contain a lot of added sugars which we want to
avoid. So, we can have these kinds of drinks sometimes
● Skim milk
○ Go: skim milk is a good way to rehydrate because it doesn’t have a lot of
fat or added sugars in it. It also has protein and vitamins and minerals
which are very good for our bodies and our health
● Lemonade
○ Whoa: lemonade can have a lot of added sugars in it so we should only
have it once in a while
● Watermelon/cucumber/cantaloupe
○ Go: these are examples of fruits and veggies with high water content so
when we eat them, we can rehydrate without drinking anything!
○ Watermelon is 92% water
○ Cucumbers are 96% water
○ Cantaloupe is 92% water

Review (Slide 21)

● Our body is made up of a LOT of water, so it’s important to stay hydrated!
● Dehydration means our body doesn’t have enough water to function properly
● We can stay hydrated from not only drinking water but eating fruits and
vegetables too!
