    Soil Loading & Lateral Earth Pressures

    1. You are supporting an excavation with a shoring system to support a cut of 15’ deep. What is the
    maximum pressure on the shoring at the subgrade/dredge line, if the soil properties are: unit weight ϒ
    = 110 pcf, cohesion c = 200 psf, and friction angle φ = 24°. Assume the surcharge loads are standard.

    2. What is the angle of the failure plane from the face of the trench in Problem 1? What is the soil
    pressure at the original ground?

    3. A 1,500 psf uniformly distributed load acting adjacent to the excavation. What is the resulting lateral
    pressure from this (surcharge) load?
