Function and system design

Measuring principle In RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) thermometers the sensing element consists of an elec-
trical resistance with value of 100 Ω at 0°C (called Pt 100, in compliance with standard DIN EN
60751), which increases at higher temperatures according to a coefficient characteristic of the
resistor material (Platinum).

Overall design The temperature sensors Omnigrad M TR 44 and TR 45 are constituted by a measurement probe,
with (TR 45) or without (TR 44) a protection well, and a housing (head), which may contain a trans-
mitter or the terminals for the electrical connection.
In TR 45 the probe is a sensing insert, placed inside the thermowell and spring loaded on the bot-
tom of it, so as to improve the heat transfer.
The sensing element (Pt 100), like in TR 44, is positioned close to the tip of the probe.
The thermowell (TR 45) is obtained from a 9 mm diameter pipe. The final (sensing) part can be
straight, tapered, that is with diameter smoothly decreased by means of a hammering procedure,
or reduced (stepped).
For TR 44, the sheath of the probe is obtained
from a 8 mm or from a 6 mm pipe. In the case of
8 mm, the final (sensing) part is always with
reduced (stepped) diameter. In the case of 6
mm, the probe pipe is always straight.
The probe (TR 44) or thermowell (TR 45) can be
installed on the plant (pipe or vessel) by means
of a hygienic process connection, which can be
chosen among the most common types (see
d
E

section "System components"). d

Electronics
The wanted type of output signal can be obtained by choosing the right head-mounted transmit-
ter.
Endress + Hauser provides state-of-the-art transmitters (iTemp® series) built in 2-wire technology
and with 4…20 mA, HART® or Profibus-PA® output signal. All the transmitters are easily program-
mable with a personal computer, by means of the public domain software ReadWin® 2000 (for
4…20 mA and HART® transmitters) or the software Commuwin II (Profibus-PA® transmitters).
The HART® transmitters can be programmed also by means of the handheld operating module
DXR 275 (Universal HART® Communicator).
A PCP (4…20 mA) model (TMT 180) is available with enhanced accuracy, particularly advisable
for hygienic applications.
In the case of Profibus-PA® transmitters, E+H suggests the use of Profibus dedicated connectors:
the Weidmüller type (Pg 13.5 M12) is provided as standard option.
For detailed information about transmitters, please refer to the specific concerned documentation
(see TI codes at the end of this document).
If a head-mounted transmitter is not employed, the sensor probe can be connected through the
terminal block to a remote converter (i.e. DIN rail transmitter).

Lower maximum pressures can be due to the process connection (i.e. clamp, …).

Max flow velocity

The highest flow velocity tolerated by the sensor stem diminishes with increasing lengths of the
well/probe exposed to the fluid stream.

shocks, corrosion, …) of the sensors.
For a normal use, a calculation made according to MIL-HDBK-217F, gives as result a value higher
than 100 years in the case without built-in electronics, and more than 20 years with a head-
mounted transmitter (35 years with TMT 181).

Self heating Negligible when E+H transmitters are employed.

Installation
Omnigrad M TR 44 and TR 45 can be mounted on the wall of pipes or vessels.
The counterparts for the process connections and the respective gaskets or sealing rings, are
generally not supplied with the sensors, and are on the customer's responsibility (EHEDG and 3-
A® requirements must be fulfilled).
The only exception are the G1" and the Ingold connections, for which it is possible to provide the
sensor with the adapter to be welded on the plant.
Furthermore the Ingold connection and the G1" Liquiphant M type counterpart are supplied with
the necessary sealing o-rings.
As a general rule, the sensors should be installed in a manner which does not adversely affect
their cleanability.

4 Endress+Hauser
omnigrad M TR 44, TR 45

In case of ATEX certified components (transmitter, insert), please refer to the specific documen-
tation (see the code at the end of this document).
The immersion length may have an influence on the accuracy of the sensors: if it is too low, an
error might be generated in the measured temperature, due to the lower temperatures of the proc-
ess fluid near the walls, and to the heat transfer which occurs through the sensor stem.
The incidence of such error can be not negligible if the difference between the process and the
ambient temperature is big.
To avoid this source of inaccuracy, the immersion length (L) should be, if possible, at least 90÷120
mm. In pipes with little diameter, the axis line of the duct must be reached, and even slightly
exceeded, by the tip of the probe (see figure 3).
Insulation on the outer part of the sensor reduces the effect of the low immersion.
Another solution could be a tilted installation (see figure 2).
Attention should be paid in the choice of the measurement point in case of two-phase flows, which
may cause fluctuations in the detected temperature value.
For installation of the sensors in small pipes, suitable solutions are shown in figure 3.

