Assignment #1

1. What is the most important reason why you take up the subject course Ethics (if you
haven’t taught it, what would be your #1 goal)?

In life, we are governed by standards and rules that guides us towards a place where we
can experience an optimum level of fulfillment. By this, what I mean is: If in a situation
where you are completely oblivious of how a trash is supposed to be thrown, you
wonder and question yourself on what is really the rightful or most preferable thing to
do. Should you throw it anywhere as that in the park or the road? Or should you rather
throw it properly as how trashes are expected to be decently thrown? This is where
Ethics comes in. Ethics are the rules that help us tell the difference between right and
wrong and encourage us to do the right thing and to avoid the wrong thing. In our
society today, we are completely aware that throwing our trashes anywhere and
everywhere is wrong and is an implication of iniquity and disobedience. In contrast,
taking the time and effort to throw them properly on designated trash bins are
considered good and ethical. So, if you then choose to discard your trashes properly on
placed trash bins, then that would make you a responsible individual. However if you
choose to dispose them inappropriately, that would make you the person who went
against a rule that is meant to promote peace and order. And realizing that you are
THAT kind of person, wouldn’t usually make you feel as fulfilled as being a responsible
one. This is the most important reason why I, and We, take up the subject course Ethics.
Because it guides us. It makes us realize our full rationality, and it brings us to a place
where we are satisfied and joyful with our own actions. Most significantly, it works out
for the good of all people. My number 1 goal upon studying Ethics would be to further
learn and hone my thinking and analytical skills in the field of being a good person for
the betterment of everyone. I aspire that through studying Ethics, I could understand
more the dynamics of life, and how I should keep up with it.

2. Do you think the subject course Ethics will help you in accomplishing your goal? Why
yes, why not?

Yes. I very much trust and believe that the subject course Ethics can help me in
accomplishing my goals, because Ethics is concerned with morality and I am all for what
is good and what is morally upright. I am an in individual who seeks to contribute to
whatever things that can make humanity more meaningful, and things that can make
the world a better place to live in.

3. What is the most important change you will introduce in the way you learn Ethics?

I think the most important change that I will introduce, especially to myself, in the way I
learn Ethics is the essence of being open-minded. Human as we are, there are these
factors that keeps us from doing what is good and what is right. Pride. Ego. Selfishness.
These are the hindrances that keeps us from realizing our full potential as human beings
and closes the door towards deeper knowledge and wisdom in life. Upon learning Ethics
and as we progress in this course, I will train myself to always have an open mind to
accept things. To be humble when taught about certain things, even when it contradicts
my values and principles. To be able to impart my own honest opinions, and most
importantly, to be always open for change. Because change is always good as long as
you change for the better.

4. Present your brilliant argument regarding the importance of the subject course
(Ethics) in your profession base on the course introduction presented. Make it sure
that you can establish the connection of the subject course and the profession that
you want to perform as your role in the modern society.

To start with, the subject course Ethics deals with the principles of Ethical Behavior in
modern society at the level of the person, society, and in interaction with the
environment and other shared resources. If I can relate this to my dream profession
which is the program that I am studying right now, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I
can definitely correlate that as a nurse, our primary duty is to practice morality at all
times towards our patients, may it be in a patient-nurse setting, a nurse as an advocate
for the health of the people in the society, and a nurse who values a patient’s
interaction with his or her existing environment. As nurses, we can be as strong as we
can when it comes to our duties and responsibilities, but at the same time we can also
be the most gentle people out there who seeks for nothing but the wellness of their
clients. To be a nurse is to be willing to set aside your own beliefs and principles to
respect the beliefs and principles of your patients. To be a nurse is to be always open for
constructive criticisms that are just also for the wellness of your patients. Therefore, the
subject course Ethics is a very much fundamental tool for us students to use not only in
the time when we already become actual nurses, but even right now, when we are still
building ourselves up to heal some people in the future. Studying Ethics is just as
important as studying how to insert a catheter, perform intramuscular injections, and
even providing a patient their bed bath. Ethics teaches us obedience, and it teaches us
humility. It guides our decision-making techniques, especially when the decision that we
have to make is for the health of our client. Ethics is essential in studying nursing, and it
is essential to every other professions as well.
