INTRODUCTION

I. Background of the study

The need for electricity is growing by the day, and frequent power outages are producing
plenty of issues in a variety of settings, including homes, businesses, and farms. According
to ACADEO’s article “Mindanao Rotating Power Outages” The severe drought caused by
the El Niño phenomenon made the Mindanao grid remains being on a critical status. (Jeff
Badal, 2020).

The sheer restricted quantity of power generated at power plants and the scarcity of non-
renewable energy sources, uninterruptible power supply is CDO’s greatest challenge. In this
paper, a smart emergency light is designed, developed and tested for use in various
applications such as home, industries, agricultural sector and shops, etc.

II. Statement of the Study

The need for electricity is growing by the day, and frequent power outages are producing

III. Objective of the Study

The main purpose of this proposal is to design and develop an energy saving, high
luminous efficacy and high useful life emergency lighting system, using fluorescent lamps
by LEDs to combat power outages.

Specific Objectives

Specifically, this proposal aims to:

a. To design and construct an energy efficient automatic emergency light using LEDs
and equip it with a battery overcharge protection circuit.
b. To make sure that in the event of a normal power supply failing, illumination is
provided promptly, automatically and for sufficient time.

IV. Theoritical Framework

In today's world, artificial lighting accounts for a significant amount of the energy utilized in
the electrical network. The value of efficient lighting methods can be studied as energy
consumption by various segments rises in response to the difficulty of generation. In low-
light applications, light emitting diodes (LEDs) are commonly employed. For more than a
decade, LEDs have been widely used for signaling in a variety of applications. Lighting is
required for the majority of activities. As a result, emergency lighting solutions have become
crucial. They are considered a safety device and are necessary in a variety of settings. They
are used to provide lighting in places where there is no power, such as households, stairs,
garages, elevators, restaurants, and other public spaces. Emergency lights are particularly
vital in households since they may be the only source of light in the event of a power outage.
These devices offer a high luminous efficacy, a long service life, and are compact.
Furthermore, they operate at low voltage and current levels and do not require an igniting
process. These characteristics make these devices appealing for emergency lighting. Secades
M. R., et. all., presents an alternative solution based on high-efficiency LEDs.

Fluorescent bulbs powered by batteries are commonly used in traditional emergency

lighting systems. Because fluorescent lamps work on alternate voltage and current and have
a higher voltage level than batteries, a converter is required to raise this voltage and even
convert the continuous current to alternate. A circuit is also required to charge the battery
via the mains, as well as a circuit to track the input signal. These features require batteries
with considerable capacity of energy which have high weight and size. Thus, the use of
LEDs becomes an attractive due to its high luminous efficacy of (100 lm/W) , which allow
the use of small battery and/or greater autonomy of the system (Cree, 2009).

V. Signifiance of the Study

This success of this study will redound to the benefit of such communities specially our
households, considering that lighting plays an important role in our lives. This is a big help
to future researchers because it serves as their guide in making their first research.
