1. They discovered Asteroid 6282 called Edwelda (derived after their first names), an asteroid
orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter.

3. He invented the telephone which was the predecessor of the mobile phone and which was
first produced by the Bell Company for the benefit of the police.

4. He invented dynamite in 1867. Dynamite today is widely used for various kinds of explosions.
It is particularly useful in the mining industry. Dynamite explosions are used to access mineral
deposits deep below the surface of the earth.in the United States by Oliver Evans.

5. He invented the ball-point pen in 1938.

II.
1. Define invention.

Answer: Invention means to create something that doesn’t exist so far. An inventor is
someone who discovers or produces a useful object or process that did not exist
before.

2. Discuss how modern inventions have developed.

Answer: Modern inventions are rarely the products of a single inventor’s efforts.
For example, no single individual can claim that he or she alone invented the personal
computer. Thousands of people have played a useful role in its development and
manufacture and many thousands more have improved its design.

3. Enumerate at least 10 inventors and their inventions that have changed our lives.

Answer:
1. Laszlo Biro - He invented the ball-point pen in 1938.
2. Galileo Galilei – invented a clinical thermometer is an instrument used to
record the body temperature of a human being.
3. George de Maestral – invented Hook and Loop Fastener that the burdock
seeds had a sticking power that could be used as a fastening system for
clothes. This system could replace even buttons and make fastening easier
and less cumbersome.
4. Gerald Tissain - He was a Frenchman who invented ice cream which has
been enjoyed since 162. At first, there were limited flavors. Today, we get
to enjoy a wide variety of flavored ice cream made by numerous
companies throughout the world.
5. La Charra Janssen - A Dutch spectacle maker, invented in 1590 the
microscope, an instrument that magnifies extremely small objects so they
may be easily seen. By 1600, another Dutch, Antoine Van Leeuwen hook,
made a more powerful microscope and observed microscopic life through
it.
6. Nicolas Joseph Cugnot – invented the Motor Car a road vehicle with an
enclosed compartment for the passengers, the motor car is powered by an
internal combustion engine. It is also called an automobile.
7. Jacob Parkin - An American, he invented the first refrigerator in 1834.
Based on the principle of mechanical compression refrigeration, his
invention has three systems – compression, absorption, and steam jet.
8. Archimedes - a Greek Mathematician, he invented the screw for a
purpose other than what it is known and used for today – for drawing
purposes, not for wood work.
9. Rene Lasnnec - this French physician who invented the stethoscope is
used to hear the sounds produced by various organs of the body such as
the heart and the lungs. Previous to this invention, doctors pressed their
ears next to the patient’s body to hear the sounds of the organ being
examined.
10. Alexander Graham Bell - He invented the telephone which was the
predecessor of the mobile phone and which was first produced by the Bell
Company for the benefit of the police.
