Engineering research centres (ERCs) were first established in this country in the
middle of the 1980s with the direct intention of fostering improved Research and
Development collaboration between universities, industry and the government.
Unlike similar engineering research initiatives that preceded ERCs, they were
introduced with a broad remit; their focus was on changing the conduct of academic
engineering research and education as well as precompetitive generic research.
The key focus was on innovation in next-generation technology advances at the
intersection of disciplines. It was recognised that universities were often the only
places that had sufficient engineering knowledge to be able to deliver the level of
research that was required to support such objectives. The results of the research
were intended to be useful to industry but with a longer-term view than other
research. Another direct outcome of the ERCs was that university graduates would,
in theory be better prepared to commence work in an engineering environment.

As time went on the next generation of ERCs went one step further and encouraged
collaboration across universities and had a direct focus on the younger generation
of students with a leaning towards engineering - not just those who were already
studying at the universities in question. The third generation of ERCs were
implemented from 2008 and were created to cope with an increasingly global
economy and also a reduction in student interest in sciences and engineering.

Q17. It has long been recognised that industry leads the way in furthering innovative
engineering research.

(A) True

(B) False

(C) Cannot say

ANSWER: B

Q18. The global economy has had a significant positive impact on the success we
have seen in engineering research.

engineering.

A strong year for new car sales!

Figures released by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show
that new car registration in the UK have increased in the first quarter of 2013 to
605,198 compared to the first three months of 2012 with 563,556 new cars being
registered.
The registration of diesel cars has increased from 283,872 to 292,403; this indicates
a 3% year on year increase. Due to the increased demand for the new downsized
turbo petrol-engine cars, there has been a notable increase in 2013 of 32,570
(12.1%) cars to 304,356, compared to the amount of petrol cars being registered in
2012 being 271,481.
March 2013 saw Ford’s Fiesta top the sales chart with 27,748 examples of the
super-mini being registered in Britain, contributing to the 34,309 of the Fiesta
models sold so far.
Figures from SMMT March sales show that even though that the Nissan Qashquai
has been on sale in UK for six years it can still compete against the best with being
ranked 6th in the list with 8,485 registered and the BMW 1-series is placed 8th most
popular with 7001 cars being registered.
A highly productive year for drivers and sales teams alike!

2012.

Climate change is undoubtedly the biggest threat facing the planet and the potential
impact in human terms could be catastrophic. Many low lying coastal areas may
become completely submerged leading to human migration and suffering on a scale
never seen before. Drinking water is likely to become increasingly scarce and
conflict for control of water resources is anticipated. There is no longer any question
that climate change is created by human activities and it is through human
endeavour we must combat it. We must reduce our dependence on carbon emitting
fossil fuels and promote clean renewable energy, and we must be willing to support
and nurture energy efficient new technologies. Technology, like low energy lighting,
holds the key to reducing greenhouse gases without adversely impacting our quality
of life now or in the future.

Q23. Whether or not steps are taken to combat climate change, standard of living
will deteriorate.

(A) True

(B) False

(C) Cannot say

ANSWER: B

Q24. Unchecked climate change is likely to lead to humanitarian crises.

ANSWER: C

The gas provider Centrica has seen its half-year profits fall by 20% to £992 million.
Despite this it has decided to increase its dividend to shareholders to 3.9p per share.
The rise in energy prices released before the announcement of Centrica's profits
was designed, said the company, to restore "reasonable profitability". The chief
executive, Sam Laidlaw, said, "We produced a good set of results in tough market
conditions... we will continue to concentrate on improving customer service in British
Gas..." This is an interesting statement given the record rise in prices to households.
The announcement of profits which are not far off one billion pounds, a day after
the announcement of the rise in price and the increase in dividend to shareholders,
is likely to provoke angry reaction. Many will question the extent of the market power
that Centrica possesses. There will also be those that will question what the phrase
'reasonable profitability' means in the context of profits of nearly one billion pounds.

Q26. Companies increase shareholder dividends when profits fall.

(A) True

(B) False

(C) Cannot say

ANSWER: C

Q28. Announcing large profits, soon after announcing price rises, is likely to provoke
angry reaction.

The brain has around one hundred billion cells (neurons). Brain cells make links
that form neural pathways and it is these links that help us to learn. It is estimated
that there might be as many as one hundred trillion such neural links although others
have put the figure much higher - 1 with millions of zeros after it. The number of
neural links has been likened to trying to imagine all the trees in the Amazon
rainforest as the number of neurons and the number of leaves on every tree in the
rainforest as the number of neural connections. Much of the new research into how
the brain works has been boosted by the development of magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) technology. This technology allows us to be able to gain a greater
understanding of the complex processes that are involved in normal human activity.
Different parts of the brain can be shown to be more active in certain types of human
physical and mental activity than others and whilst we still have much to learn about
the brain, the leap in our understanding has not only helped the medical profession
but also business and economics.

Q29. There are one hundred trillion neural links in the human brain.

(B) False

ANSWER: C

Q30. Some parts of the brain are more active during creative activity.
