NEW NORMAL OF EDUCATION

Rolyn M. Yandug

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to a gravely uncertain

situation (although some may argue that even before the pandemic, we are still in
an uncertain period), and the virus will not go away anytime soon. The challenge
that we now face is to search for long-term , sustainable options that can help us
move forward. As part of the short- and long-term strategies of the Philippines,
Secretary Briones introduced the BE-LCP as the department 's guidance on how to

m
deliver education in time for the COVID-19 pandemic while ensuring the health,

er as
safety , and welfare of all DepEd learners , teachers, and personnel. “The first

co
eH w
principle that we adhered to and which we are committed to, in compliance with the

o.
President’s directive is to protect the safety, health and well-being of our learners,
rs e
teachers and personnel and to prevent further transmission of COVID-19. But at the
ou urc
same time, we want to ensure learning continuity. Our battle cry is learning must
continue,” Briones said in a forum. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed the way
o

students are taught around the world in just a matter of weeks. These
aC s

improvements give us a glimpse into how education will change over the long term
vi y re

for the better-and the worse. Globally, the sluggish pace of progress in academic
institutions is lamentable, with centuries-old, lecture-based teaching approaches,
ed d

cultural prejudices embedded, and outmoded classrooms. However, COVID-19 has

ar stu

been a catalyst for educational institutions around the world in a relatively short
time quest for creative solutions. We've seen learning consortia and coalitions
is

taking shape in the last few weeks, with numerous stakeholders-including

governments, publishers, educational practitioners, technology providers, and
Th

telecom network operators-coming together to use digital channels as a temporary

solution to the crisis.

Now more than ever, it’s important for principals and superintendents to
demonstrate leadership capabilities. They need to be flexible and adaptive to this
new learning environment. And to be able to address unplanned circumstances, as
well as be planning for change, the Butuan City Division headed by Dr. Marilou B.

Dedumo, our Schools Division Superintendent, bravely accepts the challenge of this
new normal in our educational system. She continue to offer frequent
communication thru online meetings, virtual Division MANCOM, and strongly
supports the activities of each PSDS, EPS and all other division administrators to
better prepare the schools for the upcoming opening of classes.

Butuan City School of Arts and Trades, the school where I belong, is one with
the Department of Education (DepEd) in using an adaptive learning methods to
ensure continuity of education, and protection of learners from the COVID-19
pandemic. Our School Principal, Dr. Dennis R. Roa, has worked closely with the
DepEd to enforce its Learning Continuity Plan and COVID-19 Response Plans, along
with teachers and educational partners, to ensure continued learning and the

m
utmost protection for students.

The learning modalities our school will be adopting is the Modular Distance

Learning and the Online Distance Learning based on the results of the LESF or the

Learner Enrollment and Survey Forms. In line to this, our school principal assigns

department heads and teachers in every department for the printing and
reproduction of modules in all subject areas and instructed each subject teachers to
o

make an Activity Sheets/Work Sheets to be used by the students in case there is no

classes, BCSAT launched the KSP strategy( K stands for Kuha , S is for Sagot and P is
for Pasa) as a simple guide for the students and all other stakeholders on how
ed d

learning will take place during this pandemic. The schedule of the distribution of
ar stu

the printed modules will be posted in BCSAT FB page, on posters outside the school
gate, and through online communication of the parents/guardian (21 – 59 y. o.) with
the respective class adviser or subject teacher. The distribution of the printed

modules will be done every Monday morning at the BCSAT covered court following

the specific time schedule per grade level to strictly follow the social distancing and
other health and safety protocols. While the digital modules for the students who
sh

preferred online learning will be forwarded through their class group chat or in their
emails. The students will independently study and answer each module according to
their class schedule that was indicated on their class program. However, they can
contact their class adviser or subject teacher for any questions and clarifications
regarding on their class activities. For the submission of the answered modules, the

parents / guardian who are 21 – 59 years old will be the one to submit it to the
school every Friday afternoon still following the specific time schedule per grade
level to strictly follow the social distancing and other health and safety protocols.

students and the teachers.

School is a safe haven and a secure environment for many children. The
COVID-19 pandemic however is moving the learning of children from school to
home. BCSAT administrators stressed the importance of providing assistance to
parents , caregivers and elder siblings in the successful implementation of
integrated learning strategies to ensure that children's right to learn is protected

m
even in a household environment. In line to this endeavors, the school has

er as
co
conducted a virtual consultation with the parents to further inform them on how the

eH w
different learning modalities will be delivered and what would be their role in

o.
achieving the objectives in each learning areas. Enhancing teacher intrinsic
rs e
ou urc
motivation and minimizing burnout is also important. And as a way to support
teachers resilience to ensure teacher effectiveness, our school conducted series of
webinars for our teachers tackling different important topics to help them coped
o

with the present situations and the changes it may bring to their roles and
aC s
vi y re

responsibilities as an educator. The school administrators also recognized the need

to support teachers technologically to ensure teacher effectiveness specially during
this pandemic where technology plays a vital role in the success of teaching and
ed d

learning process. The school provides laptop for the teachers who have no personal
ar stu

computers and even internet connection for them to have an access during the
start of classes, they also conducted an online training for teachers to help them
is

maximize the use of technology and they have been trained to record and upload

documents and hold virtual classes effectively.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has shown the value of building resilience in
the face of multiple challenges, from pandemic disease to severe violence to
climate instability and also, indeed, rapid technological change. The pandemic is
also an opportunity to remember the skills that students need in this uncertain

environment, such as educated decision-making, innovative problem-solving, and
probably, adaptability. In order to ensure that those skills remain a priority for all
students, resilience must also be integrated into our education systems. What is
really important at this time of crisis, indeed urgent, is to save a whole generation
of students from the most significant educational opportunity they've seen in their
lives and in their parents' and grandparents' lives. This is really a time to stand up
for and with the children.
