1. What kind of event is being portrayed in the paintings? What emotion/s are the artists trying to
evoke? For what reason? (10 points)
As I stare at the painting, I notice a conflict between civilians (on the left) and military authorities (on
the right) (right side). The painting, in my opinion, depicts an abuse of power. The painting depicts a
variety of emotions. The artist of 'the third of May 1808' conjures up a picture of someone who is
abusive, submissive, and dedicated to the power they have been given. There are peaks and valleys of
emotions hidden behind this art.
2. As mere, frail human beings, why do you think we have such artworks to process the emotion? (10
points)
The ability of artworks to elicit emotions in viewers is widely assumed to be a perfectly natural and
unproblematic fact. It seems self-evident that we can feel sadness or pity for fictional characters, fear
when confronted with threatening monsters on screen, and joy when listening to upbeat, happy music.
This could explain why so many of us are art consumers in the first place. Many of us think that good
art should not leave us cold.
3. How did the artist elicit the emotions of the narratives through the subject matter? (10 points)
Sensory contradiction can generate the feeling, which is centered on the sense of something new and
unexpected. When expectations regarding a piece of art aren't satisfied, but the work adjusts those
expectations in a way that's understandable, it might be surprising.