Figure 2. General installation solutions.

In hygienic applications, a good, strict, installation rule consists in not to leave any dead spaces
along the run of the process fluid. For this aim, the flush-mounting is allowed by the connections
Varivent, G1" Liquiphant M type (+ purpose built adapter) and Ingold (+ purpose built adapter).
Also the clamp flanges can partly fulfil this requirement, if the Tri-Clamp® components 7IMPS or
TL7IWWMS (Instrument Tees) are used (see the related figure 4).

For other connection arrangements, the scheme illustrated in fig. 2 should be observed [h <=
d/2].
For weld-in connections, care should be taken by the user in the execution of the welding on the
process side (suitable weld material, welding radius > 3 mm, absence of pits, folds, crevices, …).
Purely threaded and metal-to-metal joints are dis-
couraged by some hygienic design standards (i.e.
3-A® Standard 74-01 and document 8 from EHEDG
respectively). This is the reason why E+H Tempera-
ture division doesn’t suggest those solutions in "san-
itary" applications. Moreover often metal-to-metal
couplings can be used properly only one time.
Concerning corrosion, the basic material of the wet-
ted parts (SS 316L/1.4435) is capable to tolerate
common corrosive media up to high temperatures.
The gaskets supplied with the Ingold process con-
nection and with the G1" Liquiphant M type weld-in
adapter, besides CIP and SIP-proof, resist to a wide
variety of aggressive substances. For particular
applications, please ask to the E+H service.
In case of disassembling of the sensors, new gas-
kets equal to the originals and specific torques must
be employed for the re-assembling procedure, to
assure the stated IP (Ingress Protection) grade of the
enclosures.
When the ambient has a high humidity rate and the
process is at low temperature, a plastic housing can
be an effective choice (i.e. model TA20B) to avoid Figure 4. Installation with the Tri-Clamp®
problems due to condensation. component 7IMPS.

System components
Housing The housing which contains the electric terminals or the transmitter, can be of different types and
materials (plastic, painted aluminium, stainless steel). Its fitting to the rest of the probe and the
gland for the cable entry, assure an IP grade of 65 at minimum (see also the figure below).
All the supplied heads have internal geometry according to DIN 43729 standard (form B), and
thermometer connection M24x1.5.
Head type TA20A is the basic E+H aluminium housing for temperature sensors, provided in the
E+H corporate colours, without supplementary charges in the version IP66/IP67.
Head TA20B is a polyamide housing, black or white, sometimes defined with the code BBK in the
Temperature market.
In TA21E a screw cap is employed, joined to the head body by a chain.
Head type TA20D (aluminium), called also BUZH, is able to contain a terminal block and a trans-
mitter at the same time, or two transmitters.
Head TA20J is the stainless steel housing with E+H corporate design, and can be provided also
with a LCD display (4 digits), operating with 4…20 mA transmitters.
TA20R is the head suggested by E+H Temperature division for hygienic applications, due to its
material (stainless steel) and its "clean" design.
TA20W (BUS type) is an aluminium round-shaped grey head, with a clip for the cap closure.

Head transmitter The available head-mounted transmitters are (see also the section "Electronics"):
• TMT 180 PCP 4…20 mA
• TMT 181 PCP 4…20 mA
• TMT 182 Smart HART®
• TMT 184 Profibus-PA®

TMT 180 and TMT 181 are PC Programmable transmitters. TMT 180 can be supplied in a version
with a better accuracy (0.1°C vs. 0.2°C) in the bandwidth -50…250°C; a model with a fixed meas-
urement range (defined by the user in the order phase) is available too.
TMT 182 output consists of 4…20 mA and HART® superposed signals.
For TMT 184, with Profibus-PA® output signal, the communication address can be set via software
or by means of a mechanical dip-switch: the user may ask for the desired configuration in the
order phase
.

Figure 6. TMT 181.

Extension neck The extension neck (part between the process connection and the housing), built from stainless
steel, is constituted by a tube with standard diameter of 15 mm and length 82 mm.
For the Ingold process connection, this dimension of 82 mm is not sufficient, and a greater length
must be specified by the user through the "8" digit in the product order code.

