In this tutorial, ill detaily explain, how to connect a ATX Computer Desktop power supply, into a PlayStation3, if you own a
Slim or Super Slim PS3, if you are having power issues, and you need to determine if the PSU in your PS3 has gone bad.
The procedure, may be complicated, but its pretty straight forward, and easy to execute, just follow the instructions, and
double check if your connections are within they´re place.

*CECH-30XX (3rd Batch Slims)
*CECH-40XX (1st Batch Super-Slims)
*CECH-42XX/43xx (2nd Batch Super-Slims)
WARNING: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE TO ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR PS3, ANY EXPLOSION,THERMO-NUCLEAR
REACTION OR WELL-COOKED BOARD, DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*ATX Power Supply - (Enough to power the PS3, i used a 300W, but anything above should do no harm)
*Cables - (You will need them to connect to the 12V and the 5V, preferably, isolated cables advised, power cables will do)
*Electrical Tape - (This one its optional, but i recommend using it, into a few cables that are exposed, just to prevent any
contacts, thus a short-circuit)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This its pretty straight forward, turn off the PS3, remove the HDD, and remove the screws underneath the PS3 Chassis.
There are 7 Philips Head type screws, 3 underneath the rubber feet, 3 on the plastic feet and 1 on the HDD Bay.
After that, remove the 4 Torx Security Bit screws, under the chassis, near the HDD Bay, once done, and all removed, the top
cover, should come very easy, if it doesnt, double check, if you have any unscrewed screw left.
Once the top cover has come loose, you can start removing the Blu-Ray Drive Deck, the WIFI and Bluetooth Anntenas (On
the chassis and on the motherboard), and nally remove the Power-Supply.

- STEP 3 - IDENTIFY THE ATX POWER-SUPPLY
Grab your ATX Power-Supply, and look at the rating lable, see how much Wattage it can handle.
PS3 Slims Power-Supplies are rated on an average of 250 Watts, no matter what model (APS or EADP), as you are going to
use an ATX PSU, usually theyre rating are above 250W, so its good to go.
For example, the PSU i´ve used has a rating of 300W total, but we all know the PS3 Slim doesn´t even reach this peak power
consumtion, so no worries there.
Very important, look at the 12V Connection, see how much Amps it can handle, a PS3 Slim PSU draws 16A from its 12V
Connection, my PSU was rated at 15A, anything below 15A or above 16A its not advised, unless its over-kill, like 30 Amps.
The PSU i had on my PS3 Slim (Model CECH-2504B) was an EADP-200DB, which has a rating of 250W, rated at 12V - 16A
and 5.5V - 0.9A.
Grab you 24-Pin Connector, and search for a green wire, once located, there are 4 black wires with it, 1 on the left of the
green wire, and 3 on the right, once that its done pick a thin wire or a paper clip, and connect the green wire with the black
wire (I suggest to connect with the rst column of 3 black wires) this will create a Jumper (Jump-Start) on the PSU, when
you connect it thru the power outlet, it will automatically send power to the PS3 Main-Board, thus entering the Stand-By
Mode.
Once you nished bypassing the 24-Pin Connector, choose 2 MOLEX Cables, to start working on the PS3 Power-Delivery.
Grab your rst MOLEX Connector, which will connect to the 12V on the PS3 Main-Board, and connect a spare wire to the
YELLOW Cable in the MOLEX, which its the 12 Volt Income.
On the same MOLEX Connector, grab another spare cable, and connect it to the BLACK MOLEX Cable, thats the GROUND
INCOME (I Suggest connecting not on the 1st BLACK wire, next to the YELLOW one, but on the 2nd one).
After you nished the rst MOLEX Connector for the 12V, its time to move to the 5V Power-Delivery.
Create PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API PDFCROWD
Again, grab another MOLEX Connector, and 4 thin spare wires, you need to connect them cross connection on the MOLEX,
simplifying it, grab 2 thin wires, and on the tips, twist them together, same with the other 2.
Done that, grab your 2 thin twisted wires, and connect them with the twisted tips, on the RED MOLEX wire, which its the
5V Income, once done that, grab another thin wires with twisted tips, and connect them to the BLACK MOLEX wire, which
its the GROUND INCOME.
After you´ve done working on the 2 MOLEX Connectors, and the 24-Pin Jumper Bypass, its time to connect the MOLEX
Connectors, into your PS3 Motherboard.
Grab your MOLEX Connector which contains the 12V Power-Source, and the YELLOW wire you connected before, and on
the connector on the PS3 Main-Board (The two long sticks) where goes the Original PSU when inserted, connect the
YELLOW 12V wire, into the rst connector.
Once done that, grab the BLACK wire, on the same MOLEX Connector, and connect it into the second 12V connector on
the PS3 Main-board (The one closest to the exhaust vents)
After you´ve connected the 12V Source, its time to move to the 5V source, again, grab your MOLEX Connector, that has the
RED 5V and the BLACK GRND Cable, which you´ve twisted the tips and connected into they´re respective wiring colours.
Grab the 4-Pin Connector on your PlayStation3 Main-Board, and straighten the 4-Pin Connector (this its very important, as
it helps connecting the 5V and the GRND into they´re respective connection holes), once done that connect the 2 thin RED
wires on the MOLEX into the 2 holes on the EDGE of the 4-Pin Connector.
Once done that, grab your 2 remaining thin BLACK GRND wires on the MOLEX,and connect them in the 2 middle holes into
the 4-Pin Connector.
Once done, plug the ATX PSU into the power-outlet, and the PSU Fan should kick-in, and the PS3 should be in Stand-By

Mode, and check in your PS3 Powers On.

