EDUC 561
A Technology-Use Rationale Based on Problem Solving

Q:How to motivate and engage students?

Q:How to support students’ learning needs?
Q: How to prepare students for the future?
How to motivate and engage students?

• Gaining their attention

• Supporting manual operations during high-level learning.
• Illustrating real- world relevance
• Engaging students through production work.
• Connecting students with audiences for their writing.
• Providing support for cooperative work
How to support students’ learning needs?

• Supporting effective skill practice

• Visualizing underlying concepts in unfamiliar or abstract topics
• Studying systems in unique ways
• Giving access to unique information sources and populations
• Supplying self-paced learning for accelerated students
• Turning disabilities into capabilities
• Saving time on production tasks
• Grading and tracking student work
• Providing faster access to information sources
• Saving money on consumables.
How to prepare students for the future?

• Digital literacy
• Digital citizenship
The Partnerships for 21st Century Skills (P21)
for Students and Teachers

P21 was formed in 2002 to create a successful model of learning based

on incorporating “21st century skills into the education system ”
Figure 1.4 shows three overarching categories of student outcomes and
illustrates the support systems students and teachers will need to
achieve these skills.
21st Century Skills?

Q: What are the 21st Century 

skills?
The Partnerships for 21st Century Skills (P21)
for Students and Teachers
The ICT Competency Framework for Teachers

UNESCO personnel collaborated with Cisco, Intel, ISTE, and 

Microsoft to create the information and communication
technology (ICT) framework, which focuses on skills that
teachers require to bring about three different levels of human
capacity development: technology literacy, knowledge deepening,
and knowledge creation.

ICT is a term often used in place of the terms instructional technology 

and educational technology, especially outside the United States.

What is TIP model ?
 Technology Integration Planning model .
 Model designed for teachers, especially those new to
technology
 Helps teachers to plan for effective classroom uses
of technology.
 Helps teachers decide which best practices , strategies
and materials to use for lesson or activity that
integrates technology
 Composed of 3 phases that include 7 steps.
Analysis of Learning and Teaching Needs

Q: At which stage of teaching the 

teacher analyses the learning and
teaching needs?
As you can see, the model is broken down into three phases.
There is a total of seven steps, two in phase one , three in phase
two , and two in phase three.
What is TIP model ?

 Read Book Pages 107-108

Phase 1: Analysis of Learning and
Teaching Needs (2 Steps)
Teachers look at the learning needs of their students
to determine which strategy/method/practice they
will implement.
Step 1: Relative Advantage :
Teachers pick a strategy or method once they can see
clear and beneficial impacts, or relative advantages.
Q1: What is the problem?
Q2: Do technology-Based methods offer a solution
with sufficient relative advantage?
Phase 1: Analysis of Learning and Teaching
Needs (2 Steps)
Step 2: Tech-PACK:
It stands for technological pedagogical content knowledge.
This is how much teachers know about what they're
teaching, how they're going to teach it, and what
tools/resources they use to get the job well done.

Q1: What equipment, software, media, and materials will I

need to carry out the instructional strategies?
Q2: Do I have the technical skills I need to do this lesson?
Phase 2: Planning for Integration
(3 Steps)

Step 3: Objectives & Assessments:

Q1: What outcomes do I expect from using the new
methods?
Q2: What are the best ways of assessing these outcomes?
Step 4: Integration Strategies:
Q1: What kind of content approach is needed?
Q2: What grouping approach should I use?
Q3: How can I prepare students adequately to use
technologies?
Phase 2: Planning for Integration
Step 5: Instructional Environment:
Does the teachers environment support the integration
of technology? This includes software, devices, etc.
for all types of learners.
Q1: How should resources be arranged to support
instruction and learning? How should resources be
arranged to support instruction and learning?
Q2:What steps are required to make sure technology
resources work well?
Phase 3:Post-instruction Analysis and
Revisions (2 Steps)
The teachers continue to plan by analyzing and reviewing
lessons and activities that have been delivered.
Step 6: Analyze:
Teachers must look at what worked in a lesson and plan, design
and create ways that improve the lesson.
Q1:Were the objectives achieved?
Q2:What do students say?
Q3:Could improving instructional strategies improve results?
Q4:Could improving the environment improve results?
Q5:Have I integrated technology well?
Q6:What could be improved to make the technology integration
strategy work better?
Phase 3:Post-instruction Analysis and
Revisions

Step 7: Revisions :
Based on the results from Step 6, teachers make adjustments
to materials, logistics, and/or strategies.
