Problem 1: A shot is fired at an angle of 45° with a horizontal and a velocity of 300 fps.

Calculate the
range of the projectile.

Given:
θ = 45ᵒ
V0 = 300 ft/s
g = 32.2 ft/s2

Formula:
V0 = √(xg/sin2θ)

Solve for x
V0 = √ (xg/sin2θ)
V02 = xg/sin2 θ
V02 sin2 θ = xg
x = (V02 sin2 θ)/g

Solution:
x = (V02 sin2 θ)/g
x = [(300 ft/s)2][sin(2×45ᵒ)]/(32 ft/s2)
x = (90000 ft2/s2)/(32 ft/s2)
x = 2795.03 ft

Problem 2: A stone is thrown from a hill at an angle of 60° with the horizontal with an initial velocity of
100 fps. After hitting the level ground at the base of the hill, the stone has covered a horizontal distance
of 500 ft. How high is the hill?
V0 = 100 ft. /s

θ = 60ᵒ

y =?

x = 500 ft.
Given:
θ = 60ᵒ
V0 = 100 ft/s
g = 32.2 ft/s2
x = 500 ft
y=?

Formulae:
(1) V0x = V0cos θ
(2) V0y = V0sin θ
(3) x = V0xt
(4) y = V0yt + 0.5gt2

Solution:
(1) V0x = V0cos θ
V0x = (100 ft. /s) (cos 60ᵒ)
V0x = 50 ft. /s

(2) V0y = V0sin θ

V0y = (100 ft. /s) (sin 60ᵒ)
V0y = 50√3 ft. /s

(3) x = V0xt
x = (50 ft. /s)t
500 ft. = (50 ft. /s)t
t = 10s

(4) y = V0yt + 0.5gt2

y = (50√3 ft. /s)(10s) + (0.5)(32.2 ft. /s2)(10s)2
y = 1,027.03 ft.
