I. Study these sentences,


A. Nominal sentence (S + be + complement)
We use this pattern when there is no verb in the sentence. For example,

1. I am / was a nurse
2. She is /was a midwife
3. They are/were doctors
4. Are you a student?
5. They are not teachers.

B. Verbal sentence (S + V + Object


We use this pattern when there is verb in the sentence. For example,

1. I go/went to campus everyday you


2. She likes/liked me
3. They eat/ate apples
4. I don’t understand.
5. She doesn’t like apple
6. Does she teach here?

Time

Example of telling time by giving a story;

They usually come here at 08.00 o’clock. They come together by car. They start the activities at
09.00 o’clock. At 12.00 o’clock, they take one hour rest and have their lunch.

Note : when we talk about routine activities, we use simple present tense.
Don’t forget to put adverb of frequency, such as usually, always ...etc

Exercise : tell your friend about your healthy daily activity. Use the time to make it clearer!

Describing something

When we want to describe something, we must remember the followings rules;

1. What is the ”thing”.


2. What is it made of.
3. What are the characteristics (colour,taste,where to buy, price etc.....)

Study this example;

- What is a Medicine?
A medicine is something we take when we are sick. It is usually made of either natural or
chemical ingredients. It has many function depends on the use. We can get/buy it in the
drugstore.

Describing someone

When we want to describe someone we can describe him/her both physically or personally.

Height

 
  He is tall. He is short. He is average / normal / medium height.
+ He is very tall. He is quite short. He is relatively normal height.
Build

She is skinny. (negative) She is fat. (negative)


She is anorexic. (medical) She is tubby. (negative)
She is underweight. (negative) She is overweight. (negative)

!Note - if a man is fat (especially round the waist) we often say he has a beer belly.
