7. In the binomial expansion of (𝑘 + 2𝑥)4 , where 𝑘 is a positive constant, the coefficient of 𝑥 2 is 150.

Calculate:

(a) the value of 𝑘

8. 𝑓(𝑥) = (1 + 𝑛) , where 𝑛 is a positive constant. In the expansion of 𝑓(𝑥) as a binomial of 𝑥 2 is 3.

(a) Calculate the value of 𝑛.

Using the value of 𝑛,

(b) Calculate as an exact fraction, the coefficient of 𝑥 3 in the series. [Jan 98/P1/Q2]

9. Given that the coefficient of the 𝑥 2 in the expansion of (1 − 𝑎𝑥)6 is 60 and 𝑎 > 0, find

(a) The value of 𝑎.

10. (a) Expand fully (𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥)4 , simplifying each term as far as possible.

In the expansion of (𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥)4 , 𝑎 ≠ 0, 𝑏 ≠ 0. The coefficient of 𝑥 is equal to the coefficient of 𝑥 2 .

Also, when 𝑥 = 2, the value of (𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥)4 is 2401.

(b) Find the possible pairs of values of 𝑎 and 𝑏. [Jan 11/P2/Q6]

11. (a) Expand (𝑝 + 𝑞𝑥)5 , simplifying each term as far as possible.

In the expansion of (𝑝 + 𝑞𝑥)5 , 𝑝 ≠ 0, 𝑞 ≠ 0. The coefficient of 𝑥 4 is twice the coefficient of 𝑥 2 .

Also when 𝑥 = 2, the value of (𝑝 + 𝑞𝑥)5 is 7776.

(b) find the possible pairs of 𝑝 and 𝑞. [May 03/P1/Q5]

12. f(𝑥) = (𝑝 + 𝑞𝑥)6 where 𝑝 ≠ 0 and 𝑞 ≠ 0.

(a) Find the expansion of f(𝑥) in ascending powers of 𝑥 up to and including the term in 𝑥 4 , simplifying each

term as far as possible.

In the expansion of f(𝑥), 4 times the coefficient of 𝑥 4 is equal to 9 times the coefficient of 𝑥 2 .

Given that (𝑝 + 𝑞) > 0 and f(1) = 15 625.

(b) find the possible pairs of values of 𝑝 and 𝑞. [May 17/P2/Q6]