Tri-Clamp® DIN 11851

Varivent® Weld-in

G1" Liquiphant M type Ingold

The connections are supplied in several sizes. Others (i.e. Neumo, APV) are available on request.
The process connection is continuously welded on the probe or on the well in such a way to obtain
a welding radius of 3.2 mm at minimum, between the lower surface of the connection and the sen-
sor stem (requirement of EHEDG and 3-A® standards).
The Ingold connection is supplied with the sealing o-ring mounted on, whose material (silicone)
is in compliance with FDA CFR Title 21, § 177.2600 (max temperature 230°C).
Concerning the available welding adapters, please see the paragraph "Accessories".
The Varivent® connections must be used with dedicated Tuchenhagen® in-line components or
tank adapters; for Varivent® flanges with small nominal diameter, the maximum immersion lengths
for usual applications are listed in the following table (see also figure 3)

Please be aware of the fact that in the past the Varivent® connection DN25 has been used also for
pipes with nominal diameter DN32.

Probe In TR 45 the measuring probe is constituted by a mineral insulated insert positioned inside the
thermowell.
For its replacement, the insert length (IL) must be chosen depending on the immersion length (L)
of the thermowell; in case of need for a spare part, please refer to the following table:

8 Endress+Hauser
omnigrad M TR 44, TR 45

Sensor Probe Tip Insert Insert Diam. Ext. Neck Insert Length

TR 45 red./tapered TET 105 3 mm 82 IL = L+92
TR 45 straight TET 100 6 mm E IL = L+E+10
TR 45 red./tapered TET 105 3 mm E IL = L+E+10

In TR 44 the protection well and the sensing part cannot be separated.

The immersion length is available in some standard values, or it can be choosen "customized"
within a range (please see the product structures in the last pages of this document).
For special versions of TR 45, with immersion shorter than 30 mm, the diameter of the thermowell
should be 5.3 mm, as in the reduced tip.
On request the starting material for the wetted parts can be supplied in compliance with Basler
Norm 2 (BN2), which imposes a limited ferrite content, in order to obtain an improved corrosion
resistance. For some sensor’s configurations the compliance with the requirements of BN2 can
be assured also after the welding and machining operations, that is on the finished product.
The surface roughness (Ra) of the wetted parts is supplied down to 0.4 µm. A roughness below
0.4÷0.5 µm is not demonstrated to have advantages for hygienic purposes.
Electropolishing consists in an electrolytic treatment of the metal surface, which leads to a clean-
ing, levelling and passivation of it.
In TR 45 a thermically conductive compound can be requested inside the thermowell, to improve
the heat transfer between the well and the internal sensing insert. The compound shouldn’t be
requested for immersion lengths longer than 300 mm, and used over 200°C.

Certifications
Certifications from exter- • EHEDG Type 1 certification (TNO report n. V3912). EHEDG accepted process connections are:
nal bodies Varivent, IDF type ISO 2853, APV (acc. DIN 11864), APV Inline, DIN 11851 (only in combination
with EHEDG certified gasket from Siersema), Suedmo, Naue, Neumo.
• 3-A® Authorization no. 1144 for the declaration of compliance with standard 74-01.
• ATEX certificate KEMA 01 ATEX1169 X (1 GD IIC EEx ia T1÷T6) for TR 45.

Manufacturer’s certifica- The 3.1.B material certificate, according to standard EN 10204, is selectable directly from the sale
tions structure of the product. Other kinds of material certifications can be requested separately.
The "standard" one is a simplified and cost effective version of the certificate, in which the docu-
mentation about the origin of the employed materials refers to each sensor. The "labelled" version
has in addition a specific marking relating to the wetted parts of the sensor, and assures the
placement in the archives of the relevant data by means of the serial number of the thermometer.
Concerning tests and calibration, the "inspection test report" consists in a declaration of conform-
ity to the essential points of standard DIN EN 60751.
The "Factory calibration" is carried out in the E+H EA (European Accreditation) accredited labo-
ratory for temperature calibrations, following an internal procedure. A calibration performed
according to an EA accredited procedure (SIT calibration) can be requested separately.
The calibration is executed on the thermometer insert, when that is present in the sensor (TR 45).
For TR 44 a minimum immersion length (90 mm) is needed to assure a correct calibration.
With the Sensor Matching Calibration, a preliminary Factory calibration of the sensor is executed,
and subsequently the output curve of the transmitter is adjusted in order to minimize the meas-
urement error. In this way some of the errors of the sensor (probe or "loop" probe+transmitter) are
compensated by means of the transmitter.

Maintenance Omnigrad M thermometers don't need a specific maintenance. For the models supplied with
process connections including seals, the integrity of the sealing ring should be checked regularly
and it must be substituted when necessary.
In case of ATEX certified components (transmitter, insert), please refer to the specific documen-
tation (see the code at the end of this document).

Delivery time For small quantities (about 10 units) and standard options, from 5 to 20 days depending on the
requested configuration.