««CONGRATULATIONS YOUR PS3 ITS WORKING!!!»»
A - Unfortunately that means its a Motherboard problem, it could be the Capacitors,Mosfets or even the NEC/TOKIN
Power Capacitors that needs a replacement, since they are related to the Power Delivery.
#3 Q - Its there any way i can check if its the Caps or the NEC/TOKIN!?
A - About the NEC/TOKIN, you could try to blow some hot-air with a hair-dryer on the main-board, just to simulate a
machine under use, it worked on my old TOSHIBA Laptop board, with a similar NEC/TOKIN Power Delivery, but personally
i never tried on a PlayStation3, the Caps, needs to be checked for the proper voltage.
#4 Q - Its using the ATX PSU on a PS3, safe for long periods of time!?
A - I would not advise to stay forever with this mod, as i used mainly to troubleshot my CECH-2504, if your PS3 turns on
properly with this mod, and its stable, then a rapid PSU replacement its advised.
A - Unfortunately no, as my CECH-2504 didn´t manifest a PSU issue, as i initialy though, so i am calling it a day, it served me
well though, so i no big loss there

A - Well, this Tutorial was made for the Slim and Super Slim, since the wiring layout its identical, the PlayStation3 "Phat"
1st-Gen, has a 5-Pin or even 3-Pin 5 Volt Connector, so i don´t know how to connect the 5V there, but i do know there its a
batch on 80Gb PS3 (NON-BC) which has a 4-Pin Connector layout, similar to the PS3 Slims.

In the drawing i say a single wire of a ATX PSU is rated around 6A because i found it while reading this:
http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Makers-Guide-to-ATX-Power-Supplies/
I was not aware about how much it was... but i gues we can take this "6A per wire" as close to the standards
...each pin in an ATX connector is rated to a max of 6 amps. It might be a prudent assumption that other portions of the circuit are similarly
rated. So, for instance, if you plan to use all 20+ amps that the +5V rail can throw, you should probably connect as many of the red wires as
practical to whatever you're powering. That might mean sticking a bundle of wires on your binding post
The reasons why the wire doesnt melts in the videos and other tutorials i found in internet where they uses a single wire is
because:
Create PDF in your applications with the Pdfcrowd HTML to PDF API PDFCROWD
-We are reading the power in the PSU, but usually the PSUs are overpowered and the PS3 power requirements are lower... in
this example with the 16A probably the motherboard is around 12A or so (this is speculative, hard to know how much)
-That 16A are the max in the worst scenario posible (with all components of the PS3 working at full and inside a game, with
hdd and bluray spinning etc...) but when you turn ON the PS3 the power requirements are way lower
-The plastics are not going to melt instantly... this is something that requires half an hour or more to cummulate the heat
-All this depends of the quality of the wires of your ATX PSU. And the wires have a security margin too, lets say if the wire is
rated at 8A (a good one), and the real PS3 motherboard requirements are 12A (a bit smaller that what the original PSU says)...
then is posible that the wire resists the heat and doesnt melts

8,375 The same rules applyes to all PS3 models i think... the differences are the pinout of the small connector... and of course the
watts of the original PSU (the rst PS3 models CECHA, etc... had a big PSU)
797
9,175 But dont replace your image by mine, yours was better
What you can do is to include some of the details i added (but no need to include all the texts i wrote in it)
8,375 The connector pinout i used in the image was taken from here btw http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/File:SlimPSU-pinout.jpg
And if someone is interested to see how is located there is a list of motherboard revisions photos here. In the slims is the same
797 connector, but the position changes, and sometimes is rotated www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Motherboard_Revisions
And this could be useful too http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Talk:Power_Supply#How_it_works

So done a bit of searching, and i might found a solution why the PS3 its shuting down, because of 2 little bastards (capacitors)

2 Great work guys. 2 questions though. 1. On the picture with the 4 pin connector you only show the 2 red wires going to pin 1
and 4 and nothing about the 2 black/ground wires that you said go into the 2 middle slots as pointed out in the actual
0 guide....so do I still need to put 2 grounds in the 2 middle slots....or no?
2. About the 12v rail and the wires roughly only handling 6a apiece....do I need to take 3 yellow wires from the atx molexs to

achieve roughly 18a?? I noticed no talk about this other than the info in the pic?

Thanks again guys. This is for a test run on my cech-4001B, as i believe my psu blew.
It was a rought calculation, every PS3 model has different requirements, and after this talk i realized usually the ATX wires are
rated a bit lower (less than 4a), so is hard to know how many are needed
What i have clear is if you want to "do it well" are needed more than 1, lol, thats for sure, but this is mostly intended for safety
and incase you want to make an intensive use of it, also is needed to consider the PS3 requirements varies, when you turn on
the PS3 (on main XMB) the power requirements are not much high, the peaks happens inside the games
But if you look in internet for this mod you are going to see lot of people doing it with only 1 wire... so.... ok it works... you can
do it but be aware of all this
The spot that are going to overheat more are the connectors --->male-female<--- because adds some resistance... so in the
schematic the "hotspots" are going to be the molex connectors
You can touch the molex connector and the wires with your ngers while working to know if are overheating (is just 12v, not
harming)
