Course Overview
Introduction
The course focuses on Individual and dual sports namely Badminton and Arnis. It gives
information on the history, development, facilities and equipment’s and simple rules of the
games.
Badminton has an extremely varied repertory of strokes. This fact derives from the lightness
of the rackets, so that the wrist can be used much more than in most other tennis type games;
and even more from the peculiarities in the flight of the shuttlecock, or bird, that, because of
its feathers and light cork base, decelerates quickly after being struck. Badminton is not a
good outdoor game because breezes affect the shuttlecock. All organized tournaments are
played indoors
Arnis, sometimes referred to as Eskrima or Kali, is a martial art from the Philippines that
differs from most martial arts in that it teaches the use of weapons from the beginning. A
rattan stick is typically used, since rattan is a vine that is softer than hardwood (thus easier on
the practitioner) and it doesn't break - it gradually frays until it is no longer usable.
Sometimes Arnis is thought of as "just stick fighting", but there's more to it than that.
Historically, weapons were taught first because Filipino villagers had to be ready to fight
neighboring villages or islands on short notice, and weapons are more efficient in warfare
than empty hands.
The purpose of this course is to provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge of
strategies of individual and dual sports play, develop skills in selected individual and dual
sports, and maintain and/or improve their personal fitness

The modern form was derived from India known as “Poona”” which flourished the
city of the same name.
In England had their own version known as the “Battledore” a game involving a

Lesson 2
Nature of the game
Badminton is played as a singles or doubles game with one or two players on a side. The
objective of the game is to hit the shuttlecock or “bird” back and forth with a racket across a
net five feet high at its center. The bird should be hit with such speed and accuracy that the
opponent is unable to return the shot successfully. The game can either be fast or slow paced,
depending on the skill level of the players.
