Introduction

Task importance refers to the process of ascertaining the value and significance of any

task. It involves a careful selection and planning of all the tasks before beginning to accomplish

them. In determining the importance of any task, one should have a critical assessment on what

would happen if the task is not fulfilled or if the task is delayed (Bradbury & Lichtenstein, 2000).

In order to effectively sort out tasks according to their importance, their long-term benefits are

considered. If the task influences an individual as well as his team players’ future results, then

the task is deemed important. These kinds of task should be tackled first before any other task

since failure to do so would have adverse effects on the performance of any company. On the

other hand, finishing these tasks and any other task of similar nature on time would result to the

individual and the company achieving their goals, dreams and success.

The urgency of any task should also be considered when sorting out tasks according to

their importance. Urgently needed work should be tackled first since they are considered

important (Steven & Thomas, 2006). They are given first priority and individuals should strive to

complete them within the stipulated time to avoid delays. Less urgent work should be set aside to

give room for the important ones to be dealt with first. This sorting out of tasks involves setting

priorities of each task and then embarking on serious work to accomplish the urgently needed

tasks before the less urgent ones. In doing so, the team players will be able to beat deadlines for

any given task and work within the stipulated time.

Criticality or complexity of a task is a vital aspect that needs to be considered when

gathering indications on task importance. Tasks that prove difficult to tackle and accomplish

should be given extra attention and sufficient time. Such tasks should not be brushed aside with

the intention of doing them at a later date (Steven & Thomas, 2006). Pushing complex tasks for a

later date is procrastination of the highest degree and one may realize when it is late that the task

has not been done when the deadline is due or is just hours away. In considering these complex

tasks as important, the team players will join hands and work tirelessly in solving whatever is

proving difficult hence coming up with solutions. On the contrary, less complex work should not

be neglected. They should be tackled faster in order to create room for more task allocation.

The frequency with which a task is performed plays a major role in gathering indications

of task importance (Bradbury & Lichtenstein, 2000). Tasks that are performed daily are

considered to be important than those that are performed weekly or monthly. The daily

performed tasks are deemed important since they are instrumental in the running of any

organization and failure to perform them might stifle the operations and smooth running of the

company. These tasks should be given first priority and thus completed before any other task.

The damage caused by mistakes from a given task is instrumental in determining its

importance (Steven & Thomas, 2006). Tasks whose pitfalls results into major losses for the

organization are often considered highly important and thus are often handled with extreme

caution. Such tasks are given extra attention and enough time is allocated for them. Every team

player is expected to give his whole towards the accomplishment of the task and no amount

distraction is condoned (Bradbury & Lichtenstein, 2000). The task should be reviewed

thoroughly to correct any mistake that could have been made before its submission. All these

efforts are aimed at minimizing the losses that could arise from the task being poorly done and at

the same time maximizing the success and profits of the organization.

Conclusion

Task importance is of high significance to any organization that aspires to achieve its

visions and goals. It helps organizations plan their tasks and gives them guidelines on how to

tackle and accomplish them for their benefit.
